In the workplace we are overtly judged on the way we dress, walk and talk. The offi ce is a hotbed of mixed messages and innuendo so it comes as little surprise that along with requiring the usual work experience and skills, we also need to be experts at interpreting and decoding body language.

In most situations, we rely on those around us to complete projects and advance our career. Being conscious of the spoken and unspoken messages we send and receive to colleagues is vital to nurturing these relationships and ultimately gaining their cooperation and assistance.

First impressions count. Before you even open your mouth, a prospective client or employer will immediately judge you on your dress, demeanor and posture. Being well presented and confi dent portrays an aura of professionalism. Approach your counterpart with a fi rm and open handshake and maintain eye contact. Limp or distracted greetings indicate disinterest and will put off your counterpart.

Posture also suggests personality before even saying a word. An upright and purposeful walk suggests someone who is very direct and straight to the point. Someone who ambles and slouches suggests an indecisive nature.

First encounters aside, reading body language is also an essential tool at the negotiation table. If you are in an environment where information is being withheld, any extra intelligence will help your cause.

Eyes are probably one of your most powerful weapons. If in negotiation, your adversary’s eyes divert away from yours, it generally infers they are uncomfortable with the course of the conversation. People will divert their eyes for one of two things; either they are recalling some information or searching for the right word, or they are telling an untruth. Either way it’s a mo-ment of vulnerability that can be taken advantage of.

A change in glance can alter the entire tone and direction of a conversation. Another tool in power relations is out-staring your adversary. It doesn’t seem like a physically hard thing to do but it is actually requires a lot of discipline. If you can maintain it, you will show you have a stronger resolve and will help you win any negotiation.

Shining eyes indicate enthusiasm and warmth towards the subject. Conversely if someone is smiling but their eyes are not, you may be looking at a false smile. Most commonly a genuine smile will also bring ‘laugh lines’ around the outside of the eyes.

To engage another speaker or to help them convey a point, provide them with affi rmation that you agree with what they are saying or want to hear more. This can be achieved with nodding your head and smiles of recognition, encouragement and agreement. When seeing these ac-tions, the speaker’s confi dence grows and they more feel comfortable in you and the point they are trying to convey. This can be very useful in interviews or negotiations as it can place your counterpart in a more relaxed state and lesser state of alert. It can even divulge some classifi ed information that will help consolidate your position.

Our bodies can instinctively give away our true feelings. The best litigators and negotiators look for key signs and use them to sway the negotiation in their favour. For example, closed body language such as moving away with folded arms is an obvious sign of being uncomfort-able and defensive. Other signs that someone is uncomfortable include rubbing an ear or nose or moving from one foot to the other. Covering your mouth or face with your hand or rubbing you nose shows that you are unsure of yourself or lying.

Moving forward in a seat and leaning can be quite aggressive and can be very off-putting for those on the receiving end. Pointing is an absolute no-no and in some countries and cultures is even considered rude.

There are also signs of impatience that can be very off-putting for your counterpart, especially if they are the ones causing the impatience. Obviously looking at your watch or phone is bla-tant rudeness and suggests little time or respect for the person you are engaged in conversa-tion with. Then there are more subtle gestures that are still clearly noticeable like sitting back in your seat with your legs crossed or tapping a pen.

Sitting with you hands behind your head and leaning back in your chair suggests that you are confi dent…but maybe too confi dent! Similarly, using your hands as a presentation aid with palms open, shows sincerity and a desire to be forthright.

In the cynical environment of the workplace, people are more inclined to believe what you do rather than what you say. We all have preferred ways of communicating and it can be diffi cult to pick the right way to engage a counterpart. The key is to select a line of communication that is comfortable for both and remember to be conscious of both words and actions.

It’s true that most people would prefer the security of a permanent role. But rather than spending weeks or in some cases months looking for a job, contract work or temporary assignments are defi nitely a good employment option. We have experienced signifi cant growth in the number of temporary roles registered with Hays Finance Technology and week on week the demand for contractors is increasing.

You should also know that many candidates have developed successful careers as professional interim workers. There are many advantages, some of which I’ve detailed here:

Skills development: Temporary assignments offer candidates a broad depth of opportunities, experi-ence and skills development.
