PLM Upgrade Framework

To sustain and deliver in the market with its constantly changing dynamics, you need to make sure your PLM applications are capable of addressing your corporate business objectives. PLM systems are evolving to address this change impacting the way products are brought to market. The focus of this paper is to help organizations strategize and effectively upgrade their PLM system but yet aligning to their strategy. Prior to executing the PLM upgrade, it is critical that your organization has answers to the following questions:

What are the business drivers in considering for an upgrade?

Are the impacts of upgrading the PLM system assessed based on business processes and users?

o How can an upgrade be used as an opportunity for process improvement?

Can the existing PLM customizations be reduced/replaced with the features and functionalities provided by the newer version?

o Have we determined if new software features can replace other software applications?

Will the upgrade improve your business process; reduce execution time and operational cost?

Should the upgrade be approached as a comprehensive re-implementation or a simple upgrade?

PLM upgrades pose formidable challenges for many organizations. Business process/system changes, operational continuity, user resistance to change, lack of perceived ROI, user training, stakeholders adoption(suppliers, manufacturers, departments), platform incompatibilities, non-scalable/non-standard PLM deployments, multiple PLM instances, non-traceable configuration management, heterogeneous enterprise systems, integration complexities, concurrent live projects are a few to name. Several upgrade efforts do not generally encompass the upgrade issues in its entirety. A quick example is in missing to take account of other participating enterprise applications in the PLM landscape. This results in a high-priced upgrade projects by potential loss of business functionality, improper data mapping, data corruption and hence re-implementation of PLM customizations. HCL PLM Framework tries to address these areas and much more.

Key Success Stories on PLM Upgrade A leading company in the design, production, and support of communication and aviation electronics, wanted to upgrade its 7+ year’s implementation from Enovia MatrixOne v10.8 to V6. HCL upgrade team identified the extent of customization (1500 use cases) and adopted a hybrid upgrade approach that has helped the customer in avoiding re-implementing of the customizations. The frequent M&A scenario was handled seamlessly by the scalable framework hand-holding customers and collaborating systems to the host Enovia MatrixOne system.

A leading US based automotive Tier-I supplier, wanted to port applications from its MatrixOne thick client based technology to the latest updates on 10.8. The challenge here was the complex web of integration and interfaces in the PLM landscape, which had to be given minimal downtime. HCL achieved this over a weekend minimizing impact and moreover a centralized PLM system was instated covering 4 global business units.
