HAVE YOUR SAY AND FIND OUT MOREPLANNING PUBLIC CONSULTATION FOR THE STADIUM FOR WEST CUMBRIA, WORKINGTON
Your invitation to learn about the plans for the stadium and share your thoughts:Workington Leisure Centre, Griffin Street, Workington CA14 2DX4 December 2018 from 1pm until 8pm
Allerdale Borough Council were approached by Workington Town rugby league club and Workington Reds football club, to look into developing fantastic new facilities for the clubs and their fans, and also create a stadium that everyone in west Cumbria can use and enjoy. It is also hoped the stadium will act as an inspiration for the sports men and women of tomorrow.
THE PROPOSALS
The proposed development would be situated around the current location for the Workington A.F.C ground, to the north of Allerdale House, to the east of Tesco, and to the west of the new leisure centre, bowls and cricket clubs.
The scheme includes an 8,000-capacity stadium and a full-size synthetic pitch for community use. There are also plans to open-up and enhance access to the River Derwent, as well as providing a corporate hospitality suite; offices; and community facilities.
The stadium is proposed to be the home of both Workington Reds and Workington Town who approached the council to jointly look into developing first rate shared facilities that will benefit the clubs, players, supporters and the wider community.
THE PUBLIC CONSULTATION
The proposal is in the design development phase, with the project team drawing up concepts for the scheme’s layout and design. These will be available to view on 4 December, with the project team members on hand to explain, discuss, and listen to your views.
The purpose of the public consultation is to ensure that everyone can provide feedback on the design, the scheme, and the overall proposal, to help shape and design the stadium for your community. This feedback is reviewed by the project team as part of the design process to ensure that the development balances the needs of the community, the environment, and the client.
THE PLANNING APPLICATION PROCESS
The scheme will be submitted to Allerdale Borough Council’s planning department as a detailed planning application. This means that the architects’ plans will be supported by detailed technical documents, setting out all the necessary considerations for the Council. These will address topics such as flood risk, ecology, highways, and heritage.
These documents will be publicly available, along with the planning policy review, and final design, via the Council’s website.

OfficesThe eastern stand will comprise a seated area overlooking the pitch, as well as offices below it.
Riverside WalkRiverside area opened up for public
recreational use.
Hospitality suiteThe on-site hospitality suite provides event and conferencing space for hire, ensuring efficient use of space.
Main entrance and fan-zoneThere will be multiple entrances into the 8,000-capacity stadium. The main entrance will be located on the south-western corner. This would form a clear arrival point to those travelling via public transport and car/coach. As this appears to be the key focal point of the scheme, there will also be a designated fan-zone in this area.
Hybrid pitchTo meet the playing demands of both clubs, the pitch will exploit the latest hybrid technology using both plastic and real grass. Pitches like this are successfully in use in shared facilities elsewhere. Many of the premiership clubs use this pitch technology and it appeared at the recent World Cup in Russia.
Sports pitch and changing facilitiesIn addition to the main stadium, an
outdoor full-size 3G synthetic sports pitch and changing facilities will be provided, for both club training and
community use.
Community facilitiesA substantial space within the front
of the stadium has been allocated for community use; the specifics of which
are to be determined.
ParkingThe main public car park is to be located
to the south of the stadium, offering spaces for both coaches and cars.
THE BENEFITS
The scheme would see numerous benefits for Workington, including:
• New community facilities;
• Creation of an attractive area for residents, with improved access to the River Derwent;
• The sharing of stadium running costs and the improved facilities for players and fans;
• An accessible location via all transport modes;
• Encouraging a greater fan-base;
• Creation of jobs, both during and after the construction phase;
• Increased engagement for local businesses due to additional footfall;
• Increased visitors, boosting the local economy; and
• Income creation from tenants and the hospitality facilities, helping to maintain the sustainability of the stadium.
