A team consisting of the 2015 Verizon Indycar Series Rookie of the Year, Gabby Chaves; racing legend, Al Unser, Jr.; and team owner, Mike Harding.

Harding Racing is an auto racing team in the Verizon IndyCar Series that made their debut in the 2017 Indianapolis 500. The team is led by Mike Harding, the owner and president of Harding Group, a concrete and asphalt paving company based in Indianapolis. Two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Al Unser, Jr. serves a consultant and as the team’s driving coach. Gabby Chaves is their driver. Larry Curry currently acts as the team manager and competition director. Matt Curry, who worked the 2016 season for AJ Foyt Racing and was an engineer on Tony Kanaan’s Indy 500-winning effort in 2013 with KV Racing Technology, is the lead engineer.

In addition to their 9th place finish in the Indy 500, the team competed at Texas Motor Speedway and Pocono Raceway, finishing fifth and fifteenth, respectively. The team plans to race the full-season in 2018.

Over the course of a 500-mile race, there are many factors that determine success. Of course you need a great car and a talented driver, but there are also countless calculations that occur behind the scenes that nobody sees, each of which can have a huge impact on the outcome of the race. The relationship between a driver and management is paramount to a team’s success. In the last two years, Gabby Chaves, Al Unser Jr. and Mike Harding have risen through the racing ranks together, and now have one of the fastest cars on the Verizon IndyCar Series circuit.

THE TEAM

HARDING RACING STORY Harding Racing has a long standing tradition with 18 years of collaboration between Harding Group and IMS. The relation-ship evolved over time to where they are today. Harding Racing has assembled a team of racing professionals to participate in the Verizon Indy Car Series. Harding Racing is part of Harding Group, a prominent local Indianapolis company that has conducted business in Indiana and surrounding states since 1960.

MIKE HARDING - Team Owner Harding Racing is owned and managed by Mike Harding. Mike is also the owner and CEO of Indianapolis based Harding Group, an asphalt and concrete contractor. Under his direction, Harding Group is an official sponsor of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He has been involved with the paving industry and his father’s company, F.E. Harding, since the early ‘80’s. Mike purchased the company from his father and is now sole owner. Under Mike’s leadership, Harding Group consistently ranks in the “Top Ten” asphalt maintenance companies in the USA, year after year.

AL UNSER JR. - Consultant/Driver Coach Al Unser Jr’s racing career is one of the sport’s best. He has 329 starts, 34 wins, and 7 poles. Little Al ran in The World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series, Can-Am, CART, IROC, and IRL Series. He has 5 championship titles and various awards in racing. He is a two-time winner of the Indianapolis 500, 1992 and 1994. Al Unser Jr. was named ABC Wide World of Sports Athlete of the Year in 1994.

GABBY CHAVES - Driver At the age of twenty four, Gabby Chaves has made a name for himself by winning races and challenging for championship titles. The well liked and respected Chaves began his racing career at the age of thirteen and has won three championships (Formula BMW Pacific,Formula BMW Americas, and Indy Lights) and two Rookie of the Year awards (2015 Sunoco Indianapolis 500, and 2015 Verizon IndyCar Series). Gabby Chaves placed 9th in the 2017 Indianapolis 500. This was his best finish in the Indianapolis 500.

GABBY CHAVES

Chaves has made a name for himself by winning races and challenging for championship titles. The Colombian-American first got behind the wheel of a race car at the age of 13, winning a Skip Barber Racing Shoot-out scholarship. In his first full-season of competition, the former Easy Kart, Stars of Karting and Florida Winter Tour champion captured the Colombian Grand Prix Formula Renault 2000 title and finished as the series runner-up in the Skip Barber Eastern Regional Series. Building on this success, Chaves went undefeated in the 2006-07 Skip Barber Regional Southern Series, winning all 10 races. He continued his winning ways one year later, extending his Skip Barber Racing winning streak to 17 consecutive victories, leading the Skip Barber National Series before making the switch to Formula BMW Pacific competition where he finished in Fourth place. Chaves returned to the top of the championship charts in 2009, winning the final Formula BMW Americas title with five wins and podium finishes in every race. In 2010, Chaves raced full-time in Europe, winning the Italian Formula 3 Championship Rookie of the Year award. He made his GP3 Series debut in 2011, earning five top-10 finishes in the highly competitive series. Chaves returned to North America in 2012, competing in the Mazda Road to Indy-backed Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear with JDC Motorsports, where he finished as the title runner-up with two wins. In 2013, Gabby competed in the Firestone Indy Lights championship with multiple-time champions Schmidt Peterson Motorsports, finishing as the title runner-up with ten podiums and one victory. In the Freedom 100, contested at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway just two days before the Indy 500, he finished second in a spectacular four-wide finish at the checkered flag, by a mere 0.0026 of a second - the closest finish in Indianapolis Motor Speedway history. In 2014 Gabby returned to Indy Lights with one goal: To win the Championship. He accomplished that goal and gave his team, Belardi Auto Racing, their first Championship Title. Earning eleven podium finishes and four victories, Chaves also won the Freedom 100 in decisive fashion, with a last-lap pass that earned him the victory he’d been denied in 2013. Aside from Indy Lights that season, he competed in the Deltawing for legendary owner, Don Panoz, in the endurance races during the 2014 IMSA Tudor United Sportscar Championship and was the winner of the Famous Six Hours of Bogota Endurance Race in Overall Class and Super GT Class. Chaves was chose as Fan Favorite Colombian Driver of the Year, and was award the FIA and FCAD best Colombian Driver of 2014. After winning the 2014 Indy Lights championship, Gabby Chaves graduated to the Verizon IndyCar Series with Bryan Herta Au-tosport, showing again that he is a fierce competitor with the raw talent and mindset, by winning the Indy 500 Sunoco Rookie of the Year award and Indycar Rookie of the Year Title. He also was invited by Honda Racing and Honda Performance Develop-ment to take part in the inaugural Tony Stewart Classic midget race, where he showed again his skills and talent, this time to the Nascar World. When Gabby is away from the racetrack, he trains daily at PitFit Training to maintain a focused and healthy lifestyle. He’s an avid animal lover and advocate. Often times, you can find Gabby enjoying other activities that include hiking and kayaking as well as keeping his two dogs -Aussie and Milo- busy and active on outdoor runs. He currently resides in Indianapolis, IN.
