What is web 2.0?
“… web 2.0 is commonly associated with web tools that facilitate sharing, interoperability, user-centred design … and collaboration on the web. These
sites give users the free choice to interact or collaborate as consumers & creators of content in a virtual community … most websites are limited to viewing content only …some popular examples include social-networking
sites, blogs, wikis, video-sharing, mashups & folksonomies …”
- Wikipedia, July 2011
What role might web 2.0 play in CANMEDS?

• Two-way interactivity • hallmark of web 2.0 = interaction with others
• Social networking • users post and share personal opinions, artistic creations and connect with
others having similar interests
• Decentralized knowledge production • a combination of experts and users generate content by uploading files,
using online word processors & sharing online documents

• Syndication • subscribe to content which comes to you based on your needs
• Software gets better as more people use it • users contribute & others review & organize it… as user base grows, so does
quantity and quality of content
• Other features? Do you have any concerns?

“…web 2.0 is difficult to define …the web as platform and architecture of participation are used to describe it [but] rather than the platform it's the spirit of open sharing and collaboration that is important…the more we share and exchange information… the more open and creative the platform becomes; hence, the more useful it is in our work.”
