Fit for the future Helping kids embrace a lifetime of healthy choices
At UMR, we’re committed to supporting you and your
family on your journey to wellness. And, we’re
especially concerned about children.
Childhood obesity in the United States has reached
record levels, and it’s important that we all take steps to
help ensure that children have the nutrition they need to
grow, learn and thrive.
We’ve created this special edition of Healthy You to
share what we’re learning about childhood obesity and
what we can all do to help nurture a generation of
healthy kids. Please join us in making a difference in the
lives of all our children.

Just the facts Did you know?
1 in 3 Children are overweight
or obese
Facts about childhood obesity One-third of all children and adolescents in
the United states are overweight.
Children that are overweight or obese are 70
percent more likely to become overweight adults.
And, the long-term effects of childhood obesity are
particularly concerning. Kids that grow into
overweight adults are more likely to develop
cancer, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and
osteoarthritis.

Since 1980, childhood obesity rates
have risen 30%. Consumption of larger
portion sizes, high-calorie snack and
convenience foods and reduced
physical activity have all contributed to
the increase in obesity rates for
children and adolescents.
To change this trend, we want to
empower parents, community leaders
and educators with tools to help them
teach children about making healthy
choices and to engage children in
increasing their physical activity levels.

Nutrition and learning How poor nutrition affects kids
Did you know? Proper nutrition directly affects a child’s
ability to learn. A healthy diet is
associated with improved cognitive
function and academic performance.
Among fourth-grade students, those
having the lowest amount of protein in
their diet had the lowest achievement
scores. Children who suffer from poor
nutrition during the brain's most
formative years score much lower on
tests of vocabulary, reading
comprehension, arithmetic, and
general knowledge.

Cognitive function
Nutrition plays a critical role in
brain function. Even short-term
disruptions in essential
nutrients can have a direct
effect on cognitive ability.
Iron deficiency is specifically
associated with poor attention
span, and children who are
anemic tend to score poorly on
vocabulary, reading and other
tests.
Studies have found that children
who do not eat breakfast or
consume sugary breakfasts had
reduced ability to concentrate.
Children suffering from
inadequate protein intake or
who consume too many
simple carbohydrates may
lack energy.
Children who are hungry,
dehydrated or suffering from
poor nutrition may seem
irritable and restless.

Healthy habits Start early
During early childhood, children learn most of their eating habits by example, from
their family. That’s why it’s important for family members to ensure that healthy,
nutritious foods are available at every meal.
By ensuring that your children have access to healthy and nutritious foods, you can
help to make sure that your child has the essential nutrients to ensure that they are
growing, developing and thriving. A variety of resources are available to help you
learn more about helping children to develop healthy eating habits.

They gotta’ move!
To ensure that a child’s body is growing
and developing properly, physical activity
is key. Children need a minimum of 60
minutes of aerobic activity every day.
Children also need time for muscle and
bone strengthening activities at least
every other day.

JOIN for MESM is a first-of-its-kind, whole-
family program to fight childhood obesity that
engages kids who struggle with extra weight,
along with their parents, in a series of group
sessions to achieve healthier weights through
healthier family food choices, increased
activity, and lifestyle improvement tracking.
Each session is built on the framework of
group support, learning practical strategies and
implementing change in a family’s everyday
life. JOIN for ME was developed by the
UnitedHealth Center for Health Reform and
Modernization.
In the original proof-of-concept study, JOIN for
ME partnered with the YMCA of the USA and
the YMCA of Greater Providence, R.I. The
study demonstrated that the combination of
whole-family engagement helped participants
achieve significant reductions in extra weight.
After six months, 84 percent of the 155
participants completed the full program and
achieved, on average, a 3.5-percent reduction
in extra weight. Equally promising is that
parents of participants also lost weight in the
study, opening the door for new wellness
models that engage the entire family.
