Who Has Your Attention?
The heavens were opened and the voice of the Father thundered: This is my beloved Son, listen to him. Mk 9:7
Who has our attention? Who do we spend most of our time listening to? We know that our modern-day news media has a penchant for bad news because bad news sells. Bad news sells because it grabs our attention and we can’t get enough of it. Most modern music genres and movies appeal to our worst instincts. The Internet is a mixed bag of misleading information. We are also aware that many television, radio and news programs bring out the worst in us. We are conscious that much of what we read on the Internet is detrimental to us. The same goes for magazines and newspapers. These media platforms evoke fears, worries, depressive feelings and negative sentiments in us. Yet, somehow, we continue to give much of our attention to them. Part of a healthy spirituality is the mortification of the ears, eyes, and tongue. That means we must be careful about who or what we are listening to. It means being wary of what we spend time watching. What we see or hear can be good or bad for us. Bad information can pollute our hearts and minds leading to negative and impure thoughts. The thoughts themselves can then lead to impure fantasies, depressive feelings and negative emotions. In fact, many depressed people are unaware that the things they watch and hear are partly responsible for their depression. So, what can we do to develop a healthy spiritual life? First and foremost, we MUST pay attention to what God says to us: “The heavens were opened and the voice of the Father thundered: This is my beloved Son, listen to him” (Mk 9:7). This is our God and Creator saying to us, “listen” to my beloved Son. Jesus is the good news. He has the words of eternal life (Jn 6:68). So we must meditate on his words day and night and let them be our guiding light. Secondly, we MUST CONSCIOUSLY reduce the amount of bad news and harmful information we consume, and increase the amount of time we spend listening to the good news. We need to spend less time watching 24/7 news, unhealthy TV programs and harmful Internet materials. We need to apply discretion to the kind of radio programs we listen to, the kind of materials we read and the kind of friends we harbor. These practices will help purify our hearts. “Finally, brothers and sisters”, says St. Paul, “whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things…. put [them] into practice. And the God of peace will be with you” (Phil 4:8-9).

¿Quién tiene nuestra atención? ¿A quién pasamos la mayor parte de nuestro tiempo escuchando? Sabemos que nuestros medios de noticias de hoy en día tienen una inclinación por las malas noticias porque las malas noticias se venden. Las malas noticias se venden porque nos llaman la atención y no podemos tener suficiente. La mayoría de los géneros y películas de música moderna apelan a nuestros peores instintos. Internet es una mezcla de información engañosa. También somos conscientes de que muchos programas de televisión, radio y noticias sacan lo peor de nosotros. Somos conscientes de que gran parte de lo que leemos en Internet es perjudicial para nosotros. Lo mismo ocurre con las revistas y los periódicos. Estas plataformas mediáticas evocan temores, preocupaciones, sentimientos depresivos y sentimientos negativos en nosotros. Sin embargo, de alguna manera, continuamos prestándoles gran parte de nuestra atención. Parte de una espiritualidad saludable es la mortificación de los oídos, los ojos y la lengua. Eso significa que debemos tener cuidado con quién o qué estamos escuchando. Significa tener cuidado con lo que pasamos el tiempo mirando. Lo que vemos o escuchamos puede ser bueno o malo para nosotros. La mala información puede contaminar nuestros corazones y mentes, lo que lleva a pensamientos negativos e impuros. Los pensamientos en sí mismos pueden conducir a fantasías impuras, sentimientos depresivos y emociones negativas. De hecho, muchas personas deprimidas no saben que las cosas que ven y escuchan son en parte responsables de su depresión. Entonces, ¿qué podemos hacer para desarrollar una vida espiritual saludable? Ante todo, DEBEMOS prestar atención a lo que Dios nos dice: "Los cielos se abrieron y la voz del Padre tronó: Este es mi Hijo amado, escúchalo" (Mc 9, 7). Este es nuestro Dios y Creador que nos dice "escucha" a mi Hijo amado. Jesús es la buena noticia. Él tiene las palabras de la vida eterna (Jn 6:68). Así que debemos meditar en sus palabras día y noche y dejar que sean nuestra luz guía. En segundo lugar, DEBEMOS CONSCIENTEMENTE reducir la cantidad de malas noticias y la información dañina que consumimos, y aumentar la cantidad de tiempo que pasamos escuchando las buenas noticias. Necesitamos pasar menos tiempo viendo noticias 24/7, programas de televisión poco saludables y materiales dañinos de Internet. Debemos aplicar discreción al tipo de programas de radio que escuchamos, el tipo de materiales que leemos y el tipo de amigos que abrigamos. Estas prácticas ayudarán a purificar nuestros corazones. "Finalmente, hermanos y hermanas", dice San Pablo, "lo que sea verdad, lo que sea noble, lo que sea correcto, lo que sea puro, lo que sea encantador, lo admirable, si algo es excelente o loable, piense en tales cosas ... . ponlos en práctica. Y el Dios de paz estará contigo ”(Filipenses 4: 8-9)

YOUTH MINISTRY
Growing up I usually went to Maryland at least once a year to visit my dads family and eventually to visit my dad when he moved out there. Growing up I have always seen this big church off the side of the freeway that I was always curious about. As I got older I learned that it was a non denominational Christian church and is in fact very large. As I was passing it a few weeks ago I got the urge to go on their website and look at what they are offering. I must say I was very impressed by all of their programs for all different ages and groups of people as well as their social media presence and their promotional videos. I even listened to some of the “pastors” messages that are recorded weekly and put on the parish website in the form of a you-tube clip. Of course I went to see what they were offering youth and was impressed by that as well. But instead of comparing our church to theirs like most people would be tempted to do, I decided to look at myself and see what I am doing and can be doing to help our parish grow and be something more amazing than it already is. I know there are areas that I can grow and I need to work on because no one is perfect and I struggle like everyone else does, but I know there’s room for growth. So as we continue to work on resolutions or remake ones that we may have already struggled with, I encourage our teens and all of you to look at your faith and how you can grow. Make tangible goals and set increments, like you would if you were lifting weights and trying to gain muscle. I have big plans for this year and can’t wait to set them into motion and see the fruits of these plans. Upcoming Events: January 16-Youth Group January 17-Edge
Al crecer, solía ir a Maryland al menos una vez al año para visitar a la familia de mi papá y, finalmente, visitar a mi papá cuando él se mudo allí. Creciendo, siempre miraba una iglesia grande a un lado de la autopista por la que siempre sentía curiosidad. A medida que crecí, aprendí que era una iglesia cristiana no Denominacional y que de hecho es muy grande. Hace unas semanas cuando lo estaba pasando, sentí la necesidad de ir a su sitio web y ver lo que ofrecian. Debo decir que me impresionaron mucho todos sus programas para todas las edades y grupos de personas, así como su presencia en las redes sociales y sus videos promocionales. Incluso escuché algunos de los mensajes de los "pastores" que se graban semanalmente y se colocan en el sitio web de la parroquia en forma de un clip de youtube. Por supuesto, fui a ver lo que ofrecían a los jóvenes y eso también me impresionó. Pero en lugar de comparar nuestra iglesia con la suya, como la mayoría de las personas tiende a hacer, decidí mirarme a mí mismo y ver lo que estoy haciendo y puedo estar haciendo para ayudar a nuestra parroquia a crecer y ser algo más sorprendente de lo que ya es. Sé que hay áreas en las que puedo crecer y debo trabajar porque nadie es perfecto y lucho como todos los demás, pero sé que hay espacio para crecer. Por lo tanto, a medida que continuamos trabajando en las resoluciones o en las nuevas versiones con las que ya hayamos tenido problemas, aliento a nuestros adolescentes y a todos ustedes a mirar su fe y cómo pueden crecer.
