The HCI and local teams screened 24 children at the four-year-old Instituto Nacional de Salud del Nino San Borja Hospital (INSN), all of whom had more serious heart issues. One reason for the more serious cases is that the local heart surgery team is performing around 200 surgeries each year on their own. The team performed life-saving heart surgeries on 12 of the screened children. Included in this group was Roberto Ibrahim, who turned 1 year old while the HCI team was in Lima. Named for HCI surgeons Robert Michler and Ibrahim Abdullah, Roberto was HCI’s youngest heart surgery patient when he received life-saving surgery at seven-days old in November 2015. We are also deeply thankful to our generous corporate sponsors who, to a great extent, enabled this trip by providing much needed medical supplies: Terumo, Cook Medical, Sorin, Abbott Point of Care, Medtronic, Scanlan, Atrium Medical, W.L.
