I’ll start by thanking you, the public, for supporting last year’s festival. A big thank you too to all the activists who make it possible for you to enjoy the entertainment we provide. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our past and future sponsors without whom the festival could not go ahead.

Another of the committee’s objectives is to encourage the local villages to participate, hence Pulham, Billingford, Redenhall and other local villages are all involved in providing this year’s programme.

Our continuing aim is to provide a varied programme of fine artistic performances for Harleston and other inspiring venues in our uniquely interesting and beautiful area.

Waveney & Blyth Arts has created a sculpture trail around the 32 acre River Waveney Study Centre site. Curator Sarah Cannell has sought out and encouraged work that responds to this stunning site. Situated at Earsham, it borders the Waveney as it snakes through water meadows, and there is a lake complete with Monet-style bridge to a small island.

Liz McGowan, Rachael Long, Maggie Campbell, Barbara Leaney and John Bardell are some of the artists who have responded to this exciting opportunity. Their work is varied, evocative and surprising and its presence encourages the viewer to see familiar views with fresh eyes.

ON THE BRIGHT SIDESwan Hotel : 2.30 pm : Donations please

A light-hearted illustrated talk by wildlife conservationist, Ian Carstairs

Effective conservation is almost always a struggle, Ian knows. Over the last 30 years, he has spearheaded many voluntary and professional projects to safeguard our heritage as well as setting up a wildlife conservation charity.

But amidst the hard work it can also be great fun. Through his infectious enthusiasm he shares a much lighter side to the battle to save our natural, built and cultural heritage. From being chased by a bear, locked at the top of the clock-tower, jumped over by badgers and campaigning at Parliament to protect their setts, to low-level stomach-churning (and emptying) flights in a jet to photograph the landscape, you will quickly see the vital part maintaining a strong sense of humour has played in his sustained efforts for our environment.

Ian is also author and photographer of a number of books including A Portrait of the Waveney Valley.

HARLESTON u3AuKuLELE APPRECIATION SOCIETYSwan Hotel : 2pm : Donations please

The Orchestra was formed in January this year by one enthusiast and seven learners. Practising weekly, they learnt a variety of songs from Albama to Tipperary with a few drinking songs, sailing songs and hymns thrown in. They have performed in front of local audiences who are invited to sing along from their songbook.

At the Harleston Festival they will perform for a family audience. They will play golden oldies, a selection of songs for children and other evergreen numbers. A new festival songbook will accompany the performance. Expect an enjoyable and entertaining session - with audience participation!

KIDS PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITIONSwan Hotel : Donations please

MONDAY 18TH AuGuST KIDS @ HARLESTON & WAVENEY FESTIVAL 2014

Calling all budding young photographers!

The Harleston Festival is offering young people, aged up to 16 years, the chance to take part in our children’s photographic competition and have their work put on display at a public exhibition in the town.

Keep your eyes open for those special moments . . . and let your imagination run wild! Photographs can be of anything from nature and wildlife to buildings, friends and family. We hope this will encourage youngsters to get out and about with their cameras and camera phones and get snapping.

The competition is free to enter and all entries will be (at the judges’ discretion) put on display at an exhibition at the Swan Hotel on August 18th. Visitors will then have the opportunity to vote for their favourites and prizes will be awarded to the three photos with the most votes at mid-day.

Photos may be no bigger than A4, and have the child’s name, age and contact details on the back. Please don’t put the photo in a frame as it will be pegged to a piece of string. Printed photos must be handed in (in a plastic sleeve) at the Swan Hotel by 9.30am on Monday August 18th.

For more information, phone Fiona Smith on 07805 276 270

LATE OF LATE NIGHT LINE-uPFilms introduced by Bob Edwards & FriendsArchbishop Sancroft School : 7.30pm : £5

Late Night Line-Up was a unique programme on BBC2. It ran from 1964 to 1972. On air every night, it was the last programme of the evening and was open ended, often running into the small hours. It mostly consisted of interviews and discussions, hosted by a small team from whom Joan Bakewell has acquired national fame.

From time to time films ware shown. Made by a three man team of directors of which one, Bob Edwards, lives in the locality. These films covered a variety of subjects, from a short one with cartoonist Ronald Searle in Paris in 1986 to gypsies at Appleby Fair in 1970.

Other films are being assembled and carefully restored from the original 40 odd year old 16mm format by Stewart Orr. We promise a good and stimulating programme, to be introduced by the directors. The full contents will be announced nearer the date. These films are from the golden years of the BBC when creative people were in charge.

If you are interested in the techniques involved in restoring some of the films to a viewable state, the Studio, Museum and Workshop at Prior’s Croft Barn where this was done will be open. For full details see the entry in this brochure for Sunday 24th, 10 am – 5.00 pm.

AN EVENING WITH BRIAN MuIRArchbishop Sancroft High School : 7.30pm : £7.50

Brian Ian Muir, one of the most respected sculptors and artists in the film industry, has been working in film for over 46 years . In 1968, at the age of 16, he began his 4 year apprenticeship as a sculptor / modeller at Elstree Film Studios.

After completing his apprenticeship, Brian left the film industry. He honed his skills by working on many prestigious commissions in London i.e. Royal Coat of Arms for the Crown Court, plaque for Stock Exchange (unveiled by the Queen).

In 1976 Brian was asked to return to Elstree Studios to work on Star Wars and sculpted the now infamous Darth Vader. He also sculpted the Storm Trooper armour, Death Star Droid, CZ 3 and finishing work on C3PO.

During his extensive 46 year career in the film industry Brian has worked on over 70 major movies which are listed on his website with a selection of impressive photographs.

When Brian came to realise there was a real interest in Star Wars and many of the other major movies he had worked on over the years, he wrote his autobiography ‘In the Shadow of Vader’ which has been well received and is currently on its 3rd re-print.

SATuRDAY 23RD AuGuST HARLESTON & WAVENEY FESTIVAL 2014

BILLINGFORD WINDMILL TOuRVenue : 10am - 5pm£3 (Adults), £2 (S/C) Children FREE

The mill is situated south of A143 on a Common very close to the River Waveney. The valley in which the mill stands was formed by an ice age glacier. The valley acts as a funnel providing a better wind force than on a hill top.

The Windmill was built in the mid 1800’s to replace a post mill which was destroyed in a gale. It was one of the last commercially operated wind-powered mills in the country. In the last phase of operation it produced animal feeds. Wind power was replaced by an “Oil” engine which was used to drive a small unit still situated on the ground floor. The current mill has five floors and still has machinery intact.

Norfolk Windmills Trust volunteers look after the mill inside and open it. For special visits by groups and organisations. The mill is also open one Sunday a month, Easter to September. Winter opening is not always possible due to lack of electricity.

Special events are also organised on Sunday openings. A programme of these is available from information centres and Billingford Horseshoes.

Whilst painters were doing a routine repaint, rot was discovered in the sails which were removed, but, due to funding cuts, were not repaired. Fortunately a fund raising committee has been formed to bring the mill back to full working order. The cap will be, removed, repaired and replaced. Also, the steel stocks will be replaced with wood, together with new sails. All this at a cost of well over £100,000.

We, the NWT volunteers, look forward to your visit Saturday 23rd August, open 10.00 - 17.00. 35 -45 minute guided tours costs Adults £3, S/C £2, children free. To learn more a talk on the mill Friday August 22nd, 14.00 at the Swan Hotel.

The University of York Brass Band was formed in 2009 and since its inception has gone from strength to strength.

The band gives termly concerts as well as competing at the University Brass Band Championships. In both 2013 and 2014 the band was able to finish a very creditable 3rd place as well as securing the title of ‘The Most Entertaining Band’ in 2014.

HIDDEN HARLESTONSt. John’s Church : 2pm : Donations please

Following the success of last year’s walk, “Harleston by the Yard”, local historian Gordon Lascelles will be exploring more of the town’s little known corners. With his usual enthusiasm and humour Gordon will show us places we seldom, if ever see and what they tell of our history.

This is a free event, although contributions towards The River Waveney Trust’s education programme would be appreciated.

They try to give audiences a variety of genres to listen to so there is always something for everyone.

Below can be found a list of repertoire they will be playing for the Weekend:

The museum collection comprises well over 1,000 items, many of which work. We have over 100 tape recorders and wireless sets, some of the latter dating back to the early 1920s and beyond. You are invited to step back to the world of glowing valves, rotating tape spools, turntables, and large rolls of ciné film, before the now ubiquitous megabytes, digits and hard discs took over all our lives!

The theme of this year’s Open Day will be Broadcast Equipment. Tea and Coffee will be available on the terrace!

PRIOR’S CROFT OPEN DAYPrior’s Croft Barn : 11am - 5pm

Prior’s Croft Barn is the home of Stewart Orr Sound Services, where we have transferred and restored Bob Edwards’ films for Tuesday’s Festival Film Show. We also transcribe audio from old and redundant formats (tape, 78s, LPs and even Victorian cylinders). The equipment used is all part of the Prior’s Croft Collection. This small museum also contains recording, broadcasting, wireless and gramophone equipment dating back over 100 years, much of it still working.

Our Marconi Line Array Telecine, which is 30 years old and weighs nearly half a ton, has recently been installed and overhauled at Prior’s Croft. Originally from ITV Scotland (used in the production of the Taggart series), we transplanted it from its latter home on the 10th floor of Centre Point in London last year. Recently it was used in the restoration of Bob Edwards’ films, and will be working during our open day. The ex-BBC Radio Norfolk control desk which was installed in the BBC Surrey Street premises in 1980 and took us 9 months to re-install and refurbish will also be up and running – a reminder of the pre-digital age of broadcasting, before, even, the CD appeared on the scene.

A very special event for the Harleston Family Fun Day, and, we think, a first for South Norfolk – everyone should be there.

Vintage and classic cars in all their glory. Drivers and passengers in period dress. All the sounds, smells and excitement of the early days of motoring.

You’ve probably seen them parked on the showground – but now watch them put through their paces on the road, in motion, in procession through the town! Harleston hasn’t seen these cars in action before – make sure not to miss it!

Vintage car and tractor owners from all over Norfolk and Suffolk will bring their beloved vehicles for a spectacular parade through Harleston and onto the Recreation Ground to open the 13th Family Fun Day.

Come, applaud, dress up, bring 20s to 80s glamour to Harleston – and open the Family Fun Day with a bang. Don’t miss it.
