O Lord Jesus Christ, great High Priest, I pray that you call many worthy souls to your holy priesthood. Enlighten the Bishop and Vocation Director in the choice of candidates, the Spiritual Directors in molding them, and the profes-sors in instructing them. Lead the seminarians daily in your unerring footsteps, so that they may become priests who are models of purity, possessors of wisdom, and heroes of sacrifice. May they be steeped in humility and aflame with love for God and man, apostles of your glory, and sanctifiers of souls. Mary, Queen of the Clergy, pray for us. Amen

“He is Truly Risen…”

What do you think about when someone says Happy Easter? I am sure for many of us time off, and bunnies come to mind. Putting those things aside, what do you think of when you consider Easter as a celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus? Do you connect with it? Does the truth in your head make it into your heart? I have not always connected with the victory of the Resurrection in my heart. If I think of it now, I think of the divine life Jesus puts into my soul. If you have never experienced it, the apostles and Mary Magdalen give us a peek into how this feels. Mary Magdalen shouts, “Rabounni!” when she recognizes Jesus. Peter and John run to the tomb to see if it is true. The experience of the resurrection is overwhelming to them. It is an overflow of joy, an unexpected hope that they don't rightly have words for. It seems impossible because without it coming from God, it is impossible.

We can glimpse the overwhelming joy of the apostles at the resurrection of Jesus through the New Testament. What does Easter Joy look like for us? I can’t fully answer that question for anyone but myself, save that Easter Joy is over-whelming. It is a joy which cannot be hoped for outside of God because only God can give it. Myself, I remember a time when I knew the Lord, but not his joy. I couldn’t explain it; I only knew God meant more for my life than I was living. I knew there was nothing more I could personally do to attain it for myself; I was already doing what I could. In my need, I turned to my Heavenly Mother and asked her for help. The answer to this prayer was not immediate, but the response was overwhelming. I felt more joy in my heart than I ever thought possible. To give you an idea it's like breathing air for the first time and rightly wondering how it was possible to live without it before. God is more im-portant than the next breath of air we breathe. This side of heaven we cannot maintain joy perpetually, but the peace it brings can remain always.

The resurrection teaches the apostles and us that there is no suffering, no pain or dark thing that can ever ruin any-thing. God always has the last word, and he is capable of bringing beauty from everything. Moreover, whatever we suffer for the sake of His name will be repaid in abundance, in heaven. Even now we share part of our reward. God gives us what we require for life on earth He gives it in a measure which prepares us for eternal life in heaven. The resurrection opens up our eyes just a little to the meaning of our lives leading to eternity in heaven.

What can we do to experience Easter Joy? First of all, realize that we are meant to experience it. Second, we need to come to Jesus. We need to touch him, in our faith, as the apostles did with their hands. We need to bring to Him ourselves as did Mary Magdalen. Mary Magdalen is a perfect example for us. At first, all she could think of was the pain of her loss and not wanting to be separated from the body of Jesus. She carried out that faith when she asked Jesus, who she thought was a gardener, for His body. God surprises Mary, calling her by name. It melts her heart. She like many of us thought that life was over and that never again will she hear the voice of Jesus. Similarly, we sometimes feel that God never speaks to us. Jesus shatters this notion for Mary with the breath of her name. God intends to do this for each of us.

I pray that each of you experience what Mary Magdalen did. I know that it is God’s intention for all to experience this. Isn’t it sad that often the reason we don’t is either that we believe the hell we are living is as good as it gets or we don’t want to let of sinful habits in our life? Note, I said we don’t want to let go not we struggle to let go. To help yourself and all, I offer the following suggestions. First, beg the mother of the Lord for help. Your cries will never go unanswered. Second, I invite you to pray the Divine Mercy Novena. It began on Good Friday, but you can join in to-day. Jesus will hear your prayer. He will be happy that you join in when you do, and he will share with you the love and joy which is His own heart.
