May 2011 be a year of happiness, good health, and beautiful music! It is a great honor and privilege to serve as the President of HMTA for the 2011-2013 term. I would like to thank the past HMTA board of 2009 - 2011: Helen Chao-Casano, Glenn Nagatoshi, Sheryl Shohet, Christine Suehisa-Jang, Susan Rudosky, Eiko Yano, Mark Russell, and Barbara Dyer who have tirelessly worked for the benefit of the organization and demonstrated the true meaning of "dedication". Special thanks to Helen and Eiko who did a wonderful job serving our organization for the past several terms and who continue to aid my transition to the new board. As president, my duties include attending meetings with officers from other states. I recently returned from the Southwest Division Presidents' meeting in Santa Barbara, where the presidents from California, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, and Hawai'i met to discuss and share ideas, problems, and possible solutions from their state. Presiding over the meeting was our very own Ethel Iwasaki, who is now the director of the Southwest Division. This year, many students from Hawai'i traveled to Santa Barbara to compete in the SW Division MTNA Competition. Listening to the numerous contestants, it was evident that the level of excellence, musicality, and musicianship has tremendously improved over the years. Congratulations to all the students who represented us in the SW Division competitions with their outstanding performances. We thank you and your teachers for your dedication, commitment, and love of music. You have definitely made Hawai'i proud! This coming March 26-30 is the 2011 MTNA Conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I will be attending along with fellow board members Glenn Nagatoshi, Sheryl Shohet and Alice Yeung. Kai Wong, student of Joanna Fan, will be traveling to Milwaukee as the winner and representative from the Southwest Division at the National Junior High School Piano Competition. We wish him all the best! This year, the executive board would like to make an effort to reach out and work together with the members. We would appreciate suggestions for events, workshop topics, concerts or other activities which would be of interest to the members. In December 2010, the HMTA board hosted our first outreach gathering and in January, our second gathering. We met informally with members and non-members in the different areas and found it refreshing to hear the various suggestions on topics of interest. We look forward to implementing the ideas and suggestions to motivate and re-energize our organization. As we work together, we will be able to accomplish many things. I would like to extend special thoughts to Louise Emery, a longtime HMTA member, who lost her husband Dwight Emery in December. We will always remember him and cherish our fond memories of Dwight as an avid supporter of music. I encourage all of you to continue attending and supporting live music in our community. HMTA will be co-sponsoring the upcoming piano recital by Joyce Yang. She is an excellent young concert pianist with ideas that transcend the norm. As you glance at the upcoming concerts on the following pages, please notice the array of talent here in our community. I'm sure we will all agree, there is nothing more invigorating than "live" music! Hope to see you at some of the upcoming concerts. ~ Aloha,Kay Letter from the President: Kay Goshi Volume 43, No. 1 Photo: Elsa Serion, Carol Nakaganeku, Francoise Berg, Mary Louise Boyd, Kay Goshi, Glenn Nagatoshi and Barbara Dyer at the HMTA Outreach Meeting held in December 2010 at the home of Barbara Dyer. Seven groups consisting of three or more HMTA members performed, and the finale of the show was Jake Shimabukuro on ukulele with Iggy Jang on violin. (photo below) They were incredible together!

The purpose of the concert was to raise money to benefit the University of Hawaii at

Manoaʼs Music Department Restoration Fund. Four thousand dollars was raised and donated! Thank you to all of the teachers who performed: Pauline Ping Bai, Steven Casano, Helen Chao-Casano, Louise Ching, Jeannette Chun, Barbara Dyer, Joanna Fan, Kay Goshi, Kathy Hafner, Bichuan Li, Elaine Ding Lu, Anne Craig Lum, Lyuba McSwain, Glenn Nagatoshi, Carol

Nakaganeku, Nikki Routman, Susan Rudosky, Elsa Serion, Laurie Shinsato, Sheryl Shohet, Christine Suehisa-Jang, Lin-yu Wang, Wendy Yamashita, Beryl Yanagi-Fujita and Eiko Yano.

The final event of the convention was PIANOMANIA, which took place on November 14, 2010 at the Neal Blaisdell Concert Hall. Over 300 students participated in this event which took months to put together. Imagine 10 pianos on-stage, two kids per piano, led by a conductor. It was an event that left everyone exhausted, albeit inspired! The students who participated were provided

with an opportunity to be accountable to one another and to have fun playing together. Great life lessons.

Twenty-eight teachers prepared students for Pianomania. Some of them also served as conductors and nineteen of them performed in the teachers group. The teachers were: Joyce Anglemyer, Diane Canada, Jeannette Chun, Barbara Dyer, Joanna Fan, Kay Goshi, Shirley Iwase, Ethel Iwasaki, Stella Kam, Lynn Kimura, Kim Kiyabu, Janice Kuniyuki, Christine Lee, Anne Craig Lum, Pavlina Lutfey, Satoko Matsu, Soo Yeun Myung, Glenn Nagatoshi, Carol Nakaganeku, Lois Ricciardi, Elsa Serion, Virginia Shepherd, Laurie Shinsato, Christine Suehisa-Jang, Gail Taira, Rosy Wang, Yumiko Demiz Yagi and Alice Yeung.

A huge mahalo to Kay Goshi who served as the convention chairperson and who organized Pianomania. It was a tremendous success!

Elaine Lu, violin; Pauline Bai, cello and Lin-yu Wang, piano, performing at the Teachersʼ Fundraising Concert.

MTNA CERTIFICATION As we contemplate where we are and how we might improve ourselves, why not make a commitment to yourself to start (and complete!) the process of becoming a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music through MTNA? When you look back at the journey, here are some of the things you might see:· You know yourself better as a teacher and musician because you have taken the time to hone your teaching philosophy. · You have refreshed or polished your knowledge of music theory, history, and form and analysis. · You have a clearer vision of your strengths and weaknesses in guiding a student through the process of mastering a piece of music. · In making the teaching videos, you have explored new ways of using technology in your studio and have modeled excellently the process of self-evaluation. · You have successfully expanded your own performance repertoire. · You have objectively looked at your studio and considered carefully the professionalism and relevance promoted therein. · You notice improved awareness of your skill in communicating with your students, their families and your professional colleagues.

· Your students and families are pleased to have been part of the process and very proud that they study with a nationally recognized professional educator.Any one of these is good and worthwhile, and going through the whole process is a truly rewarding experience.  Information on the certification process is found on the MTNA Certification website at http://www.mtnacertification.org/If you need help getting started, contact Steven Casano, [email protected], Ph: 941-8315.
