Strategic Plan taking the school through the subsequent four years. We are involved in this process at the moment. As part of the Self Evaluation we have begun conducting forums for parents, students and staff aimed at garnering feedback to assist us to set priorities and goals for the period of the next Strategic Plan and to listen to feedback related to our current practices. As such we will be inviting parents to participate in a feedback session led by Ernie Pietsch- a retired principal who works at Hartwell as a ‘critical friend’. As part of the process the participants will be presented with some data sets comparing Hartwell to the State and more importantly to other Boroondara schools and to other similar schools that aren’t necessarily government schools or Boroondara schools. Based on the data the participants will be asked three questions: -

What are the things we are doing well at

Hartwell?

What are opportunities for improvement?

What are the risks we need to consider as we

plan for the next four years?

They will also be asked to list up to three other considerations or potential priorities for the future, not necessarily based on the data that is presented. If you receive an invitation to participate in the forum which will be held at 9.00am on Thursday March 9th, please reply promptly letting us know whether you can attend so that we can invite other parents if you are unavailable. Likewise, if you are desperate to be included in the forum please let me know via an email to the school at [email protected] I will endeavour to include all those who contact me- providing there are not too many requests. As well as seeking feedback we are currently undertaking an extensive self-evaluation of our practices, policies, data relating to student achievement and student, staff and parent surveys. Our Self-Evaluation, compiled by the leadership team, but with input from teachers and the forums mentioned above will be presented to School Council at their March meeting. Early next term, in early May I hope, an external reviewer accredited by the Education Department will spend a full day and half another day working with the leadership team, two school principals (who are called ‘challenge partners’), a member of School Council and other teachers to analyse the Hartwell Self Evaluation document and formalise recommendations for the future. Then in term three we will write our new Strategic Plan based on these recommendations. All in all this will be an interesting process.

2017 Whole School Production- ‘The Little Mermaid’ Rehearsals will soon commence for the whole school production which will be held in the last week of term 2. Students in Years 5 and 6 have recently been auditioning for the lead parts which require acting and singing as well as for significant dancing roles. It is fantastic that so many of our senior students have the poise and confidence to take on these roles and also the willingness to commit to practices both at lunchtime and before school. I congratulate all the students who are so keen to be in the production. It is important to remind the students that whilst they can’t all have main roles, each Hartwell student and especially those in Years 5 and 6 will be part of the production. Movie Night ‘Moana’ is coming to Hartwell! There are only a few more days till our annual movie night. The weather all week, including next weekend is forecast to be fine and warm and so the movie night should be a huge success. Please make sure you book tickets this week. As you know, choc tops, popcorn, pizza and other yummy food will be available from the canteen. Tickets for the movie night are $30 per family. Please remember that for this activity students MUST be accompanied by an adult. 2017 Curriculum Days & Reflection on Last Friday The curriculum day held last Friday was a great success as it was an opportunity for the teachers to work with Lyn Watts- an educational consultant who specialises in Writing, Speaking and Listening. During the day we examined our Naplan data and other data that teachers collect throughout the year to critically investigate what we do well and aspects of the curriculum that could be improved. The teachers looked at the new Victorian Curriculum, particularly the ‘I Can Statements’ for each Year level and how these can be used with the students to give them feedback and to outline the expectations at the start of a lesson. Teachers explored how to link the writing and reading programs and learnt more about dialogic teaching and questioning. At the end of the day, the consensus amongst teachers was that the day had been very practical, relevant and helpful. There will not be a curriculum day at Hartwell in term 2. I remind you however that the next two curriculum days for 2017 are on the first day of term 3 and the first day of term 4. The dates are Mondays July 17 and October 9th.

Kris Moore Principal PE UPDATE HPS Swimmers Simply Stunning! Following a fantastic training session delivered by Dave McRae, our swimming team was nothing less than sensational in their performances at the Glen Iris District Carnival last Tuesday. We got off to a flying start taking out first place in the first seven events on the program! The blue ribbons kept coming as we placed in the top three in 43 of the 50 events on the program. It really was an outstanding display of swimming. Hartwell won the district shield by 575 points from our closest rival Ashburton. A huge congratulations to Emerson Y (S5D) who broke the 11yr 50m Breaststroke record which had stood for 12 years. Emmy set a new record of 40.37secs for the event. Well done Emerson. Thank you to Mr. O’Connor for being our Team Manager at the event and to Nick Holdsworth for assisting with scoring and travelling with the team. As usual, our parents were a wonderful support to the team. Thank you in particular to Ann Cornish for running the results and ribbons table (her last carnival!), thank you to Katherine Hadaway and Paula Paroissien for working the stop watches and to Kim Major and Alissa Turinui for assisting with the false start rope. Congratulations to the following students who qualified for the Boroondara Division Championships, which were held yesterday at the Monash Aquatic Centre.
