Program Notes Absolutely Awesome

This chart contains great musical moments with interesting chord changes. When a section of the band is playing the melody, the rest of the band is playing swinging backgrounds making use of the popular “Charleston” beat.

Arranger Lennie Niehaus has been the alto sax soloist and arranger for the famous Stan Kenton Orchestra. He has also recorded several albums on his own with jazz greats Mel Lewis, Shelly Manne, Jimmy Giuffre, and Hampton Hawes. Lennie has been the composer for many of Clint Eastwood’s films including Pale Rider, Unforgiven, The Bridges of Madison County, Absolute Power, and Bird. In 1994 Lennie Niehaus won an Emmy for his score for the Showtime film Lush Life. Along Came Betty

The instrumental version of "Along Came Betty" was composed by Benny Golson and first appeared on Art Blakey's album entitled Jazz Profile in 1954. The composition was inspired by a woman of the same name that the composer was dating at the time. A vocal rendition of the song was performed as early as the mid-'50s by singer and songwriter Jon Hendricks, and this vocal version was reissued on a compilation in 1999 entitled Bebop Singers. "Along Came Betty" features bebop's hyperkinetic hipness with a bluesier feel and a funkier beat. The song is an oft-performed jazz standard that has been consistently recorded as a vehicle for saxophonists, guitarists, and pianists for over 50 years.

Arranger Alan Baylock is quickly becoming recognized as one of the creative you jazz composers and arrangers today. He in is demand as a composer and arranger, He is chief arranger for the USAF Airmen of Note. In 2015 he was appointed to the faculty at North Texas State University where he directs the one O’clock

jazz Band. Body and Soul

“Body and Soul" was written in New York City for the British actress and singer Gertrude Lawrence, who introduced it to London audiences. Published in England, it was first performed in the U.S.A. by Libby Holman in the 1930 Broadway revue Three's a Crowd. In Britain the orchestras of Jack Hylton and Ambrose recorded the ballad first in the same week in February, 1930. In the U.S.A. the tune grew quickly in popularity, and by the end of 1930 at least eleven American bands had recorded it. Louis Armstrong was the first jazz musician to record "Body and Soul", in October 1930, , but it was Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra (Jack Fulton, vocal) who popularized it in U.S.A. Their recording hit the charts on October 11, 1930, and held the number one spot for six weeks.

Arranger Matt Harris has degrees from University of Miami and Eastman School of Music. He has toured with Maynard Ferguson and Buddy Rich. Matt currently is the co-director of Jazz Studies at California State University, Northridge, California. Matt adds this note, “I wrote what is often referred to as the Coltrane melody and chords. This distinctive melody and chord progression provides for a little more chromaticism in the melody and the harmony” Straighten Up and Fly Right

Composed in 1943, “Straighten Up and Fly Right” was originally performed by the Nat King Cole Trio

hitting number one on the Harlem Hit Parade. Nat King Cole used a sermon from his father as the basis for the lyrics in this piece.

Dave Wolpe has been composing and arranging since 1965. He has scored dozens arrangements for the Glenn Miller Orchestra. Over the years Dave has contributed arrangements to the orchestras of Ray Anthony, Lawrence Welk and Les Brown, to name a few.

Falling in love with Love

“Falling in Love with Love" is a show tune from the Rodgers and Hart musical The Boys from Syracuse, where it was introduced by Muriel Angelus. The musical premiered on Broadway in 1938. It was sung by Bernadette Peters as the stepmother in Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella (1997).

Dave Wolpe has been composing and arranging since 1965. He has scored dozens of arrangements for the Glenn Miller Orchestra. Over the years Dave has contributed arrangements to the orchestras of Ray Anthony, Lawrence Welk and Les Brown, to name a few. Love is Here to Stay

"Love Is Here to Stay" is a popular song and a jazz standard. The music was written by George Gershwin, the lyrics by Ira Gershwin, for the movie The Goldwyn Follies (1938) which was released shortly after George Gershwin's death. It is performed in the film by Kenny Baker. "Love Is Here to Stay" also appeared, perhaps most memorably, in the 1951 MGM picture An American in Paris, for which it served as the main theme. It also appeared in 1995's Forget Paris, in which it is actually a reference to An American In Paris. The song was the last composition George Gershwin completed. Ira Gershwin wrote the words after his brother's death. Vernon Duke wrote the music for the verse at the beginning of the song, also after George's death. Originally titled "It's Here to Stay" and then "Our Love Is Here to Stay", the song was finally published as "Love Is Here to Stay". Ira Gershwin has said that he wanted to change the song's name back to "Our Love Is Here to Stay" for years, but felt that it wouldn't be right since the song had already become a standard. The song is emblematic of the Great American Songbook, with both an introductory verse and a chorus. Arranger, Craig Skeffington has been a New England composer for the past 20 years. A high school band director for 15 years he is currently on the faculty of the University of Southern Maine Guest Artists MARK COLBY

Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1949, Mark comes from a musical background, as his father was a professional musician (drummer) who played with Benny Goodman for a time in the ‘40’s. At the age of eight, Mark was given a clarinet and lessons with a wonderful teacher by the name of Bill Schlagel. At age eleven, Mark took the next step in his evolution, saxophone, and thus began his life-long love affair. Immersed in the sounds of the big bands enjoyed by his father, intrigued by the more modern sounds of bebop, cool and hard-bop records his sister played around the house, his dedication to pursuing a life in music was cemented. In 1962, his family moved to Miami, Florida, where he began playing professionally at age 14. On Miami Beach, he had the opportunity to play shows with popular acts, including Tony Bennett, Sonny and Cher, Peggy Lee and Sammy Davis, Jr.,

with seasoned musicians. He was for many years the youngest guy on the bandstand, all the while pursuing his desire to play all styles of jazz. As a high school student, he studied with James Casale (co-author of Patterns

for Jazz with Jerry Coker.) After high school, Mark attended the University of Miami, enrolling in Jerry Coker’s Jazz Studies program. Studying with Jerry and pianist Vince Maggio had a profound effect on him, as did sitting in with Ira Sullivan since the age of 16. These master musicians provided him inspiration and encouragement, as well as invaluable education in the jazz idiom. Mark was fortunate to have had the incredible experience of working with legendary baritone sax player Gerry Mulligan while he was artist in residence. While in college, he recorded with the likes of Dr. John, Wilson Pickett, Bill Wyman of the Rolling Stones, and the Bee Gees. After

Page 7: Harold L. Richards High School Jazz Ensemble Illinois Music ...

graduating with a Master’s Degree in Jazz Studies, he received a call from Maynard Ferguson inviting him to join his band in New York. After three albums and three years touring as featured soloist and musical director with Maynard, Bob James beckoned, and he became of member of the “James gang.” Bob signed Mark to Columbia Records, beginning his solo recording career. “Serpentine Fire” and “One Good Turn” both sold very well, while he toured for the next six years as a featured member of Bob James’ band. Mark’s tours with Maynard and Bob found him playing jazz festivals and concert halls around the world. In 1980, Mark moved to Chicago, with its very active music scene. Mark was immediately participating in a recording market that was exploding. Jingles, record dates, and jazz gigs were plentiful. In 1983, he was approached by DePaul University to assume a teaching position as jazz saxophone instructor. In 1998 he joined the faculty at Elmhurst College. In the ensuing years, he has played and in some cases toured with such varied luminaries as Frank Sinatra, Jaco Pastorius, Mose Allison, Joe Williams and Charlie Haden. Currently he is performing as a guest soloist and clinician/adjudicator at middle schools, high schools and colleges throughout the United States and Europe, representing Selmer Paris Saxophones and Vandoren reeds. In 2001, he performed Duke Ellington’s version of “The Nutcracker Suite” with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and in 2008 performed Leonard Bernstein’s “Prelude, Fugue and Riffs.” In 1999, Hallway Records released “Reunion” (with Vince Maggio) followed by “Tenor Reference” in 2002, to glowing reviews and appreciative audiences. His last release on Hallway Records was a tribute to Stan Getz entitled Speaking of Stan, which was released in 2006 and went to #3 on the jazz radio charts. In 2010 Mark was the artist in residence at the Three Rivers Saxophone Symposium in PA. Mark appeared in a cameo with Diana Krall in the Johnny Depp movie “Public Enemies,” released in July 2009. His CD on Origin Records, “Reflections” was released in November 2008 featuring Phil Woods as special guest. In 2010 Mark was one of the people interviewed with his own chapter in Cicily Janus’s book entitled “The New Faces of Jazz” published by Billboard Press. In 2011 he released “Yesterdays Gardenias” on his own label, RCI records. Currently he is completing a new recording to be released in 2016 KIRK GARRISON
