Honolulu•Honolulu is the capital of Hawaii•It is the largest city in Hawaii•Honolulu's name derives from the native words hono, meaning “a bay,” and lulu, meaning “sheltered.”•The Honolulu area was bombed by Japan in a surprise attack on the unprepared U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, which forced the U.S. to enter WWII.•The population of Honolulu is currently at 963,607.

Road System•The current state (then territorial) highway numbering system was established in 1955. Route numbers are organized so that the initial digit corresponds to the island:• Numbers beginning with 1 or 2: Hawaii• Numbers beginning with 3: Maui• Numbers beginning with 4: Molokai, Lanai• Numbers beginning with 5: Kauai• Numbers beginning with 6 to 9: Oahu
The designations of Interstate highways in Hawai‘i are abbreviated using the "H" prefix instead of the "I" prefix (e.g. Interstate H-1 is called simply "H-1" for short, NOT "I-H-1")

History
• Polynesians sailing from other Pacific islands between A.D. 300 and 600 first settled Hawaii.

• The Japanese attack on the naval base at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.
• Hawaii became 50th U.S. state in 1959.
