HWAT members are a serious, but informal, bunch of artists and craftspeople.

We are a collective with a ‘Chair’ who, together with the Secretary and Treas-

urer, steers the group through the arrangements for exhibitions and opening

our studios to the public. I’m delighted that my first public job as new Chair

is to introduce our 2017 programme in this exciting, re-designed brochure.

We hope you like it and find it even easier to guide you round our expanded

Trail in 2017. It also details our other exhibitions planned for the year, May –

October, giving it a longer life than usual.

We’re really pleased to add five new and one returning member to our

number and will have a wonderful 34 studios open for visits this year. The

Trail dates are a little later in 2017 – the last weekend of June and the first two

of July. We are anticipating great summer weather.

Sadly, I have to record the death of Alan Frewin of Millhouse Pottery in

Harleston. A member of the Trail from its very early days, Alan was a stalwart

of HWAT. His work is very highly regarded and widely collected. We shall miss

him dearly.

Please enjoy our 2017 programme and support our advertisers – we are

very grateful for their backing of our fresh new brochure.

See you on the Trail!

Malcolm Cudmore

This year, HWAT is supporting the East Coast Hospice. During our Spring

Show – 2nd May to 4th June at the Old Kings Head Brockdish – several works

have been donated by the artists and these sales will benefit the ECH. There

will be a special ‘Meet the Artists’ event on Sunday 7th May 3–6pm.

We are also holding a fund-raising exhibition at Ditchingham Hall Open

Gardens on Sunday 18th June, 2–5pm in the ECH marquee.

The East Coast Hospice is a local charity whose aim is to build Margaret

Chadd House, a ten-bed specialist palliative care facility with day-care and

complementary therapies near Gorleston, Norfolk. There is no such inpatient

hospice facility in our area, and the ECH is committed to improving end of life

care for the Great Yarmouth and Waveney community.

ECH has already purchased 7.54 acres of land for the hospice site which is

situated in a quiet rural setting near Beacon Park in Gorleston. The fundrais-

ing team has a busy schedule of events arranged for 2017, not only to raise

much needed funds to be able to start the build but also to raise awareness

of this worthwhile project. ECH currently also has ten charity shops working

hard for the cause.
