The Minority Access National Role Models Conference is one of the most prestigious conferences of its kind. The 2018 conference was informative, educational, and exciting for Ms. Vann. She shares, “Wow, what an honor to be selected as one of the recipients of the award. I ap- preciate the opportunity to get an award for just being or doing what I love doing, which is encouraging people, especially our students. I had no idea how awesome this conference would be. Seeing individu- als from all over the United States in National Harbor, Maryland and Washington D.C. was inspiring. The workshops started early September 28 with the College and Career Showcase. There was also the ‘Serving Diverse Communities and Engaging STEM Disciplines through Federal Programs’ session, which was extremely informative. I had an oppor- tunity to meet and connect with several people in academia from the Midwest and West Coast. Vann continues, “There was a large- screen slideshow featuring all of the National Role Model recipients. It was odd seeing my head so large in a room of distinguished scholars. It was a humbling and celebratory emotion at the same time. I noticed Dr. Safaa Al-Hamdani, JSU Professor of Biology, seated at the next honorees’ table. I felt delighted that JSU had two National Minority Role Models at the gala.” Congratulations to Ms. Vann for her achievement. In this issue... Richardson receives Martha cole awardEvery year, outstanding undergraduate Library student

workers are nominated by Library faculty and staff to receive the Martha Cole Memorial Award. The Dean of Library Ser-vices evaluates these nominations and chooses the winner for the academic year. This year, the Library was fortunate to have 18 excellent undergraduate student workers, but there is only one Martha Cole Award Winner, so competi-tion was fierce. The 2018-2019 Martha Cole Award winner is Mr. Donye’ Richardson.

Mr. Richardson started working on the 4th floor of the Library in August of 2017, and he quickly became an in-valuable resource. He began shelving with 100% accuracy within one week of his start date, and he has continued his attention to accuracy throughout his time at the Library. Mr. Richardson began a floor-wide shifting project shortly after his hire date on the 4th floor, and by Spring 2018, he was made manager of the project. To date, Mr. Richardson has shifted 70,000 monographs, over half of the 4th floor col-lection.

Mr. Richardson takes great pride in his work. With or without oversight, he makes sure that each of his assigned tasks is done correctly. He exhibits an excellent attitude when interacting with patrons and other student workers. His attention to detail and collegiality has made him a natu-ral fit for leadership. He has been an excellent mentor to new student workers and has aided in the training of four student workers in the area of shifting.

The Library offers both its congratulations and heartfelt appreciation to Mr. Richardson for all his hard work.

While much of the JSU campus was quiet during the summer of 2018, the 5th floor of the Library buzzed with activity. During the inaugu-ral year of the HCL College for Kids program, children from the ages of 4 to 7 had a little taste of the college experience. The 20-plus mini-lectures ran the whole range of the academic spectrum, from music to move-ment, drama to dance, and germs to jokes. Faculty from across the Jacksonville State community delivered programs in their areas of expertise, designed specifically for kids to enjoy. Kids who attended more than 5 sessions earned their own College for Kids diploma.

The program is the brain child of Education Librarian Laurie Heathcock. It proved to be a wildly popular draw for kids and parents from the University and Jacksonville communities, drawing in new users and rave reviews. The series of mini-lectures drew more than 30 kids per session on average.

The graduation ceremony was held on July 26, 2018. In addition to the granting of diplomas, students and parents were treated to refreshments and a student-led comedy show. As a testament to the success of the program, over 60 students received diplomas for participation. We cannot wait to see what lies ahead for the class of 2019!

PRESENTATIONS & PUBLICATIONS

The March 19 tornado impacted many cam-pus units, including the Library. The devastation caused a scramble to find space for classes for the Fall 2018 semester. Despite its own dam-age, the Library stepped up and offered help. This included extensive shifting of the collection on the 6th floor and relocating bound journals from the 2nd floor to a University storage facility. Once these collections were moved, classroom spaces were constructed. There are two spaces on the 2nd floor and one on the 6th floor that are currently being used as classrooms. In ad-dition to those spaces, the conference center on the 11th floor, open classroom on the 7th floor, two library instruction classrooms in the basement and on the 10th floor, as well as the Dean’s Conference Room and Administrative Conference Area, are available for classroom use. Other spaces in the Library may be avail-able on a case-by-case basis, with the approval of the Head of Public Services and the Dean of Library Services.

These spaces are being heavily used. Dur-ing the fall semester, there were 1,175 events and classes, including Biology, English, Music, Nursing, Physics, STU101 and University Hon-ors. The Library has created digital signage and posted information to the Library website (http://www.jsu.edu/library/libclass.html) to point students to the appropriate locations for their classes. To reserve a space, please complete the online form (http://www.jsu.edu/library/forms/libraryspacerequest.html). For more in-formation, please contact Ms. Alisha Henson, Secretary to the Dean of Library Services.

Over the summer, several of the floors re-ceived new carpet, and a new Group Study Room was completed on the 3rd floor. The Multi-Media Lab on the 6th floor will host its Grand Opening this spring. There is much work still to be done throughout the building, which will be ongoing in the next several months. Construc-tion crews are working to complete the roofing system, and soon dark brown roof panels will be installed. The 12th floor observation area is still closed, but reconstruction of that floor is planned to begin soon. Construction crews will begin replacing much of the glass in the building sometime mid-spring, and the updated lighting project should be completed soon.

Fencing and scaffolding will continue to sur-round the Library to ensure safety for all entering the building. It is uncertain exactly how much time it will take to complete the various stages of construction. Your patience is appreciated as repairs and improvements are made.
