Happy Tuesday!DQ: Observe the demonstration and describe how energy is transferred to launch the air propelled projectile.Draw a diagram that shows all the parts of the system (System? what does that mean anyway?)
Today:Introduction to Force and Motion
Work on Energy Transformation ProjectHW: Work on your Energy Transformation Project
Now…Think-Write-Pair-Share• How do the different components of this system
support or cause the energy transfers that launch the rocket?
Systems• Organized• Have a purpose• Have parts or components that are connected and
interdependent• Components work together to achieve the purpose
of the system• Stop functioning if a component is removed or
changed • Have boundaries – but are a part of larger systems• Have inputs and outputs
How is energy transformed in this system?
Please answer this question in writing – remember to use complete sentences. When you finish, please take out your Energy Transformation Project Handout
Spend the rest of class working on your Energy Transformation Project
Don’t forget the writing!• Theresa happily put on her helmet and hopped on her
bike after class. The U of O campus was its usually busy self – even busier on this Wednesday before Thanksgiving break. Theresa began to change some of her chemical energy from breakfast into rotational energy as she pushed on the pedals. As the bike began to move, that rotational energy was changed into translational as she headed down 13th street toward her apartment. She was thinking about dinner tomorrow night when her Grandma would be bringing five different kinds of pie – yum. She couldn’t wait to get home. Distracted by her thoughts, she kept speeding up and increasing her kinetic energy as she rode through campus.
• Unfortunately, lots of other students had the same idea. The street was packed with bikes and walkers. One unfortunate student walked right in front of Theresa as she reached top speed. CRASH!! All that translational energy was suddenly transferred on impact and was changed into the big OOF! sound made by the pedestrian. As they both collided with the pavement, a painful amount of their translational energy was transformed into thermal energy because of friction between their hands and the black-top. As if she were full of elastic energy, Theresa jumped up converting chemical energy into translational and then gravitational energy.
