Four Washington County schooldistricts came together to organizethe inaugural Washington CountyCollege and Career Fair, which washeld at the Washington County FairPark March 19.

Daren Sievers, superintendent ofthe Slinger School District, said theKewaskum, Hartford, Slinger andWest Bend districts came together toorganize the event. The fair featured39 employers as well as 55 collegesand training programs. Sievers saidthe fair included representativesfrom apprentice programs, technicalcolleges, and UW System schools.Specialty schools in areas such ascosmetology were also representedat the event.

"This is everything, straight towork or we have graduate schoolshere," Sievers said.

Sievers explained the localschool districts got together andwere talking with local employers, who indicated there was a laborgap "in the middle" for high techmanufacturing jobs.

"We started talking about whatwe can do to help WashingtonCounty employers feed their employ-ment base. The more we talked, wefigured the only way to do that is toget our kids in front of them and startconversations between our kids andthe employers about the opportuni-

ties they have for employment rightout of high school or go back toschool with tuition reimbursement ormaybe going to get a trade or tech-nical college certificate — while notneglecting the four year (colleges),"Sievers said. "We're finding the fouryear job market is over-saturated, sowe're trying to help our kids under-stand the great American dream

may be obtained differently today.Sievers said the districts have

been planning the event for 18months. In addition to employersand educational institutions at theevent, state Superintendent of PublicInstruction Tony Evers also stoppedby and toured the fair.

The days are getting warmer, the ice hasmelted and the birds have returned. That canmean only one thing-spring has sprung. For

many people, spring brings a return to thegreat outdoors. It can also mean less treach-erous and time consuming driving. No moredigging your car out just to go to work, driv-ing at a snail's pace and scraping, yes, thedreaded scraping.

While it's tempting to jump in your vehicleand enjoy the freedom that spring brings todriving, keep in mind that like you, your carhas been through a lot over the winter. Thereare several things that need to be checkedand prepared for spring driving. Dependingon your level of car maintenance expertise, you may be able to do most of these thingsyourself. If not, have a professional take alook under the hood.

Begin where the rubber meets the road-your tires. Check your tire pressure. The cor-rect pressure will be printed on the tire in PSI

(pounds per square inch). If the tire is underthe recommended PSI, inflate it to that num-ber...DON'T OVER INFLATE IT. This may alsobe a good time to get your tires rotated. Thisshould be done every 5,000 to 10,000 miles.

For many areas, spring means rain so it's

a good time to check your wipThere are few things more annoyining in the rain with wiper bladesdoing their job. It's frustrating tosmear across your field of vision

wiper blade trailing across your Avoid these problems b checking blades. Replacing the blades is qand relatively inexpensive. Simpyour local auto part store, tell themcle make and model, and they'll dithe correct replacement blade. Mwill even install them for you.

Another part that is easy to chbattery. Pop the hood and make suposts on the battery are clean. If excess of corrosion on the batteryreplacing it.

Clean out the interior. Months snowy boots have no doubt taken acarpeting. It's a good time to vacuuhaps even shampoo the carpetinyou're at it, clean out the empty cand fast food bags.

Other things to consider are ththe oil and oil filter, and the racooling system. Spring is a time quainted with the great outdoorssure your vehicle is ready to springweather.

Ask someone what their favorite color is, and

chances are they won’t say a neutral like white orgray. Ask someone what color their car is, howev-er, and chances are they just might say a neutral.White, silver, black and gray are the most popularcar colors in America and in many places aroundthe world. Sure, there are various shades of white, silver, black and gray, but the fact remains that theyare all neutrals.

So, why do car buyers go for neutrals? There isno one clear answer, but many point to the invest-ment factor. A car is a major investment, and buyersneed a car color they can live with for a long timeto come. A bright yellow car at age 18 might befun, but not so fun a few years later. Purchasing adifferent color of car is not an option for most peo-

ple, nor is having the exterior repainted.Resale also factors into the equation. Bright yel-

low will not appeal to as many buyers as white or

silver will. To ensure their car sells easily later, manybuyers will purchase a neutral color. Neutrals alsotend to hide dirt and damage better than boldercolor choices.

Lot selection may also play a factor in colorchoices. Pass by a few car lots, and you’ll probablysee more neutral colors than bold. Dealers knowwhat color of cars are more likely to be bought andstock their lots with them. So, yes, while you mightencounter some orange, red, blue and green cars, chances are they will be located in a sea of white, black, gray and silver.

Budget, of course, is always a factor. Often, the bolder the color choice, the higher the price ofthe car. Bolder colors like red and orange require

specialty paint, which increases the cost. While youmay not notice the increase in the sticker price, youwill most certainly see it should you order a car

directly from the factory. Specialty reds, orangesand the like can add hundreds of dollars to the finalprice. Buyers may not care to fork over the cash fora specialty color, especially if there are other extrasmore important to them, like heated seats. Having awarm seat to slide into in frigid temperatures mightoutweigh the need for a fiery red exterior.

While neutrals are the most common car colorsand therefore the easiest to find and buy, that does-n’t mean buyers have to settle. There are variousshades of white, silver, black and gray availablefrom pearl white to matte black. As for buyers whohave their heart set on a bolder color, they will findit. However, it may cost them, both in terms of timeand money.

Regular oil changes and tire pressurechecks are essential for keeping cars run-

ning their best and using as little gas aspossible. Change your oil every 30,000miles or as recommended by the manufac-turer. You can do this yourself or have itdone by a professional at a reasonablecost. Know the correct tire pressure andkeep your tires properly infl ated. To extendthe life of your tires and ensure even wear, have them rotated regularly.

Whether new or used, a vehicle is abig investment. Most people cannot affordto pay for a car outright and must makepayments on it instead, usually for three tofive years. Regular maintenance is a mustto protect such an investment and extendthe life of a vehicle. Without it, the vehiclecan break down and require big bucks torepair.

Remember, the moment you drive thevehicle off the lot, it is yours to care for.Read the owner’s manual and follow therecommended maintenance schedule.
