I imagined all sorts of difficult days, driving in the snow to perform my official duties. I even invested in genuine snow tires just to be on the safe side. Well, the gods smiled on me as we had such a mild, snowless, winter. For this I am thankful; and so I welcome spring and say whew, I made it. April is “Bring a Friend to Rotary Month”, which reminds me that one of our biggest challenges for this Rotary year is membership. As I advised everyone in my official visits, it is critical that we keep our membership numbers up as we are dangerously close to the minimum number of 1200 members needed to maintain our District. I also spoke to you about the new types of membership that Rotary is rolling out as pilot programs: Corporate Member: Allows a corporation or company in the club’s area to become a member of the Rotary club, appointing up to four individuals to attend club meetings, serve on projects, and participate in other ways. Associate Member: Creates the category of associate member to allow prospective Rotarians to become acquainted with your club, its members, its programs and projects, and the expectation of club membership, with the intent of becoming an active member within a designated period of time. Satellite Club: Allows clubs to conduct multiple meetings during a week, each taking place at a different location, day or time. Innovative and Flexible Rotary Clubs: Allows clubs to self-determine their operations to better fit the needs of their members and community. As you can see, there are plenty of ways to encourage membership, both tried and true and new and innovative. Let’s all give membership some thought this month. And as an added incentive: I will give any club that brings in three (3) new members during the month of April 500 bonus points on their District awards. HAPPY SPRING – HAPPY APRILWhen I started my year as Governor last July, one of my biggest concerns was winter. I imagined

all sorts of difficult days, driving in the snow to perform my official duties.

I also spoke to you about the new types of membership that Rotary is rolling out as pilot programs:

Corporate Member: Allows a corporation or company in the club’s area to become a member of the Rotary club, appointing up to four individuals to attend club meetings, serve on projects, and participate in other ways.

In closing, I ask that you take a few moments to read the newsletter this month as there is so much happening in our District during my last three months as Governor that it is impossible for me to cover it all on page one. And I thought I would be a “lame duck” by now – WRONG.

ROTARY DISTRICT 7300 CONFERENCE

JUNE 21-24, 2012

Fellow Rotarians,

The Rotary District 7300 Conference, the highlight of my year, is just a few short months away. Thanks to Chairman, Bob Rupp, and Registration Chairman, Johnny Mock, plans are well on the way for this fun-filled weekend. NOW is the time to register and make your hotel reservations. Our newly-designed brochure is the first step in what promises to be a weekend packed full of information, good food, and plenty of Rotary HOSPITALITY and FUN for all.

As the brochure outlines, we will have activities for KIDS. They will be out of school so bring them along.

Thursday has been designated as “Adventure Day”. We’re planning to do the Zip Line, (I of course, will be doing this for a price!), the Alpine Slide and Sporting Clays. There is now an outdoor pool and bar area, which is great, of course.

Friday morning we have Plenary Sessions, followed by golf and/or lunch, a cake decorating demonstration by a Seven Springs Mountain Resort Chef, cocktail hour, a Mountain Cook-Out for dinner with a Country Western Band. Cowboy attire is most welcome! Last, but certainly not least, are the hospitality rooms sponsored by various Rotary clubs and are open to all.

Saturday, if you have survived Thursday and Friday, is another jam-packed day. We have Plenary Sessions in the morning featuring our New Generations Programs. You won’t want to miss this as the students are always a hit! The business meeting will be held before lunch and during lunch we’ll feature Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) students and World Peace Scholars. For afternoon entertainment we’ve brought back the Fashion Show, which was a huge hit several years ago. I know I bought everything that I will be wearing in the show. Imagine that! Too bad they don’t have shoes. Late afternoon there will be a cocktail party/reception, a dinner for the kids, the awards banquet and the infamous HOSPITALITY ROOMS, of course.

Sunday, if you have survived Thursday, Friday and Saturday, will be the Memorial Service and departure for home.

Some important points to note this year:

• There is NO REGISTRATION FEE being charged.

• We are conducting an aggressive AD CAMPAIGN and are asking every Rotary club to place a $100.00 advertisement. We are encouraging individual Rotarians to advertise as well. These funds will help support the Rotary District 7300 Conference in lieu of the registration fee.

• First time attendees, who stay one night, will receive a $50.00 credit on their District registration form meal costs.

What more can I say, but SIGN UP TODAY and “Go Back to the Future” with me and your fellow Rotarians.

I know that Rotary clubs don’t intentionally decide to use ineffective membership tactics, but many of us fall into bad habits without know-ing it. Bad habits prevent a club from growing. What are they?

Setting low goals. Good clubs set high goals. They are proactive in determining what they want to accomplish.

Making excuses. Bad economy, poor meeting place, unappetiz-ing meals, nobody joins anything these days; none of these excuses are acceptable.

Lack of preparation. Bad clubs wing it; make things up as they go. No preparation equals no results.

Inability to handle sales objections. Are your club members trained in how to recruit and sell Rotary membership? Probably not. See paragraph above.

Not getting a commitment. Some members recruit a prospect, bring him or her to a meeting, do a decent sales job, and stop there. They don’t get a commitment and close the sale.

Making vague statements. This shows a lack of training. Throwing out vague Rotary concepts rather than digging into a prospect’s thoughts and concerns as to why there might be an interest in joining Rotary will not grow your club’s membership.

Interrupting. Let the prospects finish their thoughts. You learn a lot more by listening and not interrupting with your opinions.

Earn respect and credibility. Close membership sales by eliminat-ing these bad habits from your Rotary membership activities.

Beginning in April I have a very heavy international travel sched-ule and I may or may not be able to submit an article for May and/or June’s newsletter.

Kathy and I are traveling to Belgium on April 19, 2012 for Matt Mannesberg’s wedding. Matt was a former Rotary Youth Exchange student who lived with PDG Chris Beck and visited with us quite often. When Matt was in college, he contacted me regarding an internship with my company. I hired Matt and he completed a three month internship with All-Pak, Inc.

This past Christmas Matt came to Pittsburgh with his fiancé, Jess, and invited us to their wedding – thus our travel to Belgium.

I return from Belgium on April 27, 2012 and leave again on May 2, 2012 for Bangkok, Thailand in order to attend the Rotary Inter-national Convention. We’ll be in Thailand until May 11, 2012, at which time I will fly to South Korea to meet up with our Group Study Exchange (GSE) team as their leader. I return home June 12, 2012. So you can see why I may or may not be able to write another Foundation Article.

With all of this said, I want to thank everyone in the District who supported The Rotary Foundation (TRF). It’s been a privilege to serve as your District Rotary Foundation Chair for the past three years. Even through some tough economic times the Rotarians of District 7300 have met the District’s goals each of the last three years. Your generosity and support is commendable.

It’s not just about the money. It’s about the GOOD that the money does. Clean water, literacy, polio vaccinations, micro businesses, teaching crop rotation and land sustainability, women’s rights, fighting hunger – the list of all the GOOD that we do as Rotarians goes on and on.

Don’t forget the GOOD that your giving does for Rotary District 7300 and our clubs. Our Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) program, Ambassadorial Scholars and our District Simplified Grants. We had 17 Rotary clubs participate this year in District Simplified Grant money. The funds were used to purchase dictionaries for third grade students, polio vaccinations, support literacy projects, and to help the elderly and indigent.

So again, thank you for supporting your Rotary Foundation. Please continue to do so under our incoming District Foundation Chair, PDG Rick Martin.

For help with reporting, please contact the Webmaster [email protected].

The Carnegie-Collier Rotary Club was pleased and honored to receive a Proclamation from the Carnegie Borough Mayor and Council on Monday, February 13, 2012.

Several members of the club were present, including current Rotary District 7300 Governor, Sue Kelly, to receive public recognition from a grateful community for the club’s efforts since its founding in 1924.

Mayor Jack Kobistek mentioned a significant, but not complete list of projects that have been supported such as, local Meals on Wheels, an adult literacy program, the Carnegie Boys & Girls Club, “Shoes That Fit” for our elementary schoolchildren, the Salvation Army Christmas and other programs, dictionaries for third grade students, 300,000 meals packed for local food banks in the last three years, and also providing weekend meals for elementary schoolchildren’s meals program.

Mayor Jack Kobistek proclaimed February 2012 as Carnegie-Collier Rotary Club Month. We wish to thank the Carnegie Council, Mayor, and Community for this extraordinary recognition.

Members of the Green Tree Rotary Club met on Saturday, March 31, 2012, to prepare and deliver 125 Easter baskets to area shut-ins. Baskets were filled with healthy goodies to snack on, a puzzle book to help keep minds sharp, and a flower donated by the Green Tree Garden Club. It really

brightened the day for the people who received them.

Members who helped: Dave Montz (Chair), Rick Cannello, ADG Sandy Grimes, Marge Tedesco, Linda D'Angelo, Barb Bennett, Rick Porach, Tom Michael, Steve Burkett, Dave Wandrisco, Dan Riegner, Brian Rohleder, Dennis Molnar, John Herington and Dick Rothrock. Mary Montz, Kris Pusateri, and Amy Lathers Michael also helped.

On Wednesday, March 28, 2012, a membership reception was held at Chartiers Country Club by the Crafton-Ingram Rotary Club. Rotarians and 11 potential Rotarian guests were introduced to the many projects Rotary International supports along with a presentation by Tom Knight. In attendance were Rotary District 7300 Governor, Sue Kelly, and Assistant District Governor, Sandy Grimes, amongst others.

Green Tree Rotary Club

John Herington of Green Tree Rotary Club was surprised at the Rotary meeting on Thursday, March 22, 2012 when members sang “Happy Birthday” as his birthday cake was placed in front of him.

When asked later what he wished for when he blew out the candle, he said, “Well, I was at a Rotary meeting, so I wished for total eradication of Polio.”

His second wish, as he cut the cake, was for a new Jeep!

“What Kind of Rotarian Are You?”

In the Rotary world and in our District, there are several different kinds of Rotarians.

There are the “Never Miss a Meeting” Rotarians, the “Quiet” Rotarians who take action, the “I don’t really know what Rotary is outside of my Club” Rotarians, the “Outgoing” Rotarians who act as much as they speak, the “How did I end up on the Board?” Rotarians, the “Gung-Ho” Rotarians, the “Hesitant to change” Rotarians and the “Let’s try something new Rotarians” ... just to name a few.

Throughout our “Rotary careers”, we each have had an opportunity to change our “Rotary style”. Just as the spring flowers are in bloom, we can emerge and metamorphose as fresher and more vibrant Rotarians.

One way of beginning this “Rotary change” is by attending the District Assembly from 9:00-11:30 AM on Saturday, April 21, 2012 at The Neighborhood Academy, located at 709 North Aiken Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15206.

Breakouts sessions including topics such as New Generations, Membership, Grants and more! There is no cost to attend the District Assembly, however, please bring your slightly used men’s and women’s business apparel to be donated to a local high school which is in need of business clothing for student internships.

The U.S. Global Leadership Coalition, a bipartisan group, sent a team to Pittsburgh this week to seek public support for America's international affairs, or foreign aid, budget. The organization's advisory council is headed by retired General and former Secretary of State, Colin Powell, and includes all other previous secretaries of state including Madeleine Albright, plus Pittsburgh's Paul O'Neill, a former Treasury Secretary.

Former West Point Superintendent Lt. Gen., Daniel W. Christman, spoke Tuesday, March 27, 2012 on behalf of the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition to an audience of about 250 at the Senator John Heinz History Center. Members from Bethel Park, Green Tree, Oakland and Pittsburgh Rotary Clubs were in attendance.

Late Friday afternoon, April 6, 2012, a call came in to the District from a woman who needed a wheelchair for her older friend. Her friend was hoping to go to Easter services with her, but due to an ongoing decline in his mobility from a condition in his legs and knees, he could no longer walk.

Since it was Good Friday, she knew it would be difficult to find a wheelchair at

that late date, but she called Rotary just in case there was a chance. On Saturday, a wheelchair was delivered to her home, well in

time for her and her friend to attend Easter services. The Ambridge Rotary Club has been collecting and lending out medical equip-ment and supplies for almost 20 years; and one of their members offered to store it all in their company's warehouse. Responding to an E-mail from the District Secretary, Sandra Rebholz, District Governor-Elect, Walt Sickles, went to the warehouse, found a wheelchair and delivered it within 24 hours of the call!

Rapid-fire Rotary in action! Makes you proud to be a Rotarian!

Dear Fellow Rotarians,

Trustee Chair Boyd and Chair-elect Wilkinson have approved The Rotary Foundation offering double Foundation recognition points for all recurring contributions to the Annual Fund between April 1, 2012 and July 1, 2012.

Double recognition points will be automatically given to Rotarians and friends of Rotary who are enrolled in Rotary’s recurring giving program, Rotary Direct, and make one or more scheduled (monthly, quarterly or annual) contributions between April 1, 2012 and July 1, 2012. Once registered in Member Access, Rotarians can contribute at www.rotary.org/contribute. Please note that Rotary’s online system can accommodate one-time or recurring contributions, and is available in 12 currencies. The recurring option is presented in Step 2 of the contribution process under the section titled “Frequency”. Donors may also enroll using The Rotary Foundation Contribution Form (123), by selecting “Make this a recurring contribution”.

Unlike past promotions for online giving, this special opportu-nity is available to recurring (monthly, quarterly, annual) contribu-tions only, and is not available for one-time contributions. All scheduled transactions that take place between April 1, 2012 and July 1, 2012 will generate double Foundation recognition points, but will not result in double recognition amount for the individual donor. Donors can extend their available Foundation recognition points to others to name them as a Paul Harris Fellow or Multiple Paul Harris Fellow. A donor’s personal recognition amount which is used to calculate their own Paul Harris Fellow status will not be subject to doubling.

The primary sources of communication regarding this promotion will be www.rotary.org, E-mail to club and district officers, the Every Rotarian, Every Year Newsletter and Rotary’s social networks. A detailed Information Guide will accompany the web announcement, scheduled for late March. Questions may be directed to the Rotary International Office serving your region or to Rotary’s Contact Center, [email protected] or by phone, 866.976.8279.

Book: Paul Harris and the Birth of RotaryBy Fred A. Carvin

In 1905, Paul Harris started a movement that today is one of the world’s premiere service organizations. His creation, Rotary International has quite literally touched the lives of hundreds of millions of people in its global quest to make a difference.

Yet few people, both inside and outside of Rotary know much about Paul Harris or how his ground-breaking club developed. This number includes a majority of current Rotarians who have little knowledge or understanding about the man who started it all.

For over a century, the relevant facts about his life and motivations have been clouded by myths and misconceptions. Now, with the discovery of hundreds of never before published letters, documents and exclusive archival sources, a better comprehension of the man and his times has emerged. This latest material gives new insight to who Paul Harris was. It provides answers to questions like:

• How did his early life in rural Wallingford, Vermont help forge his thoughts about Rotary?• What role did his parents and grandparents play in developing his later actions?• What happened during his college years that affected him for the rest of his life?• Who were the men and women that influenced his ideals? • When did Rotary and Paul Harris change directions and become more humanitarian? This 627-page book offers an in-depth look at how Paul Harris and early

Rotary came into existence. It’s the story of one man’s struggle to find his inner self and how his philosophy changed the world.

Packing Event

The “Meals of Hope” Campaign is

a community project of the

Carnegie-Collier Rotary Club

package and distribute food to
