Headwaters Chapter August Newsletter
President’s Message August 6, 2014:
Our free trout fishing pond at Trees for Tomorrow’s Forest Fest, was a huge success. Big thanks to Bob Jacobs who set the trout pond up with the help from Eagle Rivers fire dept., and to Jim and Carol Heffner for helping Bob with the event.
Jay Hollnagel, our Gil Hamm Tournament chairman has everything ready to go
We will be leaving shortly for our Annual outing on Lake of the Woods. August 30 to September 6. If you are attending please let me know. If you have never attended one of our outings and need some help, I would be happy to mark your map, take you out to get you accustomed to the lake, or whatever is necessary to make your trip a success.
New this year is our Northern Waters Chapter Challunge with the Northwood’s Chapter. This is a one day event held here on the Eagle River Chain on September 27th. Get a partner and sign up. We want to make this an annual event.
Time to start talking about our most attended and most fun outing, the Enduro. It will be held on October 25th. This is held like all our other outings, fish anywhere from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm and will meet at the Ea-gle River Inn around 6:00 pm. This being our largest outing has the most raffle prizes. More information will be in next month’s newsletter.
Get the Net!!! Bill Jacobs
My 2 Cents: On the upper hook on your (Double Cowgirls) baits that have Flashabou or other types of material that gets caught between the treble’s three hooks at its base. I have been applying an epoxy to the middle of the hook, where they come together to keep this material from getting caught. This will also help baits that have grubs added to them for added attraction.

Old Business: Fred Brogle reported on the Pit Tag reading on Kentuck
Lake. There were 204 fish tagged over a period of five to seven days.
There were very few fish large than 48". There are several possibilities
for this result: fish are dying, being kept, speared, larger fish were al-
ready in and out of the area or did not come into the area yet. One of
the days when the DNR was out on the lake, the Tribe was out there
too. Three of the fish they had were tagged fish. Fred was on Kentuck
about a week and a half after spawn. He saw three or four dead mus-
kies. Possible explanation for the dead muskies was that during spawn
they received battle scars which are actually open wounds. The water
temperatures rose so quickly in post spawn the fish died from bacterial
infection. Fred showed us the pit tag reader and demonstrated how to
use it. The pit tag is near the dorsal fin. Fish which are tagged also have
the right pectoral fin clipped. The process seems quite easy to do. You
can read the pit tag while you have it on the bump board. Turn on the
pit tag reader, a quick scan of the back, and the pit tag number displays
on the screen. The device shuts off automatically. When you catch a
musky and it has a pit tag, there is a card to be filled out about the fish
and the person catching it. On the backside of the card is a drawing of
the lake. Mark an X on the part of the lake where you caught the tagged
fish. The unit is rechargeable and is on loan from the DNR. See Fred
Brogle if you are interested in going to Kentuck Lake and assisting with
the pit tag readings. Once we receive our own pit tag reader, R & M
will keep it at their shop. Fred also discussed how the lake goes in cy-
cles in regards to the abundance of population of fish in the lake. In
2008 there were 14.5 walleye per acre and in 2010 there were only 1.4
walleye per acre. The species go in cycles. Now the target area is for
muskies. He fears we will see a decline in the population size of the
musky.
New Business: Dale Peterson reminded the club of the Chapter Chal-
lenge on Saturday, September 27th with the Northwoods Chapter from
Minocqua. It will be held on the Eagle River Chain for members only.
Live bait will be allowed. It will be on the honor system. Wrap up will
be at 12 Pines. There will be a Big Fish Pot as well as raffles available.
During the time of Sept. 15- Sept. 23 Spring Bay at Vermillion is offer-
ing a discount with a minimum of six people.
President Bill Jacobs reminded the club our next club outing will be
Wednesday, August 13th at 12 Pines. Meet at 6 and eat around 6:30.
Joe Koschnik stated he will be at the Flea Market again on Monday,
August 11th . We have a great site there. If you have any items you
want to get rid of, contact Joe. Glenn Matula stated we have not been
paying for our site as we are a non-profit organization. Glenn made a
motion to donate $100 to the St. Germain Fire Dept. Second by Jim
Heffner. Motion Carried.
Meeting Date: Sep 10 Oct 1 Nov 5 Dec 3
Motion to Adjourn: 1st Dale Peterson 2nd by Jim Edwards Meeting
adjourned at 8:05 p.m.
Respectfully submitted by Acting Secretary,

Ole’s Joke Corner One day two Minnesotans, Ole and Sven, found themselves adrift in a lifeboat on Lake Superior. While rummaging through the boat's provisions, Ole stumbled across an old lamp. He rubbed the lamp vigorously and suddenly, a genie came forth.
This Genie, however, stated that he could only deliver one wish, not the standard three. Without thinking, or consulting Sven, Ole immediately blurted out, 'turn the entire Lake into Schmidt beer.' The genie clapped his hands with a deafening sound,
and immediately Lake Superior turned into Schmidt beer and just as quickly the genie vanished. Now only the gentle lapping of beer on the hull broke the stillness as the two men considered their new circumstances. Sven looked disgustedly at Ole
whose wish had been granted, and after a long tension-filled moment, Sven said, "Nice going Ole! Now we're going to have to pee in the boat."

Letter from Jim Korducki of Ducktail Lures:
Hi Scott,
Enclosed are some Ducktail Lures as a donation for both Headwaters MI and the Chain Pounders Musky League. If you look at the baits, you’ll see they all have either Headwaters MI or Chain Pounders written on them. Please divide them up accordingly. You can give the Pounder’s baits to Matt. Both organizations can use them however you see fit, raffle, door prizes, etc. I hope we can get together and fish sometime this year. I used to get up to Eagle River area more often than I do now. I hope to be up that way last weekend in July and second and third weekends in August and in September sometime. Let’s try and get together.
Thanks, Jim
