TRAIL TALK Your monthly club newsletter January 2011 Volume 19, Number 1
P residents Message I hope you all had a
Merry Christmas.
December was a busy
club month with all
the runs and events.
To keep us busy when we were not
Christmas shopping the club
scheduled twelve 4X4 runs this
month - a run about every two and a
half days so another ―hat‘s off‖ to
our Run Chair Willie Williams and
all our loyal Trail Bosses! It‘s
obvious to me that if off road Jeeping
is your thing the H4W‘ers are the
place to be! Plus we conducted an
Adopt-A- Highway clean up headed up by Sue Guibord and John
Strong leading a small army of almost two dozen H4W‘ers –
Great job of giving back to the desert! Then we helped fill Santa‘
sleigh with all the toys the club gave to the US Marine Corps Toys
for Tots program - the kids thank you. And in case you didn‘t
have enough to do a 2nd AED Class and another monthly Trail
Boss meeting was held too. Bring it on – jeep me crazy!
And now that January is here – Happy New Year! With that we
need more runs scheduled now and into February. Check the
H4W activities page and get ‗em in. (Jeeping, Jeeping, Jeeping,
that‘s why I joined this club!)
But the holiday fun is not done yet. With all this hard work going
to events, saving our trails, going on run after run we need to
kick up our heels and celebrate. And celebrate we will! I hope to
see everyone at our annual Holiday Party on Saturday, January
15th
at Shugrue‘s. The theme will be Vegas! so dress casual or go
glitzy! On the menu - Prime rib or Salmon with all the fix‘ins!
Rodger & Diana Delk have pulled out all the stops and the fun
starts with no host cocktails at 5:30 PM. Slot machine poker - a
poker run - win prizes! Plus the club will be presenting the
annual “4 Wheeler of the Year” award to a deserving club
member. I hope to see you all there as we deserve to relish our
accomplishments. Remember - ―what happens in Vegas may get
you a Cow Bell!‖
Speaking of work the comment letter writing effort to save our
desert trails from closure by the BLM continues. Remember - no
comments received & the BLM WILL CLOSE 75% of the trails.
The clock is ticking down and the no comment period ends
February 28th. Here‘s how I see it – just take the energy you
would normally spend on a full day Jeeping the trails and refocus
that by sitting at your desk cranking out letters. Get ‗er done!
See you on the trails, Bruce

Turquoise Mine/Whipple Wash Run
November 27, 2010
A ndy Lucas lead the five jeeps out of the scenic
turnout at 0900 sharp toward Parker Dam. We
were soon in a wash heading north through
rugged terrain. Other than meeting a speeding pickup
with a U-Haul in tow the ride was safe and uneventful. Cal
impressed the group by crawling up in a shallow cave and
back out. We made several stops to stretch and engage
in serious jaw-wagging. Lunch was on a small plateau
overlooking the lake. On the return trip we stopped at
several mines and were headed back north by 3 PM or
so. Thanks Andy and Cal!

The Red Line Trail November 26, 2010
T his was the first H4W running of this trail. Because
it was Black Friday and the run was added after
the last meeting only four Jeeps showed up. We left
the Standard Wash Kiosk at 9:00am. The run proceeded
without incident although I missed a turn now and then. I
rated the Run at 3.25 but the consensus was that it should
be closer to 3.75 because of some of the obstacles. This
Run starts out like Gold Springs but goes farther north
along the powerline road before heading east and
eventually meets up with the Gold Springs trail for awhile
then up the Lost Tail, the opposite direction before
turning east and joining the Maze trail at the bottom of
Brown Shorts hill. Follows the Maze Ups and Downs
section then splits to the south and follows what used to be
an ATV trail finishing at the Scenic Turnout.
Thanks to Jim Bowen for tail gunning.

Northwest Passage
T his run was done on December 4, 2010, with 9
jeeps. Tony & Annie Planas‘ 3 sons were along so
they got to see the latest activity their parents are
enjoying. Everyone did a great job driving over the hills
and the couple of small waterfalls without any
mechanical problems. We saw the Snoopy rock, stopped
at the Boulder Mine, enjoyed the scenery, saw a couple
burros, were thankful for the pleasant day and ended the
day early enough for some of jeepers to continue the fun
by doing Ram‘s Peak.
This is a nice easy run with a couple obstacles which is
great for new jeepers or those who just enjoy scenery.
Thank you to those who came on the run and a special
Thank You to Tony Planas for being the tail gunner.

Copper Basin/Monument Peak
W ednesday, December 1st was a beautiful day for a
Jeep ride into the desert! We left the scenic
turnout about 8:35am, giving 2 missing Jeeps a
few extra minutes to meet with us, but they did not show.
We reached the Crossroads OHV parking lot about 8
miles south of Parker dam for our first pit stop and to air
down. The trail‘s ups and downs showed little to no
weather wear so no maintenance was necessary and we
had an easy drive. After descending into the sculpted red
rock area we stopped for our brownie and stretch break.
The sky was blue, the air warm, but the rocks still held
the nighttime chill. From there we headed up the trail
passing several unnamed mine entrances before reaching
our lunch area with views of Copper Basin and
Monument Peak, alongside rugged, old mining buildings.
On our return through Bowman‘s wash we saw a deer
bounding her way up the slope shortly before we reached
horse head rock. All in all it was a good day to enjoy the
outdoors with fellow 4 wheelers.
Sue Guibord, Trail Boss
Moss Wash/Walnut Creek
O n December 6, 10 vehicles met at Love‘s on I-40.
We proceeded to the Petro Station at Exit 66
on I-40 to air down, top off, and meet up with 2
more Jeeps for a run total of 12.
We proceeded on Blake Ranch Road, turning onto the
Moss wash trail to the Gold King mansion, where we
stopped for viewing of the historic site. We continued to
an area of Black Walnut Trees where we had our lunch.
After lunch we went up to the Flag Mine Rd. and turned
south to the trail that drops down into the Walnut Creek
Survivalist Camp and went out through the Walnut
Creek Ranch road.
It was a beautiful day with no snow on the roadway even
at 7000 ft. elevation.
Thank you to Snake & Willie for tail gunning and
carrying an AED, and to Andy and Nancy Lucas for
carrying an AED, and for all the information on Lichen
and the mountains‘ formation.

Board
Meet your Nominating Committee Its time to consider our club's future leaders.
A nominating committee headed by Charles Leipart has
been formed. If you have given some thought as to
serving your club as an officer or member of the Board of
Directors please contact Charles.
“Trail Talk” Safety Rant of the Month –
Remember your first time? I do but I wish I had some friends there when it
happened……What? No, not that! -
I’m talking real fun stuff - 4 WHEELING!
If you are new to the club and new to 4-wheeling, then
here are some things to do before you ever leave home in
preparation for your off-road trail adventures:
1. Make sure you know your vehicle well. Like Dirty
Harry says ―A man has got to know his limitations‖
so it‘s important to recognize your limits, those of
your vehicle, and not to exceed them.
Know how your 4X4 system works and how to use
the controls.
Know where the spare tire and jack are located and
how to use them.
Know your vehicle‘s dimensions - height, width &
length - so that you can pass through tight areas
without damage. Carry a small tape measure (how‘s
this Jim?)
Know where the lowest point of clearance is - usually
the differentials.
Get used to driving your 4X4. Get a feel for its size
and driving characteristics off road. Air down
sufficiently - 10 to 15 PSI.
Practice using the low ratio gearbox and if your
vehicle is equipped with manual locking hubs, try
them out.
Keep track of maintenance on filters, belts & hoses
and keep all fluids topped off. Inspect your tires after
every trip for damage.
And sign up for a Havasu 4 Wheelers Off-Road 101
course!
2. Always go prepared as you never know when you‘ll
find yourself stuck or broken down without bunches of
help around, so be sure to pack all of the appropriate
―emergency‖ supplies. And be aware of changing
weather conditions before you go too.
3. Always travel with at least one other vehicle. As the
sayings go ―The more the merrier‖ or Misery loves
company.‖
4. Let someone know where you are going and the
expected return time home. Or set a time to contact a
friend to let them know you are okay. Don‘t forget to
take along their phone number, and the local sheriff‘s
phone number in case of an emergency. And don‘t forget
to follow-through by calling at the pre-arranged time - so
they don‘t send out the search teams for you! And also
know that cellular phone coverage in our desert areas is
practically nil, zilch, zip, nadda. (Yikes! How about
smoke signals Kimosabe?)
5. Make sure your vehicle is in good condition and ready
for the off-road experience before leaving civilization.
Automatic External Defibrillator
I f you want to carry one of the club‘s Automatic
External Defibrillators (AED‘s) on a run, please
contact Snake Williams and make arrangements
to check one out before your run.
Thanks, Willie Williams

Perform a complete check of your vehicle making sure
your tires (including spare) are in good condition and
inflated properly. Look under your vehicle for any leaks
or mechanical problems. Ensure the gas tank & all of your
fluids are topped off. Check the condition of your steering
and brakes. All repairs should be carried out before
leaving home.
6. Pay attention to how you load your vehicle. Loads
should be distributed evenly within the vehicle if possible.
Carry extra water. And secure everything inside so it
doesn‘t shift or become a missile.
7. Always know where you are, where you‘re going, and
which route you intend to take. Be time-conscious. What
may look like a short trip on the map may take many
hours off road in 4-wheel drive -- so allow enough time for
safe travel.
Now go grab some of your Havasu 4 Wheeler
buddies and hit the trail!
Goat Hill Passage
O n December 11th, there were 10 jeeps that showed
up for the run. The very first obstacle is climbing a
steep, sandy hill, which was successfully
accomplished after one of jeepers found out he really did
need 4 wheel drive.
We did the usual stops at Boulder Mine and looked at the
Snoopy rock. The rest of the run was uneventful with
everyone doing a great job of driving. This run is noted
for the number of burros seen and they didn‘t disappoint
us.
I want to say thank you to the people who came on the run
and a special Thank You to Mike Yahrmarkt for being
tail gunner.

Desert Bar
O n December 5
th I guess a lot of the club members
had the holiday spirit and wanted to enjoy the
desert …. or.… they were just looking for liquid
spirits, because 25 jeeps showed up to do the run to the
Desert Bar.
You couldn‘t have asked for a better day…..sunshine and
no wind. Everyone did a great job driving, got their jeeps
dusty and enjoyed the festivities at the desert bar.
Thanks to everyone who came along and a special Thank
You to Dick Thomas for being tail gunner.

Christmas Tree Pass
E ight (8) Jeeps left the Chevron Station at I-40 on
Monday, December 6, at 9:00 a.m. We had one (1)
NO SHOW!
We headed down I-40 to Hwy. 95, then exited at the turn
off to Camp Ibis and walked around that area which was
very interesting. We got back in our Jeeps and drove to
the Lorans Station Road, aired down and then drove to
three (3) abandoned mines and had a good time exploring
them.
We continued our drive down the Roman Wash toward
Christmas Tree Pass and found the Roman Mine closed
down but we were fortunate enough to be able to speak
with an employee stationed there. He informed us that
they have recently discovered platinum and are working
with the BLM to get permission to begin mining for that.
We were happy to discover that previous off-roaders had
decorated at least ten (10) trees along the Christmas Tree
Pass – it was a beautiful sight to see the colorful trees
silhouetted against a bright blue sky.
We ended the run at the foot of Grapevine Canyon. Since
most of us had previously visited the petroglyphs, we
decided to go on to Laughlin. We did a little gambling
and then had dinner at the buffet.
The weather was beautiful – clear and warm. We had an
enjoyable day and everyone seemed to be happy.
We would like to thank Bob and Wanda Scholl for tail-
gunning – they did a great job and I appreciated their
help.

O.S. Point—Hualapais December 3rd, 2010
T his run was billed as an adventure, and it lived up
to its billing! This trail has intimidated us for the
last 2 years because of a severe washout on a very
steep part of the trail. The goal this time was—―we will
make it—we will not turn around!‖ The weather was
beautiful and the trip will not be forgotten! Things got
interesting when on the first real challenging washed out
hill, one Jeep bent its tie rod so the front wheels were both
aimed at each other. After spending time to straighten out
the tie rod, it was decided to park the Jeep because of the
obstacles still in front of us. After we would finish one
hard part, the CB would buzz with ―was that the hard
part, are we done with the hard part?‖ NO—it was up
ahead! When we came to ―the hard part‖—very steep, off
camber, washed out, covered with small BB like granite
pebbles—we were at the ―hard part‖. The first two Jeeps
went as far as they could very carefully and then winched
the rest of the way. Before we could get back down the hill
to assist the 3rd Jeep, he had received sufficient
―encouragement‖ from the peanut gallery, telling him that
―with the right momentum and line—he MIGHT be able
to make it‖! As I walked down I watched the 3rd
Jeep with
―momentum‖ do a beautiful backward somersault and
land on the driver‘s side. We spent the next hour
removing spark plugs and getting all the oil out of the
cylinders! Luckily no one was hurt! Ladell did a great
job of getting the Jeep running again and we proceeded
after lunch. From that point on we enjoyed a beautiful
loop trip back to our starting point with no more
―incidents‖. We agreed after our run that it was a great
illustration of the trouble a little impatience can get a
person into. Patience, and hooking up the 3rd Jeep‘s
winch, would have produced a ―non event‖. This,
however, will certainly be a lot more memorable!!!
Yes, we will do the run again—but only if everyone agrees
to ―use their winch‖

B ad Miguel‘s Mexican Restaurant was the scene of
Cook‘s Night Out held on Tuesday, December 14.
Eighteen members and one guest attended. This
was a special night as we celebrated a birthday of one of
our members. The restaurant management was kind
enough to host us on short notice and were ready for us
when we arrived at 5:00. The food was quick in arriving
after our drink orders were taken and the server was
―johnny-on-the-spot‖ when something was requested.
Many of our members stayed and visited with each other
after dinner. Thanks to all who attended.
Because of the Holiday Party in January, there will be no
CNO that month, but will resume in February.

D ecember 16th, under heavy clouds and a light
shower, 20 Havasu 4 Wheelers gathered at the
scenic turnout to pick up highway litter on our
stretch of adopted highway. A hearty bunch, we visited
with one another, sure that the rain would let up since it
―never rains in Havasu‖. However, after emptying rain
puddles from the canopy covers several times we realized
our sunny dispositions were not about to dissipate the
clouds or dry up the highway so we decided to cancel the
event due to safety reasons. Since a last hour cancellation
of the lunch was not possible we enjoyed the sandwiches
that John and Sue Strong brought for the occasion and
figured we could bring our own sandwiches for the
rescheduled clean up in January. Although the rain gave
new meaning to highway cleanup (wash up?) we would
have to return another time to do the job as intended.

El Supremo Run
S aturday, December 18th, fifteen vehicles appeared
on this cool morning at Sara Park. After a brief
drivers meeting, we proceeded to our air down
location on Mineral Wash Rd and then continued on to the
beginning of El Supremo. Now bear in mind that I didn‘t
remember a thing about this run, and I must say that I
enjoyed it very much. This run offers some very pretty
views of the canyons, mountains, several mines, and there
were several fun obstacles to play on. Upon exiting the
run, we went through Slot Canyon (also very pretty) and
up Mineral Wash to a point where Vampire Mine Run
ended. Soooooo, we did it backwards, which proved to be
interesting. The scenery looks so very different doing it
backwards, it was like a new run. We exited into a wash
and stopped for a stretch break, during which time the
ladies suggested that we go up this wash just to see what‘s
up there, as it paralleled the main road. Glad we did, as it
was a nice ride, and a whole bunch better than a graded
gravel road.
Many thanks to all who helped spot others on this run, and
thanks to Bob Hill for tail gunning. You folks make it so
much easier for the run leader - - - Thank You !

Presidents Choice December 19, 2010
T here were 9 Jeeps on the run. One prospective
member even drove all the way down from Pirates
Cove to tell me he was unable to go on the run.
That is being conscientious.
Just before we reached Cienaga Springs turn off, Steve
Perry pulled along side me to tell me that the left rear
wheel on my trailer was smoking. When we got to the
parking spot I could plainly see that the bearing had
failed.
Presidents Choice is a very technical level 4 run. The run
was going along very well, no problems. Then either
because of my superior driving skills or GREAT LUCK, I
stood my jeep up on the two left wheels, perfectly
balanced. Nothing else on the jeep touches anything. Don
Flood put a strap on me and re-righted the jeep. After that
another jeep, with out my good luck, leaned their jeep over
enough to crack the hard top on a rock out cropping. We
continued on without any other mishaps until we were at
the trailer parking spot. Steve Perry had a part break. His
welder and passenger, Dennis Kreuzenstein, said ―The
weld didn‘t fail, the part broke‖. We all had a chuckle out
of that.
Here is where it gets real good, where people were helping
others. Steve needed to trailer his jeep home. Leonard
Husted offered his trailer and Sharon would drive their
Jeep. I needed to remove the wheel and strap up the axle
on my trailer. Don Flood offered to drive my jeep home
and Louise would drive their truck and trailer. Ed Heil
followed me and Don to my house so he could give Don a
ride home.
THANKS to every one for helping and going on the run. I had more than one Tail Gunner. It started out as Ed
Heil, somewhere on the run it became Rick Burke. If I
missed anyone that tail gunned I‘m sorry and THANKS.

Ram Peak/Scotts Well December 27, 2011
T he group met at Terribles on I-40 & 95 at 9am.
From there we drove to Franconia Road and aired
down.
We had a very nice day with comfortable temperatures -
and due to recent rains - no dust. The trail into Scotts
Well had been washed out somewhat since my pre-run,
which made it more challenging and a small squeeze near
Scotts Well required some spotting. Most of the jeepers
were new members but they drove like pros.
We stopped for lunch on the way to Ram Peak, it turned
out to be a nice ride with good people. Thanks to all for
coming and to B.J. Buckhout for fine tail-gunning.

RATING DESCRIPTION
1 EASIEST: Passable by stock vehicles. Gentle fairly wide grades.
2 EASY: Use of 2 wheel and some 4-wheel drive. Trail may have some rocks, loose road surface, and ruts but a reasonable line for driving.
3 EASIEST MODERATE: 4-wheel drive with aggressive tire treads. Expect a rough road with rocks and sand that requires lower tire pressure. Substantial sections of single lane.
3¼ MODERATE: Some 4 wheel driving experience needed. Same as above with some use of high and low range gearing. These trails have a rough, rutted surface, rocks and deep sand. Sections may be steep enough to cause traction problems, narrow shelf roads with steep drop-offs and tight clearance between rocks.
3½ HARDER MODERATE: For experienced drivers. 33” tires with aggressive tire tread, one locked differential, high and low range gearing. Potentially dangerous, large rocks, ruts, steep slopes, loose surface and narrow clearances that need to be negotiated.
3¾ HARDEST MODERATE: Skilled experienced drivers only. Same as above with both differentials locked, Some strapping/winching. Very challenging sections, extremely steep grades, loose surfaces, large rocks, deep ruts and tight clearances.
4 DIFFICULT: Highly skilled experienced drivers only. Same as above with belly up, 4 to 1 transfer case or equivalent, skid plates, beefed up axles and suspension system. Probable strapping/winching. Vehicle width and wheelbase should be considered. Possible body damage.
5 HARD: All of the above. Probable body damage.
