Once again, it has been a pleasure to welcome former retired staff for what now has become our annual Staff Connection Day. Thisyear, our former staff who attended had the opportunity of embarking on a “school excursion” – with the chance to travel by coach toour newest campus – our Woollamia Field Studies Centre. Earlier this week, we also had the distinct pleasure of having our formerSenior Master, Mr Neil Bonnell, (Trinity staff 1972-1984) who subsequently went on to Scots PGC College, Warwick as Headmaster, visitour History students to give them a fascinating insight into what life was like at School back during the time of the Second World War.Yet another opportunity for us to reflect and acknowledge the contributions of those who have gone before us as we seek to continue toadd and develop the spirit of community in our fine School.

Vale Mr Peter Green

It is with mixed feelings that I record that we had the opportunity of farewelling Mr Peter Green at Quad Assembly on Thursday morning. As you will recall, Mr Green has not been well of late and has decided to retire from teaching as of the end of this term. Mr Green hasbeen a much valued member of our School community for some 29 years and prior to joining us he was a Headmaster in his own right, serving the needs of students in the highlands of Papua New Guinea. During his time with us, he served the School in many capacities, notably as an outstanding teacher of Biology, Christian Studies teacher, Housemaster of Wynn Jones House, boarding Housemaster ofSchool House and Master of the Senior School, as well as more latterly, Senior Master and Deputy Head Master. He was also very heavilyinvolved in Basketball and Football.

Mr Green’s educational philosophy finds itself rooted in the Christian view of Independent Education, which seeks to teach each boy notso much the subject at hand, but the boy through the subject and thus it recognises that every subject and every situation can educatethe student in matters of Christian conscience and upbringing. In short, he is a committed Christian who “walks the talk” and in thisregard, he is well supported by his life partner, Christine. Both as Head Master and as a personal friend, I have been indebted to MrGreen, not only for his professional support and insight but also for his loyalty and encouragement over these past decades. He has hada profoundly positive impact on the lives of many boys and adults within the School, for which we give praise and thanks.

I am sure you all join with me in wishing Mr and Mrs Green all the very best as they turn their hand to full time grandparenting andother new adventures which await them.

I must commend all those who planned and took part in this successful dinner, which brought senior ranks and theirparents together to celebrate the achievements of the year and to recognise the fine leadership of our departing Year 12s. It was also apleasure to be challenged and inspired by our Guest Speaker, LTCOL Stephen Wakelin.

Rugby | CAS Triumphs In Annual Fixture V GPS

Despite the cold and damp conditions on Tuesday night at Warrawee, it was a pleasure to be present at Knox to see the outstandingeffort of both the CAS 2nds and 1st XVs against traditional heavyweight rivals from the GPS. By drawing 31-all, the 2nd XV didremarkably well when one also bears in mind that to enable all those in the Squad to be seen by State Selectors, our coaches playedthe entire bench by the end of the match. Congratulations to our representatives and our CAS Co-Coach, Mr Kai Ikeuchi.

The 1st XV’s 26-nil victory was undoubtedly built on their incredible defensive effort in the first half of the match, where most of the playtook place within 20metres of our try line. The second half saw our boys build on this defensive effort to gradually emerge welldeserved victors in this annual encounter. Once again, a great performance on the part of our team members and coaches.

It is important to remember that every boy can make a difference to his academic potential if he seeks out challenges, not avoid them;is not be afraid to make mistakes, but when he does, learns from them; embraces feedback from others, not ignore it; and finally, neverputs any Assessment task result behind him until he has worked with his teacher on the knowledge and skills he needs to address allthe identified weaknesses. With this type of mindset his academic potential is unlimited.

Rugby NewsMIC

John Hart, a former All Blacks coach, believed that the quality of training corresponded with the equality of match performance. Thesame can be said for schoolboy rugby too. Whether players are performing as professional athletes or representing their schools, theattitude to training is a universal requirement.

The most obvious aspect of skills rehearsal is necessary to perform under pressure during a match, but, more importantly, a rehearsedattitude of discipline, communication and teamwork is crucial for progress to occur. These skills are transferable and have currencybeyond a simple after-school training session.

Training is designed to extend the players’ fitness, range of skills and expose them to the confronting reality of collisions and tackling.Success in contact is determined by two factors – technique and conditioning. By rehearsing the skills and repeating the physicality ofcontact, players grow in confidence and enjoy the game more.

The game of rugby provides our players opportunities to confront and overcome their fears, establishing a platform of confidence todraw from when facing future potential challenges. In our digital world where the acquisition of information is almost immediate, thereis comfort in the thought that some lessons are still slowly learned and deeply established. The 2008 album by Little Man Tateappropriately captures this sentiment: ‘Nothing worth having comes easy.’

Andrea Folli | MIC Rugby

1st XV

The body language of the 1st XV players running out onto the field through the tunnel formed by the Trinity supporters foreshadowedthe courageous performance to be witnessed by an expectant crowd.

The kick off, signalled by the referee was the last moment of hesitation. The intensity of the collisions that followed continuedthroughout the game. The Trinity players, who confidently carried the ball into contact, met with bone-crunching tackles from theirKnox counterparts. Despite the wave of defensive pressure mounted by Knox, the Trinity men refused to be passive and challenged theKnox defenders through the forward channels that opened up around the rucks.

The attrition between the forwards of both sides remained a constant feature of the first half, limiting the sweeping backline plays fromour talented backline. However, the platform established by the forwards for the majority of the first half paid dividends, when the balldid move wide, allowing Cooper Chambers (12WJ) rapid ball from the base of the rucks to feed Kordell Payne (12Yo), ByronHollingworth-Dessent (12Sc) and Lachlan Ilias (11Sc), who scored the majority of points for the team.

Nicholas Driessen (12Yo), Matthew Doyle (12Hi) and Nicholas Ginis (11Ta) stamped their authority on the game by constantlybending the defensive line, providing front-foot momentum for the pockets of forwards cleaning out over the ball. Matthew Stead(12Hi) played his usual abrasive game, reminding the aggressive Knox forwards that Trinity was prepared to match their opponents’physical style. Their opponents and spectators alike will remember this standout feature of the Firsts’ performance respectfully.

This was a day when the quality of the performance from both sides almost negated the purpose of the scoreboard. Our First Fifteenshould be congratulated for the example they set and for the spectacle of rugby they produced against a highly regarded opponent.

Andrea Folli | MIC Rugby

3rd XV

The Third XV produced a complete performance against their opposition last Saturday. The forwards established a solid platform, controlling the ball for multiple phases in the opening twenty minutes of the first half. Despite their dominance in the Knox twenty-twofor a sustained period of ten minutes, their lack of patience resulted in lost opportunities with the try-line wide open.

Although the team missed early try-scoring opportunities, confidence remained high, displayed by their refusal to take the penalty goal.Instead Taro Ide (11He) kicked a penalty deeply into Knox territory. George Fournaris (11Hi), lifted by Wilbur Tsang (11Sc) andLeontey Zhou (12Ke)well above the opposition jumper, received the ball from a quick lineout, allowing Sam Halmarick (12Ar) toquickly trigger the backline attack, resulting with Carl Wingti (12Sc) running off an inside ball from Haydon Johnson (11Ke) to scorein front of the home-side supporters and posting the first points of the game.

The team ran back to receive the kick-off with a newfound purpose. Rhys De Grut (11He) and Jonathan Wong (11Sc) combinedeffectively, cleaning out the ruck, providing Sam Halmarick (12Ar) frequent clean ball to feed a confident Ned Hatton-Ward (11Sc),who frequently attacked the defensive line, taking the opposing fly-half and flankers by surprise by his unexpected turn of speed andaggressive defence when the ball was carried through his channel. Lachlan Watson (11Fo) combined well with Carl Wingti (12Sc)at outside centre when Josh Wong moved to the forwards. His straight running and abrasive approach to the collision, often bent thedefensive line and allowed Mackenzie Roberts (12Mu) to pick up loose ball and penetrate the Knox defensive line.

Sam Austen (12Hi), who had played a full game as captain of the 4th XV, covered the open-side wing in the second half, and almostscored the second try of the game when he spotted the full back out of position, and kicked into space collecting his own kick on afavourable bounce, but was tackled short of the line. Nevertheless, he provided the momentum for Taro Ide (11He) to collect the ballfrom the supporting forwards and score under the posts.

The players’ readiness to immediately support the ball carrier provided the platform for their win. Through their win, the teamdemonstrated their potential to play a complete style of rugby. Hopefully, they will continue to perform with confidence and play foreach other.

The Under 15s have been working on ensuring that their knowledge of how to play rugby improves each week. Core skills at traininghas been the focus of weekly sessions, with improvements in passing technique and accuracy, by all players, a major focus. This focusis part of a broader philosophy of improving players skills so that when they reach playing the highest level at Trinity, all players are “onthe same page” with a skill set that should produce quality entertaining rugby.

Each session players work on a multitude of skills. Most importantly, their collision skills, be it in the tackle contest or within a rucksituation are practiced with the aim to manufacture battle hardened players. This repetition of a challenging skill is done with the desireto ensure that best practice translates to on field execution without thinking. This was most evident during the game against Knoxwhere the largest player on the field was felled by the smallest player, drawing applause from the crowd because of the instinctive, courageous technique from the player.

The 15A side is a talented group of boys, who have had recent success. However, the loss on the weekend was close and somethingthat, in the long run, is what should drive the team to improve. Knox scored their second try from a situation which was extraordinary. The Trinity line was only beaten once in the game, showing that the boys really worked hard for each other.

Lachlan White | 15A Coach

U15B RUGBY FOCUSED REPORT

Six trial matches later and two rounds into the CAS competition, the 15B rugby team can be proud of their efforts thus far. Despitefacing some significant challenges – the inevitable injuries that impact all teams and the Field Studies camps that change the dynamicsof the team regularly – these young men have not looked to make excuses and have played some outstanding rugby.

The big wins against Cranbrook, Shore, St. Patrick’s and Sydney Grammar were particularly dominant displays and the players’showcased what they are capable of. St. Joseph’s and King’s brought far sterner opposition, but despite losing these fixtures the teamshowed character and resilience, particularly against King’s. However, the team’s fighting spirit is probably best summed up by theirperformance against Barker in round 1. There had been a number of unavoidable changes to the team, but the boys rallied and put animpressive performance together to win 33-19. However, the recent loss to Knox in round 2 is a timely reminder for the squad thatnothing can be taken for granted. The loss highlighted weaknesses in tackle technique and controlling the breakdown and the matchdebrief emphasised the need to address these areas. The team have shown a willingness to learn, so I have every confidence that theywill “bounce back” from this defeat. Captain Ben Newall (9Yo) and Vice-captain Lochlan Prentice (9Mu) have led the team withdistinction thus far and will no doubt “rally the troops” once more.

After eight games of rugby, the team have scored 264 points (46 tries) and have conceded 195. They enjoy playing an expansive styleof rugby where the ball does the work and in doing so they have displayed an impressive set of handling skills. On the whole, the teamhave performed well as a unit, not looking to a handful of individuals to do all of the work and it is this very mindset that we will berelying on going forward. Legendary baseball player Babe Ruth summed this up simply, but brilliantly when he said, “you just can't beatthe person who never gives up” and should the 15B continue to adopt this attitude, I am confident that the 15B will continue to playexciting rugby in term 3.

Neil Smallfield | 15B Coach

U15C

Thank you to all the boys who have played in the 15Cs so far this season. As we have had some of our players away on Camp, and afew injuries, it has been great to have so many positive contributions from our players. In particular, Alexander Shannon (9We) andAden Forrester (9Ta), have been outstanding each week and are our most consistent players. We have also had boys who have onlyjust begun playing Rugby, with Kelevin Sha (10Du) and Joshua Richards (9Hi) learning the game with enthusiasm. One of our mostimpressive talents, Isaac Soldatos (9Hi) is congratulated for his recent promotion to the ‘A’s. When the season continues next term Iam looking forward to seeing our boys further develop their passion for playing together in the ‘Green and White’.

Football | CAS Round 7 vs KnoxLast Saturday Trinity competed against Knox in CAS Round 7. The 8A continued their unbeaten run defeating Knox 2-1 while the 7Bteams unbeaten run unfortunately came to an end. This week’s Bulletin focuses on the Year 7 Football games vs. Knox.

1st XI Vs Knox: 3-6 Loss

The 1st XI started the game well, however between the 13th and 23rd minutes Knox were clinical in making Trinity pay for the smallestof errors, scoring four goals during this time. In spite of this, Trinity did not lie down and in the 33rd minute Samuel York (10Hi)applied pressure in defence in the opposition box and the ball ricocheted out in the direction of Joshua Ward (11Sc). The Knoxdefender won the ball off Joshua, but in the process lost control and scored an own goal.

Trinity were first to score after the break with Samuel York scoring his first CAS 1st XI goal. After taking a free kick, the ball reboundedSamuels way off the wall. With one touch to control the ball, his second touch was a rocket through five advancing defenders and pastthe Goalkeeper. 2-4. Just under ten minutes later, Trinity conceded again from a goal that went top corner. 2-5. Six minutes from time,Tim Semsarian (12St) played a shot ‘turn’ pass into the path of William Todd (12Ar) who calmly beat the Goalkeeper to scoreTrinity's third goal. 3-5. Trinity were mounting pressure and creating opportunities however another Knox goal three minutes from fulltime, their victory was sealed. A disappointing loss, but, it was impressive to see Trinity play with a never say die attitude in the secondhalf.

Luke Gray | 1st XI Coach

2nd XI Vs Knox: 1-2 Loss

Round 7 against competition pace setters Knox saw a lot of team changes, positional changes through injuries and player promotions tothe first team. Trinity started the game with great ball speed and were defensively very aggressive all over the park. This saw a verycompetitive game from both sides,

with Joshua Hobden (12We) having to make only one save during the first half and what a great reflex save it was. All other chancesfell to Trinity starting with a great run and shot from Sam Yip (11La) from 25 metres that hit the inside of a post and still managed tostay out. Next chance fell to Ameer Dimeglio (12La) who made a good run into space only to see his shot blocked, with the reboundfalling to Max McCluskey (11Ar) who also saw his shot blocked off the line. In the 12th minute, Zac Lorusso (11He) and AmeerDimeglio (12La) combined well to put Nicolas Pizanias (11He) on goal with only the Goalkeeper to beat. Unfortunately, Nicolas sawhis attempt go wide of the goal. Again in the 20th minute, a great cross from the right by Zac found Ameer who got up well but couldn’tkeep his header down.

The second half expectation was to continue where we left off, but as in previous weeks, we failed to deal with a corner and werepunished. 0-1. The goal took the hunger and enthusiasm out of us and and we conceded again. 0-2. As the game progressed the Trinityboys started to regroup and in the 26th minute, Alex Williams (10St) showed great technique and struck an unstoppable shot. 1-2.Game on. The boys pushed and worked right until the end, and as a coach you can’t ask for anything more. Special mention to all thenew boys from the 3rd XI and 10A teams who stepped up and performed well.

Wally Savor | 2nd XI Coach

7A Vs Knox: 4-1 Win

The Round 7 fixture against Knox was high anticipated, as the 7As were eager to regain momentum in the premiership battle. Startingfrom the back Michael Kwan (7Ar) and Jack Greaves (7We) displayed great stability and composure, helping Trinity to keeppossession, resulting in the first goal by James Andrianakos (7Yo). Coming into the second half the side brought a new level ofenergy. Sebastian Portolisi (7Ar) was immense in both attack and defence and was rewarded with a goal. The side continued to playsmart football and crafty finishes from Isaac Cunningham (7He) and Daniel Cattana (7St) sealed the victory. Overall, it was a welldeserved three points and the team is demonstrating encouraging improvements ahead of next terms race for the title.

Zac Galluzzo | 7A Coach

7B Vs Knox: 2-4 Loss

In a top of the table clash, the 7Bs unbeaten run was to come to an end against a strong Knox side. Trinity were slow off the mark afterthe long weekend break from football and took time to get into the game. Going into half time at 1-0 down, Trinity still had a lot to playfor. The second half displayed a lot more possession and creativity from Trinity, but an early goal and a penalty against the home sidesaw Knox take leading advantages. Despite a great second half battle and fight, Trinity were to pick up their first loss of the season onhome soil. Second half goals came from Aidis Exarhos (7WJ) and James Arthur (7WH).

Amy Shepherd | 7B Coach

7C Vs Knox: 2-3 Loss

Knox being the only team so far this season to snatch a win against the 7Cs were fortunate to get the win. At the break Trinity wereextremely unlucky to be down 2-0 with numerous chances created lacking a final product in the first period, conceding two unluckygoals. Knox came out firing in the second half making it 3-0 within minutes picking up on a loose pass in the midfield. Special mentionto Rory Clunas (7Yo). Although being 3-0 down, he put his body on the line coming off the line making crucial saves and keepingTrinity in the game. Character showed as Trinity fought hard to close the gap with quick fire goals from Luke Tang (7WH) and JoelGrimmond (7He). Credit to all the boys for the character that was shown right to the final whistle of the game.

William Piras | 7C Coach

7D Vs Knox: 0-2 Loss

This was Trinity’s second loss of the season and the second loss to Knox. The 2:0 score could easily have been 6:0. As a team Knox outplayed Trinity in every way except for the fabulous goal keeping of Patrick Williams (7La), who dived to save many Knox shots. Themain difference between the two teams was the superb passing game Knox played which gave them complete control of the game. That said, Trinity had many fine individual performances all over the park from such players as Nicholas Field (7Yo), William Moir(7He), Keshav Baldeo (7He) and Lachlan McGrath (7Sc), but, unfortunately, those individual performances could not be turnedinto the required team performance.

Terry Haywood | 7D Coach

7E Vs Knox: 2-8 Loss

The 7E tried their best on Saturday however were not able to overcome a relentless Knox team. It was satisfying to see Trinity scoretwo goals and this was a result of Trinity working together as a team and finishing the chances that presented themselves. The team isencouraged to work on their skills during the holiday break and to finish strong in the three remaining matches.

David Davies | 7E Coach

7F Vs Knox: 0-5 Loss

The 7F had a much improved game against Knox on their first encounter earlier this term. After going down 0-9 in round two of CAS, itwas pleasing to see the team improve their defending. Special mention to defenders Jacob Anjoul (7La), Kevin Zhang (7Ho) andJake Paraskevopoulos (7WH) who had notable performances.

Bill Pratt | 7F Coach

7G Vs Knox: 0-14 Loss

Coming up against a quality opposition in Knox proved a difficult task for the team, as Knox were able to secure the victory. The Trinityplayers showed resilience to fight until the final whistle was blown, but unfortunately Knox were too strong on the day. As a team, thisresult can be used as a learning curve going forward, as we strive towards improving these results for next term.

AFL Report | Round 7The Trinity Victory song was not sung this weekend by any of our three teams. But if you listened carefully, the hills surrounding Batand Ball park were echoing with the chorus of our favourite song:

“Green Wave, Green Wave! Hats off to thee!”

The Green Wave was chosen to represent the surging tide of defence that would roll over our opposition, repeating like sets out theback of Wanda or Freshwater beach. I am sure Andrew Stelzer (12St) felt as if he was barely able to catch his breath before anotherwave of Riverview forward 50 entries surged towards him and his opposition full forward. Andrew did what was asked of him by thecoaches, and instead of hiding behind the rising tide, he stayed in front of his man and fought bravely through a sore back and atalented opposition. This battle was effectively a draw and considering the size and talent of his opponent, this was a huge win for ourteam and for him personally.

“Out to fight for our Victory”

This game was a top of the table clash between #1 Riverview and #2 Trinity. It was our goal to “fight for our Victory” but with injury, illness and ill-discipline, we had plenty of talent on the sideline which we would surely need to overcome such a talented side. This didnot stop the Green Wave from “fighting” and instead of a win and potentially a premiership, the “victory” became one of pride andimprovement. Once again our talisman of tireless effort was Jack Pullinger (11Ho) whose maturity and toughness continue to impresshis teammates and the coaching staff.

“Shout to the skies our Green wave war cries!”

This season has been about communication. Our team structures require an 18-man approach and this was especially evident againstsuch a well-drilled side as Riverview. What we have been working towards all year was on display in its purest form, as Riverview usedclever Ruck formations, pushed numbers around the ball and swung the ball effortlessly from one wing to the other in order to find agap in our defence. Our leaders would have taken notes on how well an AFL team can work together if given clear on-field instructionsand to rely on each other to “do your job”. We did “shout to the skies” when Julius Blum (11Ar) kicked his first goal of the season. Ajust reward for a season of effort on the interchange and a gradual improvement in aggression and skill.

“The Bravest we’ll defy!”

There is no doubt that Riverview is the standard to which Trinity is aspiring to reach. On Saturday we took one step in defying theirbravest. I saw Tom Stavropoulos (12He) launch himself at the ball. I saw Aniket Sharma (11Ta) take on three Riverview mid-fielders in a desperate attempt to slow them down to allow his Trinity Team mates to catch up. I saw Luke Cunningham (11He) andLuke Asnicar (12Yo) continue to grow in confidence and physicality against some tough opposition. All of which fills me with pridethat our programme is only one or two steps behind.

“Hold that line for the Green and the White.”

The “line” was our standards of behaviour and attitude and we held these despite an opposition taunting us to drop them. We heldthem despite the mounting pressure on the scoreboard. We held them when all we wanted to hear was the siren, not the cheers andjeers of the opposition. We held these standards and in doing so we solidified them for the Green and White to come.

“We will see it through.”

The fight is not over; with two games left and a strong desire to finish second in this challenging competition, it wasn’t long before ourminds turned to revenge against Riverview White and a potential Friday night game against Shore.

So FIGHT! For your school and your teammates!

A game like Saturday can hurt a good player’s pride only if he places value in individual success. If a good player takes pride in makingthose around him better, if he takes pride in leaving his programme one step closer to victory than when he arrived, if he takes pride inthe effort he spent fighting to help others win the ball rather than win it for himself, then a loss like this weekend should do nothing butfill that player with pride. All Game Long!

Years 9 And 10 AFL

Trinity Years 9 and 10 vs Shore

One of the most stupid sporting clichés is “It was a hard day at the office”. It might be relevant if an Executive Assistant was sinbinnedfor being offside at the coffee machine… or the Human Resource Manager got stiff armed at the photocopier. For Trinity’s Years 9-10AFL team, the offending cliché might make sense if the printer pulled a hamstring and couldn’t play, or if the stapler phoned in absentfrom the Bahamas. In short, we never had an office. Due to injury and camp, only 8 players from our regular team were available. Wehad 5 players from Year 8 who just completed their own fixture play up. Shore loaned us 5 players to make a contest of it. And make acontest of it we did!

Is there any better sight than our gazelle-like Captain, Connor Murphy (10Ta) bounding over the Serengeti plains of the Bat and BallOval and producing 3 goals? Jack Watson (10He) has left Rugby behind to play AFL. He certainly let the ribcages of a couple of Shoremidfielders know he hasn’t forgotten how to tackle. Yet he didn’t produce the tackle of the day. Nick Enno (8Hi) was giving awaytwenty kilos when he blindsided a GPS behemoth. For a brief moment Bat and Ball was the elephant wasteland from the Lion King asSimba nailed his pachyderm. Nick copped a couple of big hits himself, one collision bringing a gasp from the crowd. As our trainer ranon to check if he was all right, he got to his feet and went bounding after the ball. If Connor was a gazelle, then Nick was Bambi withattitude. Ben Estell (10He) has marked himself as a “leader by example’’, keen for the contest and to promote the football to histeammates. He’s formed a lethal ruck/midfield combination with Alex Cameron (10WH) who has a Shane Mumford-like aggression atthe bounce. At the back stands “Silent Death”- Hugh Casimir (10WH). He doesn’t give much away emotionally, agony and ecstasyproduce the same steely expression. I was thinking about giving him a cigarette burn to see if I could crack a smile from him. But I sawthe promos for the new movie “Dunkirk” last week and I reckon Hugh would be beside me in the trenches bringing downMesscherschmidts with a cap gun.

If sport is character-building, then we have the cast of Hamlet. Okay, so the season’s gone. But guess what? Camp’s over. Guys arecoming back from injury. First week back from holidays, St Ignatius won’t know what hit them.

Years 7 And 8 AFL

St Aloysius' vs Trinity at Bat and Ball Oval Saturday 17th June, 2017

After a rest week and the gaining of our first win of the season, against Barker, the Years 7/ 8 AFL team was enthusiastic about puttingup a good display against one of the favourites in the competition. St Aloysius' certainly had some tall players who would make goingdifficult in the air. Our midfielders in the first quarter really worked hard to run forward and back to defence and at times we shared anequal amount of possession. Our Ruckman Matthew Robertson (8Du) did a great job palming the ball to our rovers in NicholasEnno (8Hi), Ben Orr (7Ho) and Oscar Van Hal (8Mu).

The first quarter was a tight battle and we certainly had many opportunities to score but the Aloy’s defence was able to stop eachchallenge and clear the ball back into the centres. This continued in the second quarter and you could see the frustration of our forwardsas a number of scoring shots fell away. Jack Braga (8Du) was having a great day in defence, marking and tackling everything thatcame near him. He was also assisted by Steven Yarad (7Mu), Ben Cook (7St), Matthew Lubke (7Ta), Alan Weston (8Ta) andSimon Helidoniotis (7Ho).

The team continued to work hard throughout the game, but St Aloysius' was just too strong, winning 14.8.92 to Trinity 0.1.1.

A special thank you also goes to the Year 8 boys who played two games to assist the depleted Years 9/10 AFL team, who have largenumbers away at the Year 9 Field studies camp.

Volleyball NewsTrinity Defeated Knox 3-0 (25-8, 25-14, 25-19)

This week the Firsts took on the boys in blue from Knox. Determined to win in straight sets, the boys came out swinging. ThomasMackenzie (12WJ) and Olliver Arkell (12WJ) both repeatedly finding the floor on the opposite side of the net and totally dominatedthe attack. Some good defence from Knox challenged the Firsts to play some tactical shots and to expect the unexpected. However, theFirsts dominated, winning 3 sets to 0. Special commendation should go to the bench for their outstanding work in the third set. LukePowell (10Ho) is continually showing why he earned his spot in the Firsts as he had an outstanding overall game. Finally MatthewRorie (12Fo) should be congratulated for not only the way he played at the weekend, but also for making the 'all-star 6 at the NSW ALLSCHOOLS tri-series last week. Now the boys look to the holidays where they will play Newington and then immediately after returning toschool take on the giants of the CAS/GPS competition, Sydney Grammar and Sydney Boys High.

Ben Wheen (12Fo) | 1st VI Vice Captain

Trinity Defeated Knox Grammar 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-6)

The 2nd VI volleyball team is back at it with another win. A good feeling for the boys after their loss against Newington in the previousmatch. Ben Holzwart (12WJ), Calvin Li (11Ar) and Piers Connoly (11Ar) maintained pressure on Knox with their powerful andaccurate spikes. Benny Ouyang (11Ke) and Gabe Whitfield (12WJ) consistently ran unstoppable quicks all game that made lifeextremely difficult for the opposing team. Will Xie (11Fo) should also be commended for his excellent defence in back court. A wellfought victory that the boys should be proud to finish the term with. We look forward to playing Newington in the A.J. Rae Shield in theholidays.

Jonah Newman (12WJ) | 2nd VI Captain

Trinity Defeated Knox 3-0 (21-13) (21-9) (21-10)

With this week being the last game for the term, the 3rd VI were eager to finish strong with a win against arch rivals, Knox. Trinitystarted strongly in the first set going ahead by 12 yet complacency got the better of us and we dropped many points from unforcederrors. In spite of this trinity were able to close the set out comfortably. The second set was an improvement with the 3rd VI keepingKnox under 10 with consistent setting from Andrew Gabriel (10Hi) and Andre Athos (11Sc), our hitters, David Carreon (11St)and Alan Nader (10WJ) were able to successfully spike and win many points. Trinity carried this style of play throughout the secondset resulting in us taking a 2-0 lead. With the game wrapped up, Trinity looked forward to the third set and saw it as a challenge to trynew things which did in fact work in our favour with many of the players producing wonderful plays that saw us take the third set andthe match.

Tennis vs Knox1st And 2nd IV

Last weekend’s fixture saw Trinity Grammar School battle against Knox Grammar for round 7 of the CAS Winter Competition. Our rivalrycan best be summed up by saying it is much like the rivalry between NSW and QLD in the state of Origin with the atmosphere beingelectric and emotions and tensions always running high in both the players and spectators alike. Last season, Trinity got the better ofKnox; however, this same success was not reproduced this season nor last weekend with Trinity’s 1st IV and 2nd IV going down 5-3 and7-1 respectively. Although, Knox overpowered Trinity with some great play which I would like to commend them on, I would also like tocongratulate Trinity’s 1st IV and 2nd IV. The boys involved in these two teams put in their 110% best effort, showing dedication, commitment and “fighting for every point as if their life depended on it”. As captain, this is all I could ask for from my team and I amvery proud of them all.

The 1st IV hosted Knox, needing a vital win to secure any chance of taking the premiership for a second consecutive season. However,Knox eradicated any hope Trinity had for retaining the Premiership, playing with great prowess and domination and winning thestrongly contesting matchup 5-3. As per normal, the doubles matches were extremely close with 3 out of the 4 sets being determinedby one game, however Knox somehow took home 3 of the 4 sets with Dario Kmet (10Ke) and James McCabe (9St) winning the onlydoubles set. In the singles, there was a much closer contest, with Trinity taking two sets and Knox two sets. Not only did Dario andJames star in the doubles, but also dominated in the singles. Our first encounter with Knox saw Dario lose convincingly to the Knox 1,however this time, Dario knuckled down and with the combination of his ability to turn defence into offense and hit a winner off any partof the court due to his impeccable footwork left his opponent speechless. The second commendation must go to James McCabe who hasjust recently returned from serious wrist injury. At multiple times in the match James was down and struggling to return the powerfulshots of the Knox 3, however a Hewitt-like fighting spirit emerged within him and he took the match 7-6. Another mention must go toMatthew Nedanovski (10Fo). Although he went down 7-5 due to another serious wrist injury, there are signs that Matt will comeback the same tank he was.

Unfortunately, the 2nd IV also lost and although they weren’t as successful as Trinity’s 1sts, I feel as if I am more proud of this squadthan the 1sts. Knox 2nd IV had only lost 3 sets the whole season, and Trinity made it 4 thanks to Alex Scott (11St) and AnthonyTsougranis (11Ke). This awesome doubles duo drew in their doubles matchup 1 set- all and laid a foundation for the rest of the teamto follow, but Knox were just too strong, winning the rest of the sets and winning 7-1. In spite of Knox’s domination, Trinity’s 2nd IVillustrated some crucial improvement and showed perseverance which inspired me.

The boys will be training hard in the holidays to come back for the next 3 CAS rounds stronger than ever.

Brendan Sleiman (12Ta) | Captain of Tennis

3rd And 4th

The 3rds and 4ths knew they were in for a battle royal last Saturday, and so it came to pass. The 3rds fought hard, but, once more, onlyMatthew Herro (12WH) was able to secure a set. His singles match featured his customary blend of wickedly spinning serves, deftcrosscourt forehands and backhands rolled deep into his opponent's backhand corner. That he was still able to play his game against anopponent with a very big serve speaks volumes for him.

The 4ths found themselves in a very serious arm wrestle, and in the end Trinity won by only game after the sets were tied. JordanChen (11We) and Lukas Phipps (12Fo) were the stars. Jordan played beautifully to win both his doubles and his singles matches, andLukas produced an outstanding comeback in his singles. They deserve the warmest congratulations.

Trinity 10As and 10Bs tennis team travelled to Knox’s home courts last Saturday and despite some earlier opposition in the 10As Trinityshowed what great teams the 10As and 10Bs are, still remaining unbeaten this season.

Ashley Lucas | 3rd and 4th Coach

10As And 10Bs

Trinity 10As won 4 sets 28 games, 2 sets 20 games.

Jonathon Karagiannis (10Hi) and Justin Sleiman (10Ta) had their work cut out for them in the doubles against a very consistentpair from Knox who played the vital points well beating our pair 6 games to 1. Jason Wu (10Ho) and Aidan Tharamarajah (10Wh)showed their continued good form in the second doubles with them winning quite convincingly 6 games to 2. Jonathon had his work cutout for him in the singles against a much improved number one from Knox, and despite leading was not quite able to win the vitalpoints in some very close games finally going down 6 games to 3. Aidan stepped up for the second singles against their number threeand played a man of the match performance to out play his opponent winning 6 games to 3. This had the teams at two sets each goinginto the last two singles. I should not have been worried as Justin came out playing his usual consistent solid game easily winning 6games to 2 in a very short time, this left it up to Jason to bring us home, which he did, playing his best game since coming back to the10As, easily out classing his opponent 6 games to 1 with some great serving and powerful ground strokes.

10Bs won 6 sets 36 games to 0 sets 8 games.

The 10Bs again showed that they are a class above all the other teams not letting Knox into mainly games let alone close to winning aset.

Lachlan Sleiman (10St) and Jack Opperman (10Ta) paired up again in the doubles crushing their opposition again 6-1 with their bigserves and strong ground strokes. Dominic Lay (10St) and Ritvik Dinesh (10Ke) also out played their opponents winning easily 6games to 1.

Lachlan showed his patients in the singles with his usual consistent all-round game not letting his opponent into the set at any pointwinning 6-3 while Jack (again) didn’t let his opponent get on the board with a strong 6-0 win putting down some bullet serves and somegreat volleys, Dominic continued his unbeaten record easily winning 6-2 while Ritvik played a his ever improving, very consistenttennis game winning 6-1 with some great forehand shots and strong serving. What a great team!

9As And 9Bs

Last Saturday marked the second fixture between Trinity and Knox this season as well as the last fixture for the term. With memory ofthe scoreboard from the first fixture against Knox, the As were determined to turn things around this time. Unfortunately the fixture hada familiar start losing both doubles sets. Down 2-0, knowing that every set was needed from here on in, Lachlan Chan (9Fo) displayedgreat fight in his singles set. Unfortunately, the brave effort was not enough as we fell 3-0 down. Having lost the fourth and fifth set aswell, all eyes were on David Kim (9WH) to put Trinity on the scoreboard. Some high quality tennis on both ends combined with a faststart from David saw the match go into an intense tie-break. Despite saving four match points, Trinity were unable to seal the set asKnox earned a sweep for the day.

The Bs had a similar memory of the first fixture to the A’s but went in a little more confident knowing they had grabbed a set and losttwo tight sets in the first fixture. Despite confidence flowing throughout the boys, Knox were keen to repeat what they had done firsttime round. Some classy doubles play from Knox saw them go into the singles matches up 2-0. From there on, Trinity’s heads droppedand Knox kept the foot on the pedal, taking out all singles sets to complete a sweep.

8As And 8Bs

It was K Week, one of the most important weeks of the year, and fog rolled over the Turramurra courts as the Gentlemen in Greenarrived to do battle early on Saturday morning. Knox, one of Trinity’s most bitter rivals, were no doubt as prepared as we were for thisclash.

The As opened their account very strongly, getting to work on what we had been practicing at training. Deon Kontonis (8Fo) andKevin Lin (8Sc) played one of their best doubles sets yet as they cruised to a 6-3 victory over two very talented opponents, whileEmmanuel Grogan (8Fo) and Liam Ling (8La) showed exemplary determination, playing a very lengthy set and eventually gettingthe job done 7-6. This was exactly the start we needed against a dominant team, but Knox weren’t ready to give the fixture away justyet. The Boys in Blue really turned up for the singles matches, winning three out of four. Emmanuel was the only one able to nab a win, getting up 6-3; the other boys were less successful, though, as Deon suffered a close 6-7 loss, Kevin was out-muscled 0-6 against astrong player and Liam was edged out 4-6. This resulted in a final score of 3 sets each, and so it was down to the game score to breakthe tie; unfortunately for us, Knox got the win 29 sets to 31. Another loss for Trinity was recorded, and the boys are no longer in titlecontention. Despite this, the boys will look to finish the season strong and continue to ruffle some feathers.

The Bs were looking to keep their incredibly impressive undefeated streak intact, and they set forth to do so by implementing theirrelentless style of play. The always exciting Jim Gong (8Ar) and Justin Yang (8WH) were dominant as they excelled 6-1 in theirdoubles, while it was unfortunate for their teammates as Luka Saxena (8He) and Richard Collins (8Mu) had a walkover due to theabsence of a Knox player. Although the boys would have loved to play their doubles, it meant that we had already almost certainly wonthe fixture. In the singles, the Green Men played scintillating tennis, winning all four sets: Jim played his flashy brand of play to secure a6-0 sweep, Justin rallied vigorously to succeed 7-5, Luka’s hard hitting was too much as he cruised to a 6-3 win and Richard was brilliantin his 6-1 exhibition. This was a bittersweet victory for the Trinitarians as they were not able to play all the sets, but the boys will takethe win as they power down the home stretch. Congratulations to the mighty 8Bs for yet another weekend of elegant tennis.

Harrison Gai | 8As and 8Bs Coach

7As And 7Bs

It was another tough round for the Year 7 A and B tennis teams over the weekend both teams going down 2 sets to 4.

The 7As started with their mixed doubles pairings for the round. Martin Wong (7Ta) and Matthew Nicolas (7Ke) losing 2-6, whileMax Nguyen (7Yo) and Joshua Alha (7Ho) won their match with some great tennis 6-4. Into the singles and all the boys found ittough against some strong Knox opponents. Max Ngyuen the only boy in the As to win his singles doing it in style smashing hisopponent 6-0.

The year 7Bs found it very difficult to get some games on the board. Logan Ng (7WJ) and Justin Wang (7WJ) both beingoverpowered by some really good tennis players losing their doubles 1-6 and both their singles 0-6. James Hardiman (7Sc) andJames Kaye (7Ke) showed some real fight in their doubles, being down 1-5 managed to come back and win the set 7-5, a really goodeffort from both boys. James Hardiman once again didn't disappoint in his singles winning his match 6-3 and playing some fine tennis.

Cross Country | The King’s RelaysThe King’s Relays

Saturday 17th June 2017, The King’s School, Parramatta

It’s Relay Season! It is always fabulous to reflect on how our Cross Country teams go each week in this report as we endeavour to turn, what can be, a very individual sport into a team concern. As I have enthused about, possibly too much, we are at the top of the tree inthis regard each week in the combined CAS/GPS XC Competition. To then go even more hard-core to run a relay is even a greater teambuilding event and a greater test of depth. It is also pretty cool for the little blokes to square up against the big boys! We were missingquite a number of our Trinity Cross Country runners as they were off competing at Nowra in an ANSW event. However, those inattendance at King’s didn’t let that daunt them as they were more than prepared to step up! We ended up with medals in all threeages, and incidentally we were the only school to do so!

Racing began with a single gunshot promptly at 8.30am. The Trinity Open team bolted into third, briefly ran into 2nd and thenmaintained third for the duration of the event. First runner Nathaniel Davies (11Ke) handing over to Nicholas Hui (11Fo) and thenin-form Jonno Batson (11WH) followed by anchor man Lelland Hui (11Fo). This lot was super consistent across all legs of the Relayand highlight, each week, the fine job Mr Woods does in turning our keen runners into serious athletes!

The 16s team welcomed debutant Luke Cunningham (11He) to Cross Country as he scorched around the first lap. He handed over toPhilip Chan (10He), our season’s biggest improver to date. At lap end he sent Trinity Cross Country stalwart, Bill Zhu (10La) on hisway. He subsequently made the hand touch to Tyeson Street (11WJ) who followed in similar fashion. Tyso hit the line at pace andanother fine result looked on the cards for the 16s. I say on the cards, because you can’t actually tell where you finish until the numbersare tweaked at the conclusion of the event!

Whilst we were pondering the apparent success of the 16s team our mini men motored home! Crossing the line at pace was OwenPeck (8Fo) as he anchored this team of young Trinity Champions! Owen, James Kern (8WJ), William Martin (8WH) and CaidenCleary (7St) all grabbed the opportunity to be members of team numero uno in the 14s and they didn’t disappoint as they all ran withgreat determination. They too were a chance to be on the podium when the dishes were washed.

Excitingly at the Medal Presentation it was Trinity who was thick on the ground as the 14s snaffled the Silver bundle of medals, The 16swere tanned a lovely shade of Bronze and the Opens, as already mentioned, were also third - another fabulous day out for the lads inthe Green and White!

Other note-worthy teams were the second Opens Team of Nakul Kaushik (12Mu), Michael Ellis (12Ta), Sebastian Hahn (12St)and Joshua Roberts (11We) who were 12th and the second 14s Team of Samuel Xu (9WH), Keelan Stephandellis (7Hi), LewisPotter (7Fo) and Lachie Stubbs (7Ho) who were 11th. Have I been saying all season that we have depth? You bet we do!

Many thanks to the hosts, The King’s School. Their Cross Country layout is superb, as is possible on 1500 odd acres, and it is a great testof Cross Country running. I do hope you marvel the superb photos this week provided by Mr Desmond Chu! It is so great to catchimages, as he most definitely has done, of the boys enjoying themselves in the cauldron of Schoolboy sport - long may it continue! Ihave been pleased with my own efforts so far this season, but Mr Chu’s snaps are at another level. Many thanks! I have much to learn,as my wife often tells me!

Check out more of Mr Chu’s photos through this link:

The Holidays should certainly not be such for keen athletes, get out and have a run! Check the Trinity Holiday training roster as to whensupercoach Woods is around and either he or I shall be at the Bay Run each Saturday at 8am.

Good running,

Michael Spratt | MIC

Society of the Arts | Ray Hughes - AfricaEXHIBITION: 2 – 30 JULY, 2017OPENING: SUNDAY 2 JULY 2PM

An exhibition of West and Central African art from the private collection of Ray Hughes.

Join us for the exhibition opening with guest speaker Dr John Yu AC.

Special event during the exhibition: Ray Hughes in conversation with Simon Marnie, Presenter, Weekends, ABC Radio Sydney Saturday 22 July, 2pm | Free admission, RSVP REQUIRED.

Since his first purchase of a carved wooden “awale” or seed game in 1974, African art and objects have been an integral part ofHughes’ vast personal art collection. The scope and profundity of this collector’s eye has proved to be astounding. Driven by the desireto exhibit and collect art that intrigues, stimulates and amazes, Hughes seeks it out in surprising places.

In the early 1990s, art dealer Ray Hughes travelled to West Africa and brought back exhibitions the likes of which hadn’t before beenseen in Sydney. Kane Kwei’s decorative coffins that Hughes commissioned in Ghana became the talk of the town and ascended theirown special platform of popular local mythology. Voodoo traced beliefs and aesthetics from West Africa to Haiti and back again.

This is the first time an exhibition focussing on the extraordinary West and Central African art in his collection has been presented.

Curated by Catherine Benz and Nick Vickers.
