Agenda>> Obesity and Diabetes is the Global Problem
• Continuing trend of morbid obesity and diabetes globally• This has already led to significant health care costs associated with
these diseases• What is the likely cause of this global health and cost issue?• What are countries doing to counteract this?
>> Stevia is the Global Answer• Stevia offers a natural, cost saving alternative to sugar that now
tastes good.>> Manufacturing and Application Challenges
• Sugar reduction and elimination technologies and their application to stevia

What is being Done?
Since the WHO data was collected, Mexico has doubled its tax on sugar sweetened beverages. It is expected to further increase the effects seen above.

Mega-trend of Sugar Reduction
The global sugar substitutes market was estimated at $11.5 Billion in 2014 and is expected to reach $14.3 Billion by 2019, growing at a CAGR of 4.5% for the same period.
The global sugar substituted market in 2014 was dominated by the high intensity sweeteners segment (50.2%), while the flourishing F&B sector drives its stevia segment to grow at a CAGR of 17.6% till 2019.

So what is Stevia?

What is Stevia?
Recommended acceptable daily intake (ADI) of steviol equivalents: 4mg/kg body weight/day (EFSA)= 280 mg steviol equivalents = 840 mg/day of RA
An example: A 335ml can of soda containing 200 ppm RA would contain 67mg of RA.An average man would have to consume around 13 cans of soda a day to reach the acceptable daily limit and do that every day of his life.

What could the true cost of sugar be …and the savings with Stevia.
Stevia Challenges and Technologies
Regulatory InconsistencyDifferent countries have different regulations on types of steviol glycosides and usage rates in food and beverage categories
US FDA sees limits in use of steviol glycosides as self-limiting – 95% TSG
EU has 95% TSG but limits type of steviol glycosides to minimum 75% combined RA and Stevioside. In addition, no more than 80ppm steviol equivalents (approx. 240ppm RA) to be used in non-alcoholic beverages.
China – not less than 85% TSG
Japan >80% in RebA, Stevioside, Reb C and Dulcoside A.

Physical Chemical CharacteristicsDifferent crystalline structure from sugar. Difficult to incorporate with sugar –settling – stratifying.
SGF and others have developed technologies to coat sugar with stevia. Result is clear crystal indiscernible from sugar. Opportunity
