HELP FOR SCHOOL-AGE

CHILDREN WHO STUTTER

CAPITAL DISTRICT - Stutter-ing is a frustrating and em-barrassing problem for mil-lions of people, but it can be especially tough on elemen-tary school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-lan-guage pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. The DVD features students from first through sixth grade, some of whom talk about their experiences with stut-tering. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about themselves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Ac-tion: The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofit Stuttering Foundation is available free of charge to public libraries nationwide. Other libraries that will shelve it can contact the Foundation at 1-800-992-9392, e-mail [email protected], or visit www.stutteringhelp.org or www.tartarmudez.org.

Moonlight and votive lanterns will guide skiers, snowshoers and hikers along the wooded trails. Apple cider, hot chocolate and winter snacks will be offered around a roaring bonfire to complete the evening’s activities. Attendees should meet at 4 McMil-lan Road in Cambridge, NY at 7:30pm. (NAPS)—Technology is a driving force in today’s economy, powering innovation and creating jobs. The rapid adoption of cloud computing, mobility, social media and other inno-vations has accelerated the importance of technology in the workplace—and the need for information technology (IT) technicians.

Desktop support has long been one of the most fundamental jobs in all of IT. However, what was once a reactive job—wait-ing for the phone to ring or an e-mail to arrive summoning you to fi x a broken PC—has evolved into a proactive position that’s far more critical to day-to-day business operations.

More Than Maintenance

Technology “maintenance” is much more sophisticated in 2015 than it was 20, 10 or even two years ago. Today, it in-volves supporting handheld devices (iPads and Androids), rolling out software to thousands of computers and conduct-ing server migrations. Today’s IT technicians get hands-on ex-perience and insight into fast-changing technologies, includ-ing cloud computing, cyber security, data analysis, mobility and telecommunications.

There remains in some corners a misperception that the ma-jority of IT support jobs have been shipped overseas. The reality is that in many organizations, there are new, more sig-nifi cant opportunities for technicians. And the IT technician’s role remains the best, fi rst step someone can take to launch a career in technology.

Knowledge Workers

Today’s engineers and technologists are knowledge workers, possessing a unique combination of skills that can’t be easily outsourced or delegated.

With IT departments becoming more closely integrated with other lines of business, the technical knowledge and skills employed by IT technicians are something that can’t be de-livered effi ciently or eff ectively over the phone from a call center.

IT INNOVATION IS CREATING CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
