Heads UpNovember 2015

WelcomeWelcome to the November edition of Heads Up, our monthly round up of regional leadership development activity.

It hardly feels like two minutes since we published our last edition of Heads Up. 2015 is rapidly drawing to a close, winter is well and truly here and as ever at this time of year, activity ratchets up several gears! We have a lot on offer in the remaining months of the financial year. Here are some headlines of what is to come…

It’s not long to go until the Regional Recognition Awards! Places are limited and there are not many left, so please make sure that you sign up to reserve your place before it’s too late.

The next Co-Creation Network Winter Basecamp, to be held on 20 January in Leeds, will be our fourth Network-wide event. It will feature sessions on value creation hosted by Nadine Payne (Knowledge Project Manager at Haelo), and a workshop from NHS Improving Quality to help us review the Co-Creation Network’s aims and objectives. We encourage you to join us for the day to learn more about the Network and how Communities of Practice work, and see the energy and passion in the connections health and social care staff, academics and service users are making through this way of working.

We also have news on the new website, which is poised to launch on 23 November. Plus the latest updates from the National Leadership Academy.

We will be running a number of focus groups in November and December, which will work with organisations to develop their inclusive talent management work.

Following recent discussions at the Regional Leadership Council we will be hosting a Chief Executive Development Event in our region in February (exact date to be confirmed).

We look forward to seeing you at one or more of our events!Kathryn Winterburn

Co-Creation Network Update

The Co-Creation Network is now one year old, and is flourishing with over 300 members and 25 Communities of Practice (CoPs) active within it. We support the Network in partnership with colleagues at the Yorkshire and Humber Improvement Academy, part of the AHSN.

Hosting Basecamp Events is a means of supporting members old and new to come together, reflect, learn and connect. We try to inject new learning into the Basecamps to energise CoP’s so their work can continually develop to affect change and transformation.

We are working to improve the functionality of the Co-Creation Network website in line with requests from CoP facilitators and expect to see this completed by the end of the year.

We are also working with the facilitators more closely to encourage the Network to become self-sustaining and self-managing, by setting up regular meetings in between Basecamp events for the facilitators to share their successes and learning with each other.

Chief Executive Development Event February 2016 (exact date to be confirmed)

Members of the Yorkshire & Humber Regional Leadership Council who direct the work of the Y&H Leadership Academy have identified Talent Management and Systems Leadership as areas of importance for focus of future activity.

In February we intend to host a Development Event for Chief Executives and other System Stakeholders. The event will be a development opportunity and will also provide space to test out these identified priorities and shape the strategy for leadership & organisation development in Yorkshire and Humber.

We will be in touch shortly to confirm the date and look forward to you joining us.

For further information, please contact Kathryn Winterburn.

Seeing Systems – Oshry Workshops

Continuing on the theme of Systems and Systems Leadership, we are finalising the dates for three interactive workshops that utilise the work of Barry Oshry to help participants understand and more effectively navigate the challenges and dynamics faced when working in complex systems.

The workshops will take place early in the new year and will benefit leaders who are currently facing the challenges of partnership working and integration.

Further details will be available in early December.

Yorkshire & Humber OD Network Event

The next Yorkshire & Humber OD Network event will take place on December 2nd at Horizon in Leeds. These events are open to OD practitioners and other colleagues across the region who are engaged in the development of their organisations and systems.

The network will use this event to co-consult on real work challenges with which they are currently immersed. Myron Rogers, a highly experienced OD Consultant and leading thinker in Systems Leadership will be with us on the day to help and challenge our thinking and practice. Myron has worked with groups in a variety of organisational settings to achieve large scale transformation.

If you feel that you or colleagues you are working with would benefit from this opportunity to progress joint work, then please contact Deb Singleton.

We hope this will be an interactive and practical session that will help you with the day job.

Inclusive Talent Management

We have recently commissioned the support of a few external and internal NHS development partners to help us deliver our inclusive talent management work streams.

Beverley Powell, Equality and Diversity Manager from Barnsley Foundation Trust and Amanda Kearsley, Leadership Development Facilitator from Sheffield Teaching Hospitals are beginning a number of sponsored projects with us around career management and implementing more inclusive talent management.

We have also commissioned HNA Associates to develop an OD resource to support people with a role in improving workforce and leadership diversity.

These will be tailored to individual organisations and to ensure that we have a thorough understanding of your specific organisational needs and challenges. It will also ensure that we are directing resources appropriately.

We will be running a number of focus groups in November and December, which will explore some of the challenges and hurdles organisations are facing.

The groups will also serve to get a good understanding of requirements of individuals and teams responsible for implementing diversity and inclusion strategies across organisations.

Targeted invitations to the focus groups went out earlier in the month.

Opportunities to be involved are limited, but if you would value taking part, please contact Andrea Overton for a discussion.
