From the President ~
Dear Members and Friends,
As many of you know, I recently attended the
CAHHS Volunteer Leadership Conference with my
fellow Auxiliary members Bessie Wilson, Mary
Newbold and Bill Newbold. I attended numerous
seminars on a wide array of topics from healthcare to
philanthropy and the roles that volunteers will play in the
coming years. I would like to share with you some key
thoughts on topics which piqued my interest.
Donate Life California presented a compelling
lecture about organ donation. There are currently
120,000 people waiting for an organ transplant in the
United States. Out of these, 18% reside in California.
For every donor, seven lives can be saved. Many people
are not aware that donors may be any age and that
most religions do support or permit such donations. Of
the people waiting for an organ, one third will die before
the required organ becomes available. Even if one’s
organs are deemed non-viable, skin, bone and corneas
may be transplanted. Donate Life California is partnered
with the DMV to sign up for organ donation.
Many myths were debunked in the presentation.
Several heartwarming stories were shared including a
child who received a liver and is now thriving. Anyone
interested in learning more can visit the website
www.donatelifecalifornia.org or www.pinkdotplate.org. I
decided to join the more that ten million people who
have already registered to be donors. It was simple,
meaningful and may provide help to others in the future.
Another topic that was discussed was the value of
volunteerism in a rapidly changing healthcare system.
Volunteers are more vital than ever before. Although a
monetary society may devalue the worth of a volunteer
because we don’t earn a salary, we know better. We
create stability and hope where there is turmoil. We
combat apathy. We are symbols of what is good and
right and we bear witness to what is happening. A lovely
quote I heard at the conference was “bloom where you
are planted”.
Volunteers are now moving outside the realm of the
hospital and venturing toward helping homebound
seniors with day-to-day tasks to remain independent in
their homes. I met volunteers who make quilts to give to
palliative care patients in the final stages of life. These
quilts are then given to the patient’s family. Many
volunteers who have day jobs donate their weekend
time by playing music in their hospital cancer centers.
Always remember that we are a mighty force and we do
make a difference. One small acat of kindness will
continue to resonate and will inspire others
In closing, I want to thank the Auxiliary for
sponsoring my attendance at the CAHHS Conference. I
learned so many new things about the current issues
facing healthcare in California and America as well as
the role volunteers will play in alleviating the burdens on
the system.
Please remember to attend our March 24 General
Meeting as described in the Program News article
below. I hope to see you there.

MERRY MEMOS
As we prepare in the festivities of celebrating OUR VOLUNTEERS, during National Volunteer Week – We celebrate our Volunteers at Northridge Hospital Medical Center as WINNERS.
Winning is not always the goal, but doing our best whenever we participate in anything is the greatest challenge. Olympic athletes are reminded of this through the Olympic Creed:
The most importing thing is not to win but to take part, just as, the most important
thing in life is not the triumph, but the successes.
On April 11th we will Celebrate with Our
Volunteers, all of their successes and honor their great achievements and caring dedication.
A special tribute to our Volunteer Team.
Mary Grim Director Volunteer Services

WOMEN VS MEN
MARRIAGE A woman marries a man expecting he will change, but he doesn't. A man marries a woman expecting that she won't change, but she does.
DRESSING UP A woman will dress up to go shopping, water the plants, empty the trash, answer the phone, read a book, and get the mail. A man will dress up for weddings and funerals.
NATURAL Men wake up as good-looking as they went to bed. Women somehow deteriorate during the night.
ARGUMENTS A woman has the last word in any argument. Anything a man says after that is the beginning of a new argument.
OFFSPRING Ah, children. A woman knows all about her children. She knows about dentist appointments and romances, best friends, favorite foods, secret fears and hopes and dreams. A man is vaguely aware of some short people living in the house.
BATHROOMS A man has six items in his bathroom: toothbrush and toothpaste, shaving cream, razor, a bar of soap, and a towel. The average number of items in the typical woman's bathroom is 337. A man would not be able to identify more than 20 of these items.
MONEY A man will pay $2 for a $1 item he needs. A woman will pay $1 for a $2 item that she doesn't need but it's on sale.
EATING OUT When the bill arrives, Mike, Dave and John will each throw in $20, even though the total bill is only for $32.50. None of them will have anything smaller and none will actually admit they want change back.
When the girls get their bill, out come the pocket calculators.
If Mike, Dave and John go out, they will affectionately refer to each other as Fat Boy, Bubba and Wildman.
If Laura, Kate and Sarah go out for lunch, they will call each other Laura, Kate and Sarah.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY A married man should forget his mistakes. There's no use in two people remembering the same thing!
VOLUNTEER NEWS
It’s not too late to sign up for our (mandatory) Annual volunteer Compliance classes…They will be held Saturday, March 1
st, 10 AM – 1 PM, in the
Education Auditorium, and Thursday, March 6th
, 12:30 PM – 3:30 PM, in the Education Auditorium. We will be conducting Competency Evaluations, and will serve refreshments to give you a chance to catch up with fellow volunteers whose paths may not always cross. With Dignity Health new guidelines, our new compliance date is March, so it’s very important that we achieve 100% compliance. Please contact Gaby to sign up, or if you have questions.
As you have probably heard by now, Northridge Hospital has been randomly selected by CMS to conduct a validation survey of our total hospital operations and more, as a follow-up to our recent Joint Commission (TJC) visit. Needless to say, this took everyone by surprise, and we’re all working together to make this CMS visit successful as well.
With all of this serious business going on, we’ll all be ready for a CELEBRATION. Coincidentally, we’re fast and furiously working on our annual Volunteer Recognition Lunch, where we’ll all be singing “A Happy Tune” on Friday, April 11
th at the Odyssey. Watch for
your invitation to arrive in the mail soon, and join us as we celebrate anniversaries as well as remarkable achievements of YOU, our special volunteers!

THE CARING CORNER I
We never get what we want. We never want what we get. We never have what we like. We never like what we have.
An still, we live and love. That’s life.
It true that we don’t know what we have until it’s gone.
But, it’s also trude that we don’t know what we’ve been missing until it arrives.
