City Year Jacksonville

Students have faced many uncertainties and adapted to new ways of learning during the pandemic. City Year Jacksonville remained a constant in students’ lives, both in Duval HomeRoom and in classrooms. From online learning to being back in the classroom, we implemented our evidence-based intervention model while using one of our foundational values, “Students First, Collaboration Always”, to find new ways to meaningfully connect with students.

Data over multiple years demonstrates the growth of Duval County Public School students working with our AmeriCorps Members.

STORIES FROM SERVICE THROUGH THE PANDEMICCity Year Jacksonville students continue to show incredible growth through the pandemic. Last year Jessie*, a third-grade student attending Susie Tolbert Elementary School increased her Lexile score by 240 points, equivalent to more than two years’ worth of growth in English Language Arts.

“Building trust was a turning point for her,” said Danielle, the AmeriCorps Member working with Jessie. Danielle knew Jessie had the ability to succeed, but it was clear the months of online learning had taken its toll on her. They worked together to help Jessie regain her motivation, which eventually led to her working harder and even stepping into a leadership role in her small group sessions. It is because of the strong and trusting relationship Danielle formed with Jessie that she felt confident to share her obstacles and work to overcome them.

Danielle smiled as she shares her excitement to be back at Susie Tolbert Elementary for a second service year. She is ready to be back with students and “make even more of an impact this year.”

COVID-19 caused an abrupt closure of schools and a shift to distance learning that further exposed long-standing, systemic inequities. City Year was able to lean into our evidence-based, holistic Whole School, Whole Child (WSWC) services and the strength of our school and district partnerships. This enabled us to adapt to local needs, innovate, and continue serving students, teachers and schools through the pandemic and as our communities re-opened schools.

HOW WE HAVE RESPONDED DURING COVID-19

As student success coaches, City Year AmeriCorps members serve full-time as near-peer tutors, mentors and role models who are trained to connect with and support student academic and social-emotional growth and success. During the pandemic, some aspects of service have looked different, but the core of our work remains the same. AmeriCorps members focus on:

• Building consistent, caring and positive relationships with students every day• Partnering with teachers to ensure students are engaged with their learning• Contributing to a sense of joy, stability and belonging to the school experience

Students have experienced interruptions in their learning and in their lives because of the pandemic. Because City Year’s research-informed services emphasize both social-emotional and academic growth, we’ve worked to provide mental health and holistic well-being supports that students and teachers need right now—and that are essential for learning to take place.

CITY YEAR’S SERVICE DURING COVID-19

OUR RESPONSE IN JACKSONVILLE

Despite the challenges and abrupt transitions caused by COVID-19, 90 City Year AmeriCorp Members stood strong and remained steadfast in their service. We started the year supporting hybrid learning in two modes: in classrooms and online through Duval HomeRoom. We worked alongside students and teachers to transition back to brick-and-mortar, ensuring a continuity of learning, relationships and emotional support for our students.

Throughout the 2020-2021 school year, one constant students could rely on amid the uncertainty was City Year’s caring presence every day.
