Earth: First, feel your feet rooted deeply in the earth like a tree. You are making contact with earth, the first element. Earth is solid and will hold you stable. Feel the earth beneath you; you can even imagine roots burrowing deep into the earth. Air: Next, feel the air at your nostrils. Air makes us free and independent. Air represents the power of our minds, blowing away our fears. Feel your chest

and belly open and expand with each breath. Water: Once you have connected with air, take a moment to drink a sip of water, and follow it into your belly. The element water flows, settles, and reflects. Fur-thermore, a great cure for anything is salt water — sweat, tears, or the sea Fire: Lastly, feel the energy from deep inside your body. This is the fire of life that gives us confidence,

strength, and power in the world.

Take a moment now to

connect with each element:

earth with its stability, air of

independence, water of

reflection, and fire of life.

Ask yourself whether you

need more of any of these

qualities? If your answer is

yes. Join our “Journey to

Holistic Wellness Program”.

With warmer weather

comes those feelings of

“spring fever” that lead

many of us to want to

spring clean our homes,

shape up our bodies, and

push reset on unhealthy

habits after months of

winter sluggishness. But it’s

important to know that

spring cleaning your body

isn’t the same as “cleansing

your body” – no matter

what the latest magazine

food fad says.

The idea that our bodies

need periodic “cleansing” or

“detoxing” may be all the

rage right now, but nutri-

tionally-speaking, it’s mis-

leading.

So if you really want to

spring clean your body, skip

the fad cleanse and try the

following 3 healthy eating

habits to boost your energy

and wellness the whole

season long.

1. Clean up the sugar

Canadians eat an average of

18 teaspoons of added

sugar every day. This is far

above the World Health

Organization’s recommend-

ed maximum six teaspoons

of added sugar a day. It’s

clear we eat too much

sugar, but it’s also fairly

easy to cut back , once you

are mindful of your

consumption. Challenge

yourself to try one of these

tips to reduce how much

sugar you eat:

• If you like coffee drinks,

have traditional lattes made

without sugary syrups.

• Take a break from sugar-

sweetened beverages. Try

still or sparkling waters with

added flavor from cucum-

bers or fruit.

• Enjoy a little chocolate at

special occasions like Easter,

but only buy a small amount

so you don’t end up eating

more than you wanted.

2. Clean up the processed

foods

Not all processed foods are

unhealthy, but many of

them are high in salt, sugar,

and fat. They may also have

added colors and other ad-

ditives we don’t need. So

give them a break this

spring and see how much

better you feel nourishing

your body with real food.

Try these quick fixes:

• Pack snacks when you

leave the house so you

aren’t tempted to buy

processed food. Try fresh

whole fruits, or small

baggies of vegetables, or

cheese and whole-grain

mini pitas or crackers.

• Instead of canned soup,

which is high in salt, make

your own. It’s an easy dish

to prepare, even for new

cooks.

• Leave the processed

cereals on the shelf and

make your own granola

from whole oats, nuts,

dried fruits and honey. It’s

easier than you think, and

tasty.

3. Add some fresh

vegetables for spring

Did you know that most

adults need seven or eight

servings of fruits or

vegetables per day for

optimal health? And yet,

adults eat on average only

four servings of vegetables

and fruit per day. Luckily,

spring is the kick-off to

farmer’s market season,

and delicious new farm

produce will soon be on

offer. Choose one of these

ideas to expand your palate

this spring:

• Try a new spring vegeta-

ble. This is the best time of

year for young asparagus

and new potatoes,

fiddleheads and leeks.

• Experiment with unfamil-

iar produce; explore new

dishes

• Pledge to start some

family dinners with a green

salad served before the

main course.

Page 6: H’ulh-etun Health Society Pulling together creating possibilities … · 2017-05-02 · “spring fever” that lead many of us to want to spring clean our homes, shape up our bodies,

From Tseewtunaat Edith Loring-Kuhanga,

Executive Director:

I want to sincerely thank the Elders (Joe Norris, Chief Richard Thomas, Randy Daniels, Roy Daniels, Florence James and Dan-ny Norris) for blessing me with a Hul'q'umi'num' name, Tseewtunaat on February 11, 2017. This happened right after the Coming of Age Ceremony at the Halalt Gym. The Elders said that they wanted to recognize me for all of the hard work that I have been doing in helping them bring back some of the cultural prac-tices, especially with the ceremonies that we have been doing with the children and youth.

The Elders blanketed me and Danny tried teaching me my name, Tseewtunaat which means "Helper". Danny and the other Elders said that it is important for me to learn how to say it and to make sure that I use it so that it becomes recognized within the Coast Salish territory. So I taped Florence James saying my name and I have been practicing it every day.

Danny has challenged me to do a speech in Hul’q’umi’num which I am working on. This is truly an honour and a blessing. I thank the Creator every day that I am honoured to serve the Malahat, Halalt and Lyackson Nations.
