NEWS & HIGHLIGHTSSTREET DATE: FRIDAY, AUGUST 14, 2015
One of the world’s top harpsichord and fortepiano performers, Andreas Staier’s musical mastery has made an indelible mark on the interpretation of baroque, classical and romantic repertoire. This month, Staier is the featured soloist on a revelatory new recording from harmonia mundi of Harpsichord Concertos by J.S. Bach. Concertos by Henri Herz are the focus of the latest installment (volume 66!) of Hyperion’s unflaggingly popular Romantic Piano Concerto series. These delightful works are performed by Howard Shelley, who leads the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra from the keyboard. On his second recording for harmonia mundi, Van Cliburn gold medalist Vadym Kholodenko plays Piano Concertos by Grieg and Saint-Saëns. Following up on his Delphian recording of solo works by Britten, cellist Philip Higham’s latest release features the six unaccompanied suites of J.S. Bach. Beethoven is on the program for both Angela Hewitt, who offers listeners volume five in her acclaimed series of Beethoven Piano Sonata recordings for Hyperion, and for the Jerusalem Quartet, who have recorded the String Quartets of Op.18 for harmonia mundi. The wonderfully pure voices of the Orlando Consort are heard in a new Hyperion recording of works by Renaissance composer Loyset Compère. Contemporary music lovers will appreciate harmonia mundi’s new release of works by Peruvian composer Jimmy Lopez and SFS Media’s recording of works by American composer John Adams. Non classical releases are headlined by a CD and DVD set featuring Ravi Shankar’s farewell concert, recorded live in Bangalore, India.

IMPORT Brahms’s 1869 song cycle Die Schöne Magelone is based on a quasi-medieval novella by Ludwig Tieck about a Provençal knight- and his love for the beautiful maiden Magelone. As the songs alone leave much of the story untold, this
version employs a speaker to place each one in context. Originally recorded in September 1997, this set features the great tenor Peter Schreier, accompanied by pianist András Schiff. Speaker Gert Westphal expresses the innocence of the fairy tale and captures the flavor of Tieck’s archaic literary language perfectly.
IMPORT Gramophone Magazine wrote that David Wilde’s playing on Volume 2 “scorns all easy facility,” presenting Chopin not as the familiar salon dandy but as “an epic, gnarled and rugged genius shaking his fist at the universe with all
the defiance of King Lear.” Wilde’s extraordinary Chopin journey continues with Volume 3. On it, his Chopin playing is the radical expressive outcome of a lifetime’s involvement with this inexhaustible composer.

IMPORTPhilip Higham’s début recording of Benjamin Britten’s three solo suites won acclaim across the board, including Disc of the Month accolades from both Gramophone and BBC Music Magazine. For his recording of the Bach Suites, Higham returned to Anna Magdalena Bach’s manuscript copy of the works, recently the object of some controversy. For Higham, however, the manuscript is not a provocation to speculation over authorship but to return to interpretations that are broadly and deeply conceived. Not afraid to question received wisdom, Higham’s thoughtful yet daring approach also leads him to combine elements of period and modern style both in his playing and in his choice of instruments – a 1697 cello for the first five suites and a 2013 five-string instrument to bring out the extraordinary range of colors with which Bach invested the crowning Sixth.

IMPORT “Only now have I learnt how to write quartets properly.” So wrote Beethoven in 1801, having just finished his first set of string quartets at the surprisingly advanced age of 30. The competition of Haydn and Mozart must have been intimidating for the young composer. Performed here by the Jerusalem Quartet, these six String Quartets Op.18 already display much boldness and originality, from the dramatic echoes of Romeo & Juliet in No.1, to the astonishing programmatic finale of No.6, “La Malinconia.”

IMPORT J.S. Bach’s seven fabulously inventive concertos for solo harpsichord and orchestra mark a key stage in the history of the concertante form. The set was compiled during Bach’s Leipzig years, when he directed the city’s Collegium Musicum, and requires unfailing virtuosity and imagination of its performers. In the interpretations of Andreas Staier and the Freiburger Barockorchester, these works come alive again in joyful readings that are sure to delight.

IMPORTHenri Herz was a phenomenon in 1830s Paris and 1940s America, but today his music is mostly forgotten. He wrote eight piano concertos, one of which was lost. Concertos 1, 3, 4, 5, 7 and 8 appear across two previous volumes of the Romantic Piano Concertos series. Here, Howard Shelley and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra put on their finest dancing shoes to complete the cycle with Piano Concerto No.2 (the one with which Herz conquered America in 1846) and three extended fantasies.

IMPORTThe Orlando Consort’s third recording for Hyperion turns to the music of Loyset Compère, a composer the group first investigated some twenty years ago. In the intervening decades musicological research has elevated this composer from also-ran outsider to something of a trailblazer. For example, the wonderfully complex Magnificat recorded here, is now thought to predate the masterworks of Josquin by some fifteen years. A gorgeous selection of motets and chansons further charts this period of radical musical experimentation.

IMPORTFile in: JazzSaxophonist Dimitri Grechi Espinosa’s solo album Angel’s Blows is the fruit of many years of study on the relationship between sound and space, and on the spiritual significance of their connection. Espinosa recorded his “prayers in sound” live at the Baptistery of St. Giovanni, in one of the most spiritually significant piazzas in Christendom. The Baptistery is, in fact, the perfect acoustic architectural setting for bringing music back to its original function of “dialogue” with the sacred, without distinctions of creed or culture. Through his music Espinosa promotes awareness of oneself and others, in the presence of the unity that holds the cosmic order together.

IMPORTFile in: Pop / RockThe power trio Lunatic Toys’s vocabulary is based on pop and rock and delivers improvisations inspired by jazz culture with themes that are poetic, funny and dark at once.
Their compositions leave an open space for a great freedom of expression for the three musicians; sound is the key to this trio committed to creating rich textures and contrasting acoustic climates. Lunatic Toys blends its frenetic keyboards, hypnotic sax and apocalyptic drums in an orgy of pulsating rock and trance jazz. They are a group that throws scores to the wind to serve us songs without words, touched with hazy melodies and shaken rhythms.
IMPORTFile in: Children’sAucassin et Nicolette is an anonymous medieval French chantefable, or combination of prose and verse. The story satirizes courtly love, turning it upside down. It tells of the impossible love of two
adolescents. Aucassin, thwarted by his father, decides to take Nicolette and flee by sea. After a storm, they find themselves on the Isle of Torelore, a magical land where everything is reversed: the king is pregnant and the queen has gone off to war. Fortunately, everything ends well. Combining tradition and modernity, the story (in French only) portrays essential truths about tolerance and acceptance of differences.
