There is magic in the air at the Winnipeg SymphonyOrchestra, and it is not just because we are looking forwardto Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone TM at the endof November. There are many magical moments coming upin concerts this November and December. This music willbe part of the 2017 holiday celebrations of so many adultsand children in Manitoba. These concerts transport us todifferent epochs in time and allow us to access the geniusand beauty of music composed decades and evencenturies ago.

In mid-November, Five By Design takes us back to the Mad Men Era with exciting newarrangements of music by Bobby Darin, Peggy Lee, Wayne Newton, Dean Martin andFrank Sinatra. In early December, international conducting sensation Jun Märkl takes uson a journey to Vienna with the music of Strauss and Ravel. Holiday celebrations begin inearnest with the delightful presentation of The Snowman. A week later The Tenorsdeploy their mellow charms and wonderful voices to bring us fully into the holiday spirit. On Sunday, December 10th, we host the most traditional of Christmas Celebrationswith a concert guaranteed to charm people of all ages. Steve Bell will join us onDecember 12th with a new and thoughtful take on the mystery and beauty of theChristmas story. Then the timeless texts and choruses from Handel’s Messiah inspire usanew with the true spirit of the season.

There is something there to suit every musical taste for the holiday season. The WSO also takes the lovely Manitoba Hydro Holiday Tour to Steinbach, Portage la Prairie, andBrandon to spread some seasonal cheer to other parts of Manitoba.

As you will notice in the centre pages of the Overture magazine this month, the WSO is launching a campaign to build endowment resources to provide long-term, stablesupport for Sistema Winnipeg. This program changes the lives of children and youngpeople in Winnipeg and provides the seeds for a hopeful future. Gifts to the endowmentcampaign are eligible for matching from the Government of Canada, and we encourageyou to join in making a generous gift to a program that works a magic of its own in thelives of Winnipeg inner city children and their families.

All the best to you and your loved ones for a wonderful holiday season and a happy NewYear from all of us at the WSO.

PROGRAM NOTESby James Manishen

The Water GoblinAntonin Dvorákb. Bohemia / September 8, 1841d. Prague / May 1, 1904Composed: 1896First performance: November 14, 1896(London), conducted by Henry WoodFirst WSO performance

By 1895, Dvorák wasinternationally famous, having completed his NinthSymphony (“From the NewWorld”), his three String

Quartets and the beloved Cello Concerto.Returning to Bohemia from America inApril 1895, he sought to expand his ever-present Czech patriotism further byrevisiting for its musical possibilities thepoetry of Karel Jaromir Erben (1811-1870),whose “ballads”Dvorák had already drawnupon for earlier song settings and hiscantata The Spectre’s Bride (1885).

In January 1896, Dvorák began work onthree symphonic poems: The Water Goblin,The Noonday Witch and The GoldenSpinning-Wheel. All three were completedby the end of March, with the fourth, TheWood Dove, finished in autumn.

The dark, Grimm-like narratives of thepoems Dvorák chose are in fact at oddswith the charm of the music, perhapsreflecting simple acceptance of folkmaterial at the time as just that, ratherthan psychoanalytic musical studies.

In The Water Goblin, a mortal girl isensnared into an underwater kingdomwhere she has a child with the watergoblin. Longing to see her mother, the girlpersuades the goblin to allow her back todry land. He agrees but the child must staybehind. When the mother refuses to letthe girl return, the goblin destroys thechild during a shrieking storm.

The music, masterly orchestrated, follows aloose rondo form whose watery openingmaterial and returning appearances showthe goblin’s changing faces, while thealternating episodes display the mother, the girl and the daughter’s travails.

Dvorák’s detailed, verse-inspired musicends with an epilogue, heightening thetragic atmosphere of the goblin’s motifin monotone repetition with the final Bminor chord in bassoons and lowerbrass.

Trumpet ConcertoJohn Estaciob. Newmarket, Ontario / April 8, 1966Composed: 2016First performance: March 24, 2017(Kitchener), conducted by MichaelChristie, with Larry Larson as soloistFirst WSO performance

The first movement,Triton’s Trumpet, takes itsinspiration from theGreek myth aboutPoseidon’s son,Triton,

who used his conch shell as a trumpetto calm or raise the ocean waters.Themovement begins in a tranquil stateand features a lyrical and floridcadenza for the solo trumpet oversustained tremulous strings. Anundercurrent of disturbance by thelower brass warns that this tranquilitycould be disrupted, but is calmed bythe mellifluous tones of the trumpet.Gradually, discordance in the orchestratakes over and builds to a giant waveof sound and energy, almostoverpowering the soloist. However, aswith Triton, the soloist eventuallycalms the waters and the tranquilmusic from the opening reappears, albeit in a slightly disquieting setting.

The middle movement, Ballad, features extended lyrical phrases for the solo trumpet. The stringsintroduce a primary melody that feels somewhat unsettled andungrounded. A solemn chorale playedby the winds follows; this chorale willeventually transform and become thedriving force behind a regal soundingclimax. After the portentous first twomovements, the third movement,Rondo, is a spirited balm. It is writtenin a quick 6/8 meter and begins with aquixotic melody that will returnseveral times throughout thismercurial kaleidoscope of energy, colour and fanfare.

Death and TransfigurationRichard Straussb. Munich, Germany / June 11, 1864d. Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany /September 8, 1949Composed: 1888-1889First performance: June 21, 1890(Eisenach), conducted by the composerLast WSO performance: 1997;Bramwell Tovey, conductor

Strauss was just 26 when he completed Death andTransfiguration, a timewhen composing was

actually his avocation. By then he was arising star as a conductor, assisting thefamous Hans von Bülow at Meiningen, conducting in leading opera housesand cementing acclaim with a guestappearance conducting the BerlinPhilharmonic, the best orchestra of thetime.

During his first conducting post,Strauss met Alexander Ritter, a violinist, music maven and self-proclaimed poetwho introduced Strauss to theincendiary Romanticism of Wagner.Strauss’ father, an acclaimed hornplayer, did not want his son exploringWagner and Liszt, preferring him togrow within the classical and earlyRomantic realms of Mozart andBeethoven respectively.Wagner wasnot only a revelation to Strauss Juniorbut a spark wherein a literary ideacould inspire a vivid tone poem fororchestra. Death and Transfigurationwas the third Strauss composed afterthis wake-up call, the others beingMacbeth (1886) and Don Juan (1888).

Strauss conceived his own story forDeath and Transfiguration, depictingthe final hours of a man (artist) whohad spent his life searching for thehighest ideals. Lying in bed breathingheavily, he dreams of his past quests, his childhood, goals and absence ofperfection in his strivings, achievableby no man. At the fateful hour, his souldeparts in serene comfort as the idealfinally arrives in the eternal cosmos.

Ravel loved old forms andin January 1919 he foundhimself wanting to make atribute to musical Vienna. What else but the waltz, or

in Ravel’s mind,“an apotheosis of theViennese waltz”with a “fatefullyinescapable whirlpool”that signifiedWorld War I and Vienna’s immersionin its turmoil, all the more potentalongside images of the strains ofJohann Strauss.

It took Diaghilev to push Ravel tocomplete this “choreographic poem”– a waltz-in-kind that surreally startsout of the mists, moves to theballroom and ends crashing down inblazing orchestral colours with the

waltz and its metre of three destroyed bya five-note figure at the storming climax.A musical juggernaut as it were and oneof Ravel’s most brilliant creations.

What impact does Sistema have?

What are Sistema’s immediate needs?

Sistema Winnipeg has been part of a University of Manitoba study since 2011. The study has found:

Math and reading levels are improving compared to expected grade levels.

School suspensions dropped from 10 to 1 in the first two years.

Students are scoring high on tests for their own self-concept.

Chronic absenteeism (missing at least 10% of school)dropped by 10% in first two years of Sistema.

Students have a sense of belonging in their peer groups and school.

100% of parents believe their child is more confident.

School administrations reports that families are choosing to stay in the neighbourhood to keep their child in Sistema.

98% of parents are more optimistic of their child’s future and the program GIVES its students a future of alternatives.

Sistema students are exceeding expectations on comprehensive music testing.

Our entire society benefits when youth in these coreneighbourhoods flourish and become leaders in theircommunities.

Currently funded by an annual fundraising campaign plusWSO musicians’ time.

Approximate current cost to add/maintain each student to the program is $3000/year.

Target is to add 15-30 students per year through grade 12(currently, seven years into the program, children are enrolled in grades 1 through 8.)

Only 10 new students could be accommodated in 2017 due to limited funds.

Without additional funding, the Sistema program may beunable to continue as planned.

To maintain the existingprogram through grade 12and to reach targeted futurestudent levels, the WSOintends/needs to establish aseparate endowment funddedicated to Sistema tosupplement the annualcampaign. The funded InitialFounder commitments ofTannis Richardson and theMichael Nozick family aregiven on the understandingthat sufficient additionallong-term endowment moneywill be raised from the publicat large, and (as in otherCanadian cities havingSistema programs) assistancein the form of both outrightgrants, matching fundsand/or long-term committedsupport from Federal,Provincial and MunicipalGovernments as well ascontinuing generosity fromdonors supporting theannual campaign.

PROGRAM NOTESby James Manishen

MessiahGeorge Frideric Handelb. Halle, Prussia / February 23, 1685d. London, England / April 14, 1759Composed: 1741. First performance:1742 (Dublin).

The mostcelebratedoratorio of alltime, Messiahelicits almost aninvoluntaryresponse of

recognition at the mere mention of itsname. It is the most loved of alloratorios and for all their estimablemerits, neither the Passions of Bachnor Haydn’s Creation rival Messiah’spopularity, though Mendelssohn’sElijah was, in the 19-century,considered its equal.

One feels the urge to want to sing aswith no other work of its genre, asimperial melody, invention and visionare presented with the matchlessproportion of a theatrical master. Andfor the gift of Messiah, we literallyhave to thank inches, when, as ayoung man, Handel’s life was savedafter a metal frock button deflected asword point in a duel!

Yet for all the visionary qualities in themusic’s progression from dark to light, the dramatic strength of Messiahcomes not from telling a story.Handel’s theatrical background wasinbred when he composed Messiah, but his priority was contemplation ofthe sacred rather than the dramatic.“I should be sorry if I only entertainedthem,”Handel told an admirer.“I wished to make them better.”

Messiah is an anomaly amongHandel’s two dozen oratorios in that, apart from Israel in Egypt, its entiretext is drawn from the Bible and is hisonly oratorio based on the NewTestament. Messiah was also the onlyoratorio presented in a consecratedspace during his lifetime. Notintended as part of a devotionalservice, Handel intended it as amiddle-class entertainment withpious leanings and just a stepremoved from the Italian operaticstyle ventures he had been havingsuccess with as London’s leadingcomposer, impresario and producerof opera.

But in 1740, Handel was havingtrouble keeping such venturessolvent. English public taste wasmoving away from continentalinfluences towards more localizedentertainments, spurred on by thesuccess of the 1728 satirical romp The Beggar’s Opera by Gay andPepusch. Rumors abounded thatHandel was finished.

Handel withdrew from public life inthe early months of 1741 and seldomventured out. But that summer, hecame across a small book of Biblicaltexts assembled by Charles Jennens, awealthy and pretentious type but agreat admirer of the composer.Handel’s imagination lit up.

Rumor has it that Handel confinedhimself to his room, completingMessiah on September 14, 1741 injust over three weeks, but evidenceshows that the Lord Lieutenant ofDublin had visited Handel early in1741 to propose a new work for aseries of Dublin charity concerts.

Handel traveled to Dublin thatNovember and after thedisappointments of London, tookmuch pleasure in beingenthusiastically received by theIrish press. Preparations for thepremiere went on throughout thewinter of 1742. Choristers wererecruited from Dublin churchesand excitement elevated to feverpitch.

The premiere on April 13, 1742was a triumph. Handel couldn’twait to take it home to London.

In London however, it was felt thatMessiah’s texts would becompromised by performances intheatres propagated by actors ofquestionable morals. Messiahreceived a few subsequentperformances but had to waituntil more liberal times arrived in1750 when Handel staged aperformance to benefit London’sFoundling Hospital, a charity forabandoned children.

Such good will further ensuredMessiah’s success, inspiring annualperformances for the FoundlingHospital up until Handel’s deathin 1759. It was the last workHandel directed, just eight daysbefore his death and is the onlymajor Baroque work that has anunbroken performance traditionfrom the time of its creation tothe present day.

Pre-concert Activities 1:00 p.m.Sunday, December 17 2:00 p.m.

In 1982, Raymond Briggs’classic picture bookThe Snowman was adapted as a 26-minuteanimated film by TVC, at the time the UK’slongest established animation studio, underthe direction of Dianne Jackson.

Having spotted the potential for creating aunique and ground-breaking animation, JohnCoates instructed two trusted assistantanimators, Hilary Audus and Joanna Harrison,to go and buy a dozen copies of the book forthe purpose of dissecting it and storyboardingthe very first animatic.

This quickly turned into a hand-drawnanimation bible which became the templatefor the final film. John Coates’passion forbringing the book to the screen quickly caughtthe attention of Sir Jeremy Issacs, former ChiefExecutive of Channel 4, who believed that itwould be a fantastic piece for the channel andstand out from the rest of its schedule.

The Snowman was first televised on 26December 1982 and has since been shownevery year on Channel 4.

In keeping with the book, the film of TheSnowman is wordless and free of dialogue, except for the now iconic,“Walking in the Air”which features as part of a now timelessmusical score. Both song and score werewritten and composed by Howard Blake, who had written the melody some yearsbefore having been inspired by a walk on aCornish beach.

The score for the film was originally performedby the Sinfonia of London, with ‘Walking in theAir’being sung in the film by chorister PeterAuty, often cited as a famous case of mistakenidentity, as three years later the song wasfamously re-recorded by Welsh chorister AledJones in a single which reached number five in the UK charts.
