The Tokyo String Quartet is joined by pianist Jon Nakamatsu and clarinettist Jon Manasse in these Brahms masterpieces dating from two very different periods in his life: the tumultuous Piano Quintet, Op.34 – the work of an ambitious young man – and the Clarinet Quintet, Op.115, an autumnal serenade by an experienced master. The journey between these two milestones was one marked by criticism, soul searching and ultimately, triumph.

The fall season gets off to a fantastic start with this month’s strong selection of new releases. At the top of the list is René Jacobs’ latest foray into the operas of Mozart for harmonia mundi. Written when the composer was only 18, La finta giardiniera sparkles under the baton of Maestro Jacobs (p.11). The Choir of Clare College, Cambridge débuts on the label with an album of choral music by Imogen Holst, daughter of composer Gustav Holst (p.13). Other key releases from harmonia mundi include Paul Lewis playing Schubert (p.12), Maurice Steger’s recital of music from Naples (p.10) and Jirí Belohlávek conducting Smetana (p.9). Hyperion’s October highlights include Alina Ibragimova playing Mendelssohn (p.15), Angela Hewitt’s Debussy recital (p.17), Schumann lieder with Gerald Finley (p.18) and Christmas favorites by Britten with Stephen Layton (p.19). The holiday theme continues as the Choir of King’s College, Cambridge launches their own new label with a recording of the beloved Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols (p.21). Other key classical releases include The Tallis Scholars’ new release of music by Mouton (p.7), Valery Gergiev conducting Tchaikovsky’s first three symphonies (p.23) and Anne Schwanewilms singing late-Romantic lieder (p.25). Non-classical priorities include the début of Philippe Petrucciani on Jazz Village (p.32), a new album from the Malian desert blues band Terakaft (p.37) and the long-awaited release Cinema El Mundo from the veteran French band Lo’Jo (p.41).

IMPORTIrene Scharrer, though perhaps the least remembered of the major Matthay pupils, was the earliest to record, beginning in 1909 at the age of 21. She excelled in such works as the Chopin Études and in other brilliant pieces such as those by Scarlatti and Liszt, but the poise and refinement of her Chopin Nocturne reveal another side to her playing that is sadly underrepresented on disc. Her final recording, of the Litolff Scherzo, was also her most famous; in its day it was a best seller and was responsible for putting that work on the musical map. This set reissues for the first time all Scharrer’s electrical recordings and examples of every work she recorded in the acoustic era (pre 1925).

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDPianist Paolo Giacometti presents a fascinating new recording of music by Maurice Ravel played on both modern and authentic instruments. Although trained on modern pianos, Giacometti has long been a proponent of period keyboards. Giacometti’s desire to share the interpretive revelations he gained from playing these pianos was the inspiration for this unique project, which features Ravel’s Sonatine, Gaspard de la Nuit, Menuet antique and Le Tombeau de Couperin. The new instrument used for the recording is a Steinway and the authentic instrument is an Érard — one of the most celebrated makers of the nineteenth century. Ravel frequently gave his recitals on a Steinway, while at home he used an Érard when composing.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDFollowing on the success of their 2011 release Nordic Sounds, Peter Dijkstra and the Swedish Radio Choir return with a second volume in the series, this time focusing on the use of traditional Swedish folk songs in contemporary choral music. The disc’s repertoire ranges from Jan Sandström’s arrangements of improvised folk songs of the Sami people — whose singing is among the earliest continuing vocal traditions of Europe — to recent works such as the sixteen-part Kosijat by Jaakko Mäntyjärvi, one of the best-known contemporary composers in Finland. The disc concludes with Anders Hillborg’s twelve-minute Muoayiayaoum which explores a phonetic sequence of vowels that open and close. The level of vocal virtuosity that Dijkstra elicits from his singers is breathtaking and the choir’s performances are a lesson in vocal precision.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDWidely acclaimed for their recordings of English Renaissance and German Romantic choral music as well as twentieth-century works from France, The Gents now venture across the ocean to the new world with a CD that takes them to the bright lights of Broadway. Jetse Bremer has specially arranged a selection of compositions by George Gershwin for soprano soloist, choir and instruments that takes full advantage of the vocal flexibility and homogeneous sound of The Gents. Soprano soloist Johannette Zomer lends an element of classical flavor to the program, creating a blend that balances Gershwin’s wide-ranging musical inspirations to perfection.

IMPORTWhen Ta l l i s S cho l a r s conductor Peter Phillips discovered the music of Jean Mouton, he was struck by the composer’s unique musical language. Mouton was employed for most of his life at the French courts. His compositions underpin an incredible lyricism and sweetness of tone with music of the utmost in mathematical complexity. This combination was almost unparalleled and led Mouton to be routinely compared with Josquin in his lifetime. The most substantial work on the CD is Mouton’s Missa Dictes moy toutes voz pensées. This piece stands out from the composers’ other fourteen masses by having an Agnus Dei scored for three basses alone. There is no other music from the Renaissance period that we know of that was scored this way. The disc also includes the motet Quis dabit oculis, written as a funeral motet for his patron Queen Anne of Brittany and a work that stands out for its simplicity.

IMPORTAlthough for nearly 150 years Bedrich Smetana’s The Bartered Bride has triumphed in opera houses all over the world, the work’s road to success was not an easy one. The opera was categorically rejected at its 1866 premiere by a Czech public clamoring for a genuine national opera. Four versions of the work later, after addressing many critical complaints (sometimes it was found too long, sometimes too short), a final version was completed and premiered in 1870. The musical world quickly recognized that Smetana had produced work that was destined for immortality. This recording features an all-Czech cast accompanied by the BBC Symphony Orchestra and BBC Symphony Chorus led by Jirí Belohlávek.

IMPORTAmong the many pilgrims who journeyed to Naples in the ‘holy year’ of 1725 was a certain Johann Joachim Quantz, who would later become the most famous flautist of his time thanks to his patron Frederick the Great. Quantz’s

visit to the city coincided with a burst of musical creativity. Works premiered in that year included sonatas and concertos composed by the great Alessandro Scarlatti and a host of works by his talented contemporaries and successors. On this recording, recorder virtuoso Maurice Steger brings a selection of these musical treasures back to life, drawing on a Neapolitan manuscript collection dating from 1725. The performers accompanying him on the recording include some of the leading specialists in music of the period, and the bonus DVD offered with the CD features musical commentary and performances from the recording sessions.

“Maurice Steger could disarm the most recorder-adverse listener with a single phrase. He combines a startling level of technical bravura with an ability to breathe sincerity and purpose

into even the most floridly decorative phrase.”— THE BALTIMORE SUN

IMPORTFollowing on the remarkable and unprecedented success of his recordings of Die Zauberflöte, Idomeneo, La Clemenza di Tito and the three Da Ponte operas, conductor René Jacobs leads an all-star cast in a performance of Mozart’s La finta giardiniera, written in 1774 when the composer was only eighteen. Always an iconoclast, Jacobs chose to use a posthumous version of the score dating from 1796. Discovered in the music library of Count Heinrich Wilhelm Haugwitz in the Czech town of Náměšť nad Oslavou, the score includes additional wind parts and displays skillful re-orchestration. While the arranger’s name remains a mystery, in view of the score’s elegance and sensitivity, scholars agree he was a connoisseur of Mozart’s style. Jacobs’ strong cast stars British tenor Jeremy Ovenden as Count Belfiore and soprano Alexandrina Pendatchanska (aka Alex Penda) as the vengeful Arminda.

“René Jacobs’ Mozart opera recordings are among the most hotly discussed classical sets of recent years. Revelations are everywhere.”

His fifth release in the series, this set features the great A minor Piano Sonata D.845, the Impromptus D.935, the Moments Musicaux D.780, the Allegretto D915 and the always-popular Wanderer Fantasy D.760. IMPORTBritish composer Imogen Holst (1907-1984) was the only child of Gustav Holst. She was brought up in London and educated at the St. Paul’s Girls’ School, where her father was director of music. She studied composition with George Dyson and Gordon Jacob and harmony and counterpoint with Ralph Vaughan Williams at the Royal College of Music. In the autumn of 1952, Benjamin Britten invited Holst to come to Aldeburgh to help with his opera Gloriana. She stayed in Aldeburgh for the rest of her life, working as Britten’s assistant for twelve years and artistic director for the Aldeburgh Festival from 1956 to 1977. Languishing in the shadow of both her father and Benjamin Britten, Holst’s own compositions have not received the recognition they deserve. Graham Ross conducts the Choir of Clare College, Cambridge and the instrumentalists of The Dmitri Ensemble in these world première recordings of a selection of Holst’s choral works ranging from 1927 to 1972, three of which have not been heard since their first performance. Also included is the first recording of her imaginative and skillful orchestration of Benjamin Britten’s cantata Rejoice in the Lamb, made at Britten’s own request.

IMPORTIf one believes an anecdote from the early 1790s, it was with his oratorio Die Schöpfung that Haydn, in the autumn of his years, hoped to perpetuate his fame for posterity — even though he was already the most celebrated composer in Europe. Not surprisingly, the work’s first public performance in 1799 was a huge triumph. This glorious live recording from 1986 features Maestro Zubin Mehta leading the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra in a decidedly old fashioned reading of this majestic score, eschewing the authentic performance practice approach in favor of a more romantic and lyrical sound.

IMPORTThe young violinist Alina Ibrag imova i s a l ready established as an admired recording artist, standing alongside great artists of the past and present with her versions of Bach and Beethoven’s violin works. She appears on this latest release with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and Vladimir Jurowski (in his Hyperion premiere) in a program which includes a classic of the concerto repertoire — Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor. Ibragimova’s is a glittering, knife-edge performance, her playing a portrayal in itself of the music’s passion held in control through exquisite craft. The Violin Concerto in D minor — an unusual and welcome pairing — is an early work, written when the composer was only thirteen. As with Mendelssohn’s other juvenile works it is extraordinarily accomplished and exceedingly charming.

“Alina Ibragimova is a player of great musical imagination and intelligence and this - combined with superb technique - produces some exceptional results…”

IMPORTAndrew Carwood and the Cardinall’s Musick have recorded the complete Latin church music of William Byrd, the final volume of which won a Gramophone Record of the Year award. Now they turn to Byrd’s English church music, a genre that shows the composer treading a path between his Catholicism and the requirements of the reformed Church of England. But far from sublimating Byrd’s genius, this difficult situation gave rise to one of his most fertile periods. Written for ten voices, the Great Service is gorgeously lavish and grand — very different to the simple, unmelismatic style demanded by the Anglican clerics.

IMPORTCellist Steven Isserlis, one of Britain’s best-loved instrumentalists, joins forces with composer and pianist Thomas Adès for an intriguing recital of chamber music. The program includes three of Liszt’s arrangements for cello and piano, Janácek’s Pohádka and Fauré’s passionate Cello Sonata No.2. The mystery and sadness of Kurtág’s four miniatures for cello and piano lead the listener into the 21st century and to the title track of this disc, which Adès wrote especially for Isserlis. Lieux retrouvés is a characteristically thrilling tour-de-force, displaying influences from all the composers previously featured and many more.

IMPORTAngela Hewitt’s previous forays into the French repertoire have been praised for their tenderness, Gallic wit, verve, and — the most important ingredient of all — charm. These qualities are very much to the fore in this new disc of music by Claude Debussy featuring some of the composer’s most sunlit, delightful and popular works. Children’s Corner was written for Debussy’s beloved daughter (though not, as Hewitt explains, for her to play immediately). Hewitt embraces the music’s humor, artful references and gentle beauty. The atmospheric Suite bergamasque includes the famous “Clair de lune.” Also included are the tragic Masques and gorgeously exuberant L’isle joyeuse. Hewitt and Debussy are a perfect match.

“Hewitt’s enviably proficient technique and musicianship are complemented by a rare vividness and romantic empathy.”

IMPORTGerald Finley and Julius Drake return to Schumann, following a magisterially intense Dichterliebe which won them a third Gramophone award. Here they focus on the two contrasting Liederkreis (song-circle) cycles based upon texts by Heine and Eichendorff. Heine’s poetry in Schumann’s Op.24 contains extremes of elation and despair that call all of Finley’s considerable dramatic powers into play. Eichendorff ’s seductive, crepuscular ‘night-songs’ of Op.39 require the velvety tone for which this singer is equally revered. Separating these two great works are the Sechs Gedichte aus dem Liederbuch eines Malers, which find Schumann in more homespun, folksong-influenced vein.

IMPORTStephen Layton leads the Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge and the Holst Singers in two of Benjamin Britten’s most popular choral works for Christmastide. The cantata Saint Nicolas tells the story of the original Santa Claus, a fourth-century saint whose altruistic acts led to his canonization as patron saint of children and sailors. Britten’s lively setting is distinctly operatic, full of atmosphere and color. The part of Nicolas (here sung magnificently by Allan Clayton, already acclaimed as the heir to Peter Pears and Anthony Rolfe Johnson) is one of Britten’s great heroic tenor roles. A Ceremony of Carols is a setting for treble voices and harp of some of the Medieval texts that Britten loved so much, and is heard every Christmas in cathedrals, churches and concert halls throughout the world. This fresh, sparkling performance completes a thoroughly festive release.

The term con molti istromenti (Vivaldi’s own) refers not so much to the literal number of instruments involved as to their variety and unusual deployment. For an Italian concerto of the period to use wind instruments at all would be unusual; Vivaldi combines recorders, oboes, chalumeaux, horns and bassoons alongside a wide-ranging complement of strings, itself including viole all’inglese and the even more obscure violins in tromba marina.

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDIMPORTTchaikovsky’s early trio of symphonies have long lived in the shadow of the three that followed. Following his acclaimed Mariinsky DVD of the final three symphonies, Valery Gergiev conducts outstanding performances of these early works with the London Symphony Orchestra. Tchaikovsky’s early symphonies are full of rich expressive melodies — something for which he had a natural talent. They contain influences of Russian nationalism and folk tunes, particularly in the second (Little Russian) and the first (Winter Dreams), which hints at a Russian landscape. The choreographer George Balanchine exploited the dance-like nature of the third by using it as the basis for the final part of his ballet masterpiece, Jewels. Gergiev will visit the USA in October with the Mariinsky Orchestra and conduct gala performances with the World Orchestra for Peace in New York and Chicago.

IMPORTS c h u m a n n ’ s P i a n o Quintet was one of the earliest examples of the combination of piano with a string quartet. It instantly became one of Schumann’s most popular works. It was composed at a time of almost feverish industry — along with the quintet, he composed his three String Quartets Op.41, the Piano Quartet and a set of Fantasy Pieces for piano trio, all in 1842. Dvorák’s Op.81 Piano Quintet stems from his attempt to revise an earlier work in A major from 1872. Dissatisfied with the earlier version, he set upon composing a new one — the result composed in September 1887 is one of his most beloved works. Jonathan Biss is one of the most exciting pianists of the younger generation, widely regarded for his artistry and deeply felt interpretations. Formed in 1998 at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, the Elias String Quartet have quickly established themselves as one of the most intense and vibrant quartets of their generation.

IMPORTOne of Rossini’s rarest scores, the dramma serio Aureliano in Palmira was written during his miraculous 21st year (1813), when Rossini produced four operas in all. On the way to the opera’s inevitable happy ending, there is plenty of extreme emotion to fire-up some exciting vocal writing. A great success in its day, Aureliano promises to thrill another generation of listeners in this new studio recording under Maurizio Benini. The set includes a lavishly illustrated book including a complete libretto with an English translation by Jeremy Commons and a synopsis by Richard Osborne.

DOMESTICMusic Di rec to r Nichola s McGegan and Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra bring to life the depth and brilliance of

Brahms’ two orchestral Serenades on this disc, recorded live at First Congregational Church, Berkeley, California. In the late 1850s, Brahms took on the post of choral director at the court of Lippe-Detmold. The position provided him access to an orchestra, and Brahms took full advantage of his good fortune. The two orchestral Serenades were the great composer’s first efforts in the genre, and in the tradition of Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert, they are light-hearted, lyrical and sunny. The second is notable for scoring that excludes violins. In both works, color, charm, wit (and a nod to Classical formal traditions) are present in abundance.

“McGegan’s 25-year nurturing of the San Francisco-based period-instrument Philharmonia Baroque is evident in the crisp ensemble and subtle dynamic shadings…”

Gypsy jazz guitarist Mayo Hubert is probably best known for accompanying Tchavolo Schmitt. What is less known, however, is that he is also a formidable soloist. Hubert’s Caravan de Santino is an album full of red-hot playing and the very best of Manouche style. Hubert is joined by Laurent Maur on harmonica, an instrument not often heard in Gypsy jazz. Jazz pianist Patrick Favre began his professional career in 1989 performing with bassist Louis Petrucciani and saxophonist Charles Tyler. His latest release, Origines offers a selection of nine originals in which Favre tells the story of his life in a kind of musical fresco. The multitalented Cesarius Alvim’s album Contrapunctus presents a selection of duos for bass and piano where Alvim plays both parts. Alvim’s recent albums for Frémeaux have featured Alvim playing both piano and bass, paired with such stars as Eddie Gomez and Eric Le Lann.

IMPORTFile in: Pop - RockThe band Sundog, consisting of Arthur Jeffes of Penguin Cafe on piano and Oli Langford on violin, is based around and elaborates on the ideas first aired in some of the tracks on Penguin Cafe’s 2011 album A Matter Of Life. On Sundog’s début album Insofar, mathematically intricate and precise rhythms thrown against warm and emotive melody create a direct and striking intensity. Jeffes is working towards the idea of transparent music that can be both intellectually satisfying and quietly touching, music which, because of its origin, can work happily under any number of names: classical, minimalist, chamber, or electronica. Combining Langford’s virtuoso violin-playing and Jeffes’ extended techniques on the piano and Rhodes to get as many different textures as possible, Sundog creates electro from real sounds; building up epic cinematic landscapes using only real instruments, electrical circuitry and amplification.

IMPORTFile in: R & BAn eight-strong soul group whose roots lay in the Washington DC area, Father’s Children released

just one album, their eponymously titled debut, recorded for the Mercury label in late 1978. Produced by The Crusaders’ Wayne Henderson, for these sessions he augmented Father’s Children’s line-up with, among others, Bobby ‘The Genie’ Lyle (synths) and backup vocalists Augie ‘AJ’ Johnson, Gregory Matta and Miki Howard from the Henderson-produced group Side Effect. The album that resulted really is the definition of the term “rare groove.” Overlooked at the time of its original release in 1979, it later became a cult classic on the underground soul circuit thanks to its high steppin’ rhythms, tight, funky arrangements and, of course, Father’s Children’s gorgeous gospel-influenced vocal harmonies. Dutton’s CD reissue includes two bonus tracks culled from the group’s Mercury single of July 1979.

IMPORTFile in: World / Africa / MaliIn the language of the Sahara the name of the group Terakaft, founded in Mali in 2001, means caravan and Kel Tamashek refers to those who speak Tamashek, referring to the Tuareg people. Electric riffs swirl, twirl and prance through these songs that, far from stereotypical clichés, recount the story of an authentic people. British guitarist and producer Justin Adams captures the trance-like motion that feeds Terakaft’s blues soaked desert-rock, music that is also the hallmark of Africa’s last remaining nomads.

IMPORTFile in: World / Africa / GuineaBorn in 1964, Sékouba “Bambino” Diabaté is a leading light of Guinean music. Diabaté won the Best Guinean Singer Award in 1979 and was asked to join Bembeya Jazz. The nickname Bambino came from his need to distinguish himself from Sékou Bembeya Diabaté, the group’s guitar virtuoso. After embarking on a solo career, Diabaté had his first major success with his 1992 album Le Destin. With Innovation, Diabaté’s life experiences and wide ranging influences come together in a dance-friendly album that never forsakes his roots

IMPORTFile in: World / Africa / SenegalFor the last few years, Diabel Cissokho has played in his family’s band Bannaya and alongside some of Africa’s greatest talents. Now his time has come, and Cissokho presents Kanabory Siyama (Don’t run from your ethnicity), recorded with a cast of superb musicians in Dakar and London. With a soulful sound of mesmeric Manding melodies, rooted in the musical traditions of Senegal and Mali, Cissokho’s original songs express his thoughts on life, family and the hardships and afflictions suffered across the world. Producer Justin Adams described his music as, “Groove, melody and soul, and those voices hitting you like an Atlantic wave, it’s irresistible.”

IMPORTFile in: World / AfricaAt 4,130 miles, the Nile is the longest river in the world. It runs through ten countries as it wends its way from Lake Victoria to the Mediterranean sea. Water, the source of life, is also the lifeblood of human civilization. The music that emerged from the many countries through which the Nile courses echoes the rich diversity of the diverse cultures that developed. This fascinating, lavishly illustrated and informative set offers an overview of the musical life of this region. Over 22 tracks, it finds connections and contrasts between Western-influenced urban, modern traditionalist and folkloric styles — all of which have vibrant exponents in today’s Africa.

IMPORTFile in: World / Caribbean / MartiniqueLoulou Boislaville (1919-2001) was a musical legend from the island of Martinique, a French territory in the Caribbean. As part of his work on behalf of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, he led the Grands Ballets Martinique and the Groupe Folklorique Martiniquais. These two groups served a dual purpose of helping to preserve the island’s rich traditional heritage as well as promoting tourism. Boislaville’s long and rich musical career included numerous appearances in movies, films and television. This collection of recordings from 1967-1973 features Boislaville leading the Groupe Folklorique Martiniquais in a selection of eighteen tracks of traditional Caribbean music.

WORLD

IMPORTFile in: World / Europe / FranceThe remarkable young a-capella French vocal quintet Têtes de chiens combines techniques inherited from classical music with a deep understanding of the long history and many flavors of traditional music in France. Their fifteen songs on their first album, Portraits d’homme, deal with balancing tradition and modernity. The music’s amalgam of old and new is rich, witty and virtuosic — spanning styles from classical polyphony to urban trance.

IMPORTFile in: World / Europe / RussiaAfter two previous volumes devoted to historic recordings by the Red Army Choir, this new set continues to explore the annals of Russian popular, military and traditional music. Once again, the listener is captured by the vocal power of the Choir’s 120 singers, whose patriotic songs — the emblems of eternal Russia — carry us to the shores of the Volga and sing the praises of brave Cossack horsemen.

Cinema El Mundo is a motion picture performance of life — a unique and memorable production with subtle sound engineering by Jean Lamoot who captures the glow of the melodies, the warmth of the rhythms and the tenderness of the lyrics, both profound and poetic. Guest artists on the album include Robert Wyatt, Vincent Segal, and Ibrahim Ag Alhabib from Tinariwen.

SONGLINES: TOP OF THE WORLD

“Lo’Jo have created a unique, instantly recognizable sonic

signature by absorbing a myriad of influences... none of their songs are formulaic, yet there’s no self-conscious striving to make each one different either. Even an

average Lo’Jo album shimmers with atmosphere

and originality - and this one is no exception.”
