Word of welcome

2017 marks the 13th year since our annual National Schools Literature Festival

(NSLF) started in 2005. NSLF serves as a platform for students of Literature to

interact and to share ideas through debates, have friendly competitions while

putting up a performance, all with the aim of motivating students to enjoy and

celebrate Literature. NSLF also enables teachers from different schools to come

together with a shared mission and purpose and to form networks with one

another. We are encouraged to see growth in the attendance at the festival

each year. This year, we have a record turn-out of 106 secondary schools. This

testifies to the importance of Literature in our education system and in society.

Literature enables us to think critically, empathetically, and philosophically at the

same time. It allows us to step into other worlds, see from other points of view,

and reflect on the values and cultural beliefs of others. That is why teachers from

the NSLF organising committee have continually worked very hard to bring this

festival to you yearly.

This year, we are very privileged to have Dr. Dennis Yeo and Ms. Kausikan as our

keynote speakers. They will share important ideas about why literature is

important in developing critical readers of texts. As you attend the respective

talks and events, we hope you will be enthused and inspired to celebrate

Literature!

About the NSLF

The goals of the NSLF are:

To bring Literature teachers together with a shared mission and purpose.

To provide a platform which teachers can use to enthuse and inspire their

students in studying Literature.

To motivate more students to take Literature at the upper secondary level.

The NSLF is a ground-up event that was started in 2005. It is collaboratively organised by

teachers from various schools with support from organisations including the Ministry of

Education, National Institute of Education, and National Library Board.

Dr Dennis Yeo

Dr Dennis Yeo has taught at primary, secondary,

junior college and tertiary levels in a teaching

career spanning close to three decades. His

school leadership positions include Subject Head

(Literature), Head of Department

(Pastoral Care & Career Guidance) and

Vice-Principal of Pioneer Junior College. He

lectures at the English Language and Literature Academic Group

at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological

University, Singapore. His research interests include film, popular

culture, literature pedagogy and Gothic literature. He is the

author of Telltale 11 Stories: A Study Companion and a co-editor

of Ku*lit: Asian Literature for the Language Classroom and

Teaching Literature in Singapore Secondary Schools. He received

the NIE Excellence in Teaching Award in 2013. This is the fourth

time he is delivering the keynote address at the National Schools

Literature Festival since 2013.

Ms Kalyani Kausikan

Kalyani Kausikan has taught A level

literature since 1984. She is Subject

Head, English Literature at St Andrew’s

Junior College.

Doris Lessing’s advice, “if you read, you

can learn to think for yourself”, is the

lesson she hopes her students take with

them beyond the classroom and

examinations.
