TITLE , GOAL and PURPOSE
• Title : Healthy School – Healthy City• Goal : to promote healthy schools in cities by
integration of Healthy School Project in Urban Sector Reforms in Cities of Punjab for poverty reduction and improving the well being of community
• Purpose : to improve knowledge and skills about water & sanitation , health and community action of 10 primary school children and transforming government school as a healthy school
RATIONALE
• Concern for the future, future generation and future cities – There is just one place where yesterday and today
meet, recognize each other and embrace, and that place is tomorrow ( Galean 1991:103)

• Will be used to develop LIFE SKILLS• DECESION MAKING• PROBLEM SOLVING • CRITICAL THINKING • CREATIVE THINKING • COMMUNICATION • INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS• EMPHATHY• COPING WITH STRESS AND EMOTION
RATIONALE ( continued)
• Schools are located in peri urban poor locality in Lahore, Pakistan
• Community and Children are impacted by poor water and sanitation conditions ( see baseline data in Next Slide).
• Government schools are teaching without bringing in health , water and sanitation issues – reality is disconnect from teaching and learning & community action
• Need for a healthy school model so the government can integrate healthy school into its healthy cities reforms in Punjab
Participation • I will involve policy makers,
community, school children and school in the design and implementation of the program through – Presentation at Urban Unit- has
leadership role in reforms in cities
– Discussion with local politicians and City District Government ( CDG) ( as school is under CDG)
– Need assessment in schools with children, class teacher and head teacher
– Collect Baseline data on health and water and sanitation issues

• As the data demonstrate that community health is in poor state
• Water and sanitation related illness has a significant portion i.e 35% in the community health profile
• Investment in the water and sanitation sector and health promotion will have direct impact on community well being
Specific Project Objectives
1. To establish ten primary healthy school in Lahore with focus on water and sanitation issues and community action
2. To develop, test and adopt curriculum and resources focusing on water and sanitation issue for healthy school
3. To develop guidelines and framework for water and sanitation - healthy school in Punjab for adaptation by the City District Government and Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA)
List of Activities : Objective 1
1. Conduct participatory need assessment and baseline regarding water and sanitation related issues in schools and community
2. Select 10 primary school based on willingness, potential for learning , leadership and community support in Ittihad Colony
3. Presentation to Urban Unit, P&D , Mayor, Schools & community about purpose and participation mechanism
4. Notification from Education Department / CDG/Local Nazim for participating Schools
5. Develop School Heath Policy with stakeholder participation for adaptation

Scaling up
• Government adaptation of the healthy scale guidelines will support the Scaling up. The guidelines will be approved and formalized by competent authority
• Training and resources material will be disseminated through education department
• Teacher training and material distribution will be continues through CDG and GoPunjab reforms program
• Integrated it will the government of Punjab Sanitation strategy and International Year of Sanitation 2008 of UN.
