David Bates leads La Nuova Musica in a pair of contrasting settings of Psalm 109. Handel’s masterful and ambitious HWV 282 was penned in 1707 during a visit to Italy. Vivaldi’s vivid and economical RV 807 (his third Dixit Dominus) was long mistakenly attributed to Baldassare Galuppi; it probably dates from the early 1730s. Rounding out the program is Vivaldi’s dazzling motet In furore iustissimae irae, featuring soprano Lucy Crowe.

Ludovico Einaudi is a worldwide phenomenon. His hypnotizing compositional style crosses genres in a unique way that appeals to an incredibly diverse audience. This month Einaudi presents In A Time Lapse (p.27), a new album that recalls the breathtaking beauty of his bestselling 2008 release Divenire. Maestro René Jacobs returns to Pergolesi with a world première recording for harmonia mundi of the composer’s recently authenticated Septem verba a Christo (p.5). Also on harmonia mundi, pianist Gloria Cheng is joined by the Calder Quartet for a disc of music by Messiaen and Saariaho (p.7) and harpsichordist Andreas Staier offers a themed program entitled Pour passer la mélancolie (p.6). Hyperion’s top releases for March include Bach’s St. John Passion with Stephen Layton and Polyphony (p.13) and the latest volume in the Romantic Violin Concerto series featuring violinist Chloë Hanslip (p.15). Sir Colin Davis completes his survey of works by Berlioz with this month’s LSO Live release of the composer’s monumental Grande Messe des morts (p.19). Rounding out this month’s classical priorities are Jordi Savall’s tribute to Erasmus (p.3) and the second volume in Onyx’s Beethoven sonata cycle with Jonathan Biss (p.23). The month’s top non-classical releases focus on jazz. Discograph joins our family of labels with new releases by Lionel Belmondo and Eric Legnini (p.31), Kyle Eastwood débuts on Jazz Village with The View From Here (p.32) and Gilad Atzmon returns with Songs of the Metropolis on World Village (p.33).

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDWith this CD-book, Jordi Savall pays tribute to Erasmus, one of the most fascinating historical figures of the Renaissance. Erasmus of Rotterdam was a Dutch Renaissance humanist, Catholic priest, social critic, teacher and theologian. An early proponent of religious tolerance, Erasmus’s words provided a catalyst for the Reformation; but while he was critical of the abuses within the Church and called for reform, he kept his distance from Martin Luther and continued to recognize the authority of the pope. This three-disc collection pairs the words of Erasmus with music of the period. Disc one alternates excerpts from his essay The Praise of Folly with variations on the theme of La Folia. Discs two and three feature new recordings of music from the period interspersed with texts by Erasmus and Luther. Discs four through six include the musical selections from discs 1-3 without the spoken texts. In keeping with Erasmus’s concept of a reconciled Europe, the album includes a code to download the spoken texts in English, German, Dutch, Italian, Spanish and Catalan.

IMPORTThe history of the oratorio Septem verba a Christo in cruce moriente prolata is as shrouded in mystery as its probable creator. The title of the work and the assertion of Pergolesi’s authorship have haunted musicological circles for a century or so, initially on the sole basis of an incomplete manuscript catalogued in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek since 1882 and regarded there as genuine. The recent discovery of two more manuscripts in the abbeys of Kremsmünster and Aldersbach by musicologist Reinhard Fehling settled the issue of authenticity once and for all and Pergolesi’s lost masterpiece was given its concert première at the Beaune Festival in July 2012 and recorded shortly after by the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin led by René Jacobs. Featured soloists include soprano Sophie Karthäuser, counter-tenor Christophe Dumaux, tenor Julian Behr and bass-baritone Konstantin Wolff.
“In no other group is such a uniformly high level of individual virtuosity fused into such a powerful communal sound.”

IMPORTKeyboard virtuoso Andreas Staier presents Pour passer la mélancolie (to pass the melancholy) , a unique program of French Baroque
harpsichord music. The works presented here are not simply compositions in deeply sorrowful or expressive registers, but also discourses in sound on vanity, art and music itself. Whether the composer luxuriates in melancholic disorder or attempts to remedy it, there is but a fine line here between the vanity of the world and the artist’s glory. In his readings of Froberger, Fischer and Clérambault, Staier distills the fruits of this sophisticated aesthetic blend.

IMPORTFrom the late 19th century onwards, following in the wake of Goya, Spain experienced a creative explosion that was to manifest itself in all the arts, including music. ¡España!, a specially-priced five disc set, presents a selection of the rich music of Spanish composers who probed the innermost depths of their country’s soul. Many of their works were influenced by developments elsewhere in Europe — hence the presence here of Ravel, the most Spanish of French musicians, alongside de Falla, Albéniz, Rodrigo, and Mompou. Featured artists on this comprehensive collection, which ranges from opera to chamber music, include pianist Javier Perianes, guitarist Marco Socías and the Orquesta Ciudad de Granada led by Josep Pons.

IMPORTThe oratorio Joram was one of the last works composed by Paul Ben-Haim, then Paul Frankenburger, in his native city of Munich. He completed the work in 1933, only a few weeks before he emigrated to Palestine to escape the Nazis. In April 2012, nearly eighty years after its composition, it received its Israeli premiere at Tel Aviv University’s Smolarz Auditorium. Its turbulent yet ultimately optimistic libretto is taken from Rudolf Borchardt’s poetic work Das Buch Joram (1907) which describes a suffering, Job-like character using semi-biblical imagery. Its musical language displays influences of German late Romanticism and Expressionism. This world première recording from the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Hayko Siemens honors one of the founders and greatest composers of Israeli music.

IMPORTThis recording, which celebrates the acclaimed conductor Kurt Masur’s 85th birthday, was recorded live at the Smolarz Auditorium at Tel Aviv University. The program, performed here by the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of one of the great Beethoven conductors of our time, includes the rarely recorded complete incidental music to Egmont, Beethoven’s homage to a 16th century hero who fought against oppression. Masur’s chosen pairing is the sublime Symphony No.7.
IMPORTAsher Fisch directs the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra in an exciting rendition of Rossini’s Stabat Mater. Combining both sacred and profane music, this choral masterpiece is endowed with a human dimension that is often lacking in distinctly religious works. Recorded live at Tel Aviv University’s Smolarz Auditorium in June 2012, the recording’s terrific cast includes soprano Serena Farnocchia, mezzo-soprano Ronat Shaham, tenor Cosmin Ifrim and bass Simon Orfila.

IMPORTStephen Layton leads the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and his own superb choral ensemble Polyphony in a powerful performance of Bach’s most dramatic masterpiece, the St. John Passion. Joined by a starry team of soloists, Layton directs a particularly vivid account of the work, the excitement of the narrative drama contrasting with heartbreaking moments of reflection. In Ian Bostridge, we have the most iconic Evangelist of the last twenty years. Bostridge is an incomparable communicator, a singer of technical brilliance and an impassioned, experienced interpreter of Bach’s music.

IMPORTHoward Shelley is an acknowledged expert in the area of early Romantic piano music. With this disc, Shelley presents the first installment of a six-volume set of Mendelssohn’s complete solo piano music — perhaps the least well-known part of the composer’s repertoire. Mendelssohn composed or began nearly two hundred works for piano. However, only about seventy were published during his lifetime. They range from the Op.5 Capriccio, written in 1825, to the sixth volume of the Lieder ohne Worte Op.67, written in 1845. Some twenty-five additional pieces have been published posthumously. The remainder, whether fully drafted or fragmentary, were left to his musical estate or have disappeared. This first volume in Shelley’s series includes Opp. 5, 6, and 7 and the first volume of his Lieder ohne Worte.

IMPORTThe la tes t re lease in Hyper ion’s acc l a imed Romantic Violin Concerto series features the brilliant young English violinist Chloë Hanslip, who once again displays her usual insouciant virtuosity and obvious delight in this repertoire. Glazunov’s Violin Concerto, written for Leopold Auer, is a masterpiece of violin writing, including a brilliantly effective cadenza by the composer himself. Swiss composer Othmar Schoek is probably best known for his Lieder, but his Concerto quasi una fantasia in B flat major, Op 21 for violin and full orchestra, included here, is his most substantial concert work. The lyric passion and attractiveness of the work’s ideas earn it a distinguished place among the violin concertos of the immediate pre-World War I period. Hanslip is accompanied by the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana led by Alexander Vedernikov.

IMPORTThe Royal String Quartet, a wonderful young Polish ensemble, continues its exploration of the string quartet repertoire of its homeland with this album of music by two giants of the twentieth century. Witold Lutoslawski, whose centenary is celebrated in 2013, wrote his one and only string quartet in 1964 and it has since maintained an eminent position in the international repertoire. Krzysztof Penderecki (born 1933) was the most talked-about Polish composer in the early 1960s and remains an important presence in contemporary music. His three string quartets (1960, 1968 and 2008) are key works in the history of the post-war Polish quartet.

IMPORTEnglish composer Peter Philips spent most of his life abroad and was celebrated all over Europe in his day. Despite this, Philips’s music has been neglected since his death in 1628. Of his immense output of vocal music, to this day most people know only a handful of motets from the five-voice Cantiones sacrae (1612). This recording featuring half of the companion volume of eight-voice motets seeks to remedy that situation. These triumphant and highly Italianate settings are performed by Rupert Gough leading The Choir of Royal Holloway. They are joined by The English Cornett and Sackbut Ensemble, who have gilded so many choral recordings of the music of Gabrieli and Monteverdi in the past.

Hearing Joachim play left a deep impression on Stanford and as a result of these formative experiences, Stanford became a devotee of chamber music. The pieces here, performed with delicacy on this reissue by Paul Barritt and Catherine Edwards offer an overview of the music Stanford wrote for violin and piano.
IMPORTPreviously Available as CDA 67567 (034571175676) Deleted October 2010This mid-priced reissue featuring the Wells Cathedral Choir conducted by Matthew Owens offers a selection of evocative and accessible choral works by English composer Geoffrey Burgon. Television credits for Burgon include the music for Brideshead Revisited and the BBC’s adaptation of John le Carré’s Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. But commercial success should not prevent us from recognizing and appreciating Burgon’s depth of invention and mastery of formal conception, firmly rooted in the classical tradition, and particularly that of the Anglican Church.

IMPORTSurveying music from Jacob Van Eyck to Claudio Monteverdi (by way of a few anonymous composers of the fourteenth century) this live recording from La Sainte-Chapelle in Paris from the Barok Ensemble explores the wide variety and amazing inventiveness of dance music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. On this uplifting release, Brazilian soprano Luanda Siqueira joins the ensemble, which includes Charles Limouse (flute and percussion), Gilles Harlé (harpsichord and percussion), David Braccini (violin and percussion) and Marjolaine Cambon (viola da gamba). The album’s cover art is a detail of the one of the glorious Medieval stained-glass windows of the Sainte-Chapelle.
IMPORTLoreley presents award-winning guitarist Emmanuel Rossfelder in an album of works for guitar and orchestra by Joaquín Rodrigo. The Concierto de Aranjuez, far and away Rodrigo’s best-known work, was inspired by the gardens at Palacio Real de Aranjuez, built by Philip II in the16th century. The concerto is paired with the Fantasía para un gentilhombre, written in 1954 for the guitarist Andrés Segovia and based on themes by 17th century Spanish composer Gaspar Sanz. In both works, Rossfelder is accompanied by the Orchestre d’Auvergne under the baton of Arie Van Beek.

IMPORTFrom the wit of Satie to the poetry of Debussy, French music of the early decades of the twentieth century was created by exceptional and imaginative minds capable of grasping delicate nuances and shining infinite variations of light on the natural world and the human soul. Renowned for her diverse repertoire and impressive discography, French pianist Anne Queffélec has a special affinity for this repertoire. On this delightful collection from Mirare, Queffélec leads us down the varied and colorful pathways of some of the most fascinating French music for piano ever written.
IMPORTOn this recording from Mirare, French violinist Deborah Nemtanu is partnered with acclaimed Austrian conductor (and fellow violinist) Thomas Zehetmair in an album of music by Saint-Saëns and Fauré. The disc explores Nemtanu’s skills both as a soloist and as leader of the Orchestre de Chambre de Paris. The program features an orchestral masterwork by Fauré, the suite from Pelléas et Mélisande, framed by Nemtanu’s brilliant readings of works for violin and orchestra by both composers. This disc marks Zehetmair’s début recording as principal conductor of the Orchestre de Chambre de Paris.

IMPORTFranck’s passionate and sunny Violin Sonata has long been regarded as one of the greatest in the repertoire, and is the work of a composer at the height of his powers. Richard Strauss’s Violin Sonata, composed a year after Franck’s in 1887, is the work of a young composer on the cusp of discovering his mature voice; lyrical and sumptuous, it has all the hallmarks of his later style. Performed here by violinist Augustin Dumay and French-Canadian pianist Louis Lortie, this recording marks the duo’s recording debut.
IMPORTWinner of the Group Edmond de Rothschild award at the 2012 Sommets Musicaux de Gstaad, Korean violinist Soo-Hyun Park makes her recording debut with this program of virtuoso works for violin and orchestra by Wieniawski, Conus and Vieuxtemps. IMPORTChopin is quoted as having said, “When I feel in good form and strong enough to find my own individual sound, then I need a Pleyel piano,” as well as, “Pleyel pianos are the last word in perfection.” On this recording, master pianist Yuan Sheng performs on a superb 1845 Pleyel grand piano from the Frederick Historical Piano Collection in Ashburnham, Massachusetts. Sheng plays Chopin’s complete Ballades, Impromptus, Préludes and Nocturnes with exquisite taste, poetry and power, fully exploring the instrument’s unique possibilities. The booklet contains extensive background information on the instrument and its place in history.
IMPORTGalina Ustvolskaya was Shostakovich’s favorite pupil, to whom he is known to have said, “You are a phenomenon, while I am but a talent.” Ustvolskaya’s piano works – uncompromising granite sculptures – feature sharp and extreme dynamic contrasts, cluster chords and use of the extreme registers of the keyboard, while the spiritual message is one of infinite despair and passionate protest (whether against the Soviet regime, or against human existence in general). Russian pianist and composer Ivan Sokolov was one of Ustvolskaya’s favored interpreters, giving his performance here a monumental and authoritative stamp of authenticity.

IMPORTLudovico Einaudi’s In A Time Lapse was composed over a period of two years and recorded in October 2012 in a monastery near Verona. Epic and emotional as his bestselling album Divenire, experimental and adventurous as Nightbook, In A Time Lapse goes further by incorporating baroque and Italian folk music, late romantic strings textures and a wide variety of colors through percussion and electronics. The theme is a deep reflection on the idea of time; in the words of Einaudi, “When you get conscious that our time is limited, it’s the moment where you try to fill that space with all your energy and emotions…and live every moment of your life fully as when you were a child.” The album features Einaudi’s band and the string orchestra I Virtuosi Italiani.

Praga presents the latest additions to their critically-acclaimed Richter Edition series, which features audiophile SACD remasterings of historic recordings by the great Russian pianist Sviatoslav Richter. The first contains live performances of Beethoven sonatas from 1959 and 1965 including the Appassionata and Tempest sonatas. The second contains piano sonatas by Schubert in studio recordings from 1956. Featured works are the first and second Grande Sonates for pianoforte. The Tchaikovsky disc pairs the composer’s two most popular scores in performances by two uncontested Russian masters. Conductor Yevgeny Mravinsky leads the Leningrad Philharmonic in a 1956 recording of the Pathétique symphony and teams with Richter in a fiery 1958 recording of the first Piano Concerto.
IMPORTMozart’s passion for the clarinet is well documented, and his compositions for the instrument rank among the most treasured of the great composer’s output. This 2007 live recording from the Théâtre des Champs Elysées in Paris features the acclaimed conductor Riccardo Muti leading the Orchestre National de France. Patrick Messina, the orchestra’s principal clarinet and visiting Professor at London’s Royal Academy, is featured soloist in Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto. This sublime performance is paired fittingly with an equally accomplished reading of Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet, where Messina is partnered with the Philharmonia Quartett Berlin.
IMPORTWergo’s Studio reihe series CD reissues continue with a classic recording of Stravinsky’s last ballet, Agon, performed by the Sinfonieorchester des Südwestfunks, Baden-Baden conducted by Hans Rosbaud and originally released on LP in 1964. Agon was written over a period of three years from 1954-1957. Employing various compositional methods, the resulting work combines modal and serial techniques in a unique way. Stravinsky based the construction of his work on a French dance textbook from the mid-17th century, but gave no thought to the décor or scenery and specified no musical or choreographic intention. The visual performance was to be left entirely to interpretation.

These two releases offer SACD remasterings of classic jazz albums originally released on the Prestige label. 4, 5 and 6 helped establish alto sax giant Jackie McLean on the jazz scene. On this 1956 album, McLean teamed-up with trumpeter Donald Byrd, tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley and a rhythm section that included Mal Waldron on piano, Doug Watkins on bass and Arthur Taylor on drums. Tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley was one of the pioneers of the hard bop movement. On his 1956 release Mobley’s Message, Mobley delivers his signature swinging style in three different variations. Four numbers are by a quintet that includes Donald Byrd on trumpet. For Charlie Parker’s blues, “Au Privave,” the group becomes a sextet with the addition of alto saxophonist Jackie McLean, while Mobley is the sole horn on “Little Girl Blue.” These superb audiophile SACD reissues from Analogue Productions are packaged in “mini LP” jackets, producing an authentic old-school look and feel.

Following on the success of his Hymne au Soleil trilogy, saxophonist Lionel Belmondo opts for a more intimate trio format for his latest project, entitled European Standards. On it, Belmondo reimagines classical music — European “standards” — much like American jazz musicians did in the past with popular music. Belmondo gives us his take on Schubert’s “Serenade” and Chopin’s “Prelude,” as well as several of his own compositions. Pianist Eric Legnini is also building on recent successes. He follows up his award-winning 2011 crossover album The Vox with Sing Twice!, which features drummer Franck Agulhon, bass player Thomas Bramerie, a brass section, a funky guitar and afro-jazz-beat percussion. Sing Twice! is a pop-edged jazz album and a jazz-adorned pop album, showing influences ranging from Stevie Wonder to Fela Kuti.
