WED., JAN. 15, 7 PM: THE ERIEVILLE NELSON HERITAGE SOCIETY SPECIAL PRESENTATION ON THE 1945 B-17 CRASH IN NELSON AT THE CAZENOVIA PUBLIC LIBRARY. On a snowy January day a B-17 bomber on a training mission was unable to make its original final landing spot in Orange County due to weather, ran out of fuel before locating it’s secondary site at the Rome Army Air Field and crashed in Nelson, NY. One soldier died when his parachute didn’t open and others on the plane suffered injuries. Madison County Historian Matthew Urtz will facilitate the event will feature story of the plane crash including a recent inter-view with the pilot of the plane. There is no charge for this event. The winter Hills & Hollow, the quarterly newsletter of the Erieville Nelson Heritage Society, is dedicated to the event, will be available at the presentation as well. Barbecue Chicken Pizza Bake

Sometimes you get a pizza craving, but you want something that’s a little bit healthier… That’s where dishes like this Barbecue Chicken Pizza Bake come in. There’s no crust involved, but it still has that absurdly delicious flavor combo of barbecue sauce, red onion, and chicken that Barbecue Chicken Pizza does. There’s some cheese going on, but depending on what kind of barbecue sauce you use, it can totally be a much healthier lower carb alternative to fulfill that craving.

Did I mention that it’s really easy to make? Well, it is. There’s no searing or pre-cooking needed; it’s just a simple baked dish that’s on the table in thirty minutes or less. (I don’t know about you but I’m always looking for more of those kinds of recipes. Always.)

You tuck some boneless skinless chicken breasts into a baking dish and smother them with barbecue sauce. This tastes just as great with a lower-sugar sauce, so if you’re watching your carbs, feel free to go ahead and start your ovens. You bake the chicken for twenty minutes before you add all the other goodness to it.

There’s still gouda and red onions and pickled jalapeños and bacon to finish things off. Once those are added, it heads back into the oven just long enough for the cheese to melt and the onions to mellow a bit. Now, I know it can be hard for everyone to agree on pizza toppings, but luckily you can treat this the same way you would a half-and-half pizza – leave the jalapeños off half, add more onions to the other, etc. No matter how you arrange it, that’s all the work there is for you to do – dinner is served!

INGREDIENTS: 30 minutes to prepare serves 44 boneless skinless chicken breasts1 cup barbecue sauce1 cup smoked gouda cheese, grated1/2 red onion, thinly sliced1/4 cup pickled jalapeños4 slices bacon, cooked and crumbledCilantro, chopped, for servingKosher salt and freshly ground pepper, to tastePREPARATIONPreheat oven to 375°F and grease a 9x11-inch baking dish

with nonstick spray.Season chicken liberally with salt and pepper and arrange

in baking dish. Pour barbecue sauce over and around chicken, making sure that some sauce gets under the chicken as well.

Bake for 20 minutes. Remove from oven and top with cheese, red onions, jalapeños, and bacon. Return to oven and

continue baking until chicken is cooked through and cheese has melted, 5-10 minutes more.

Top with cilantro and serve. Enjoy!

Creamy Chicken Rice Casserole

It can be hard to put our love for the humble casserole

into words because there’s just so much to love about them, but if we had to pick one single reason, it would certainly be their ability to bring you a complete and comforting meal in one dish. There’s a casserole out there for every occasion, but this is one that works for just about any of them. It’s creamy, it’s cheesy, and it’s a classic – Chicken Rice Casserole.

It’s classic enough that we’re sure you’ve made it before, but this version makes it worth trying again, we promise. There’s no precooking of the rice or chicken required. It’s just a matter of stirring your ingredients up and getting them in the oven. (Just make sure that the aluminum foil covers the baking dish tightly so that everything gets cooked through.) This uses regular rice and not the ‘minute’ variety, so the grains come out tender but hold their shape. The sauce relies on condensed cream of celery soup, but you could swap that out for cream of chicken or cream of mushroom if that’s what you had on hand. Happy eating!

INGREDIENTS: 1 hour 30 minutes to prepare serves 4-63 cups chicken broth2 (10.5 oz) cans cream of celery soup1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter, melted2 large boneless skinless chicken breasts, cubed2 cups white rice, uncooked1 teaspoon kosher salt1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper1 teaspoon garlic powder1/2 teaspoon dried thyme1 cup cheddar cheese, gratedPREPARATIONPreheat oven to 375°F and grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.

Set aside.In a medium bowl, mix together the chicken broth, cream

of celery soup, and butter until well combined. Add the rice, chicken, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and thyme.

Pour rice mixture into prepared baking dish and cover tightly with aluminum foil. Bake until rice is cooked through and chicken is tender, about 1 hour 15 minutes.

Uncover, sprinkle cheese evenly over the top and return to oven until cheese is melted and bubbly, about 10 more minutes. Let rest 10 minutes before serving. Enjoy!

the Universe – Surprising Result of Fun Experiment

Reveals a New Use for ToyFor the first time, LEGO®

has been cooled to the lowest temperature possible in an experiment which reveals a new use for the popular toy.

Its special properties mean it could be useful in the development of quantum computing.

A world leading team of ultra-low temperature physicists at Lancaster University decided to place a LEGO ® figure and four LEGO ® blocks inside their record-breaking dilution refrigerator.

This machine – specially made at the University – is the most effective refrigerator in the world, capable of reaching 1.6 millidegrees

above absolute zero (minus 273.15 Centigrade), which is about 200,000 times colder than room temperature and 2,000 times colder than deep space.

The results – published in the prestigious journal Scientific Reports – were surprising.

Dr. Dmitry Zmeev, who led the research team, said: “Our results are significant because we found that the clamping arrangement between the LEGO ® blocks causes the LEGO ® structures to behave as an extremely good thermal insulator at cryogenic temperatures.

“This is very desirable for construction materials used for the design of future scientific equipment like dilution refrigerators.”

Invented 50 years ago, the dilution refrigerator is at the center of a global multi-billion dollar industry and is crucial to the work of modern experimental physics and engineering, including the development of quantum computers.

The use of ABS plastic structures, such as LEGO ®, instead of the solid materials currently in use, means that any future thermal insulator could be produced at a significantly reduced cost.

Researchers say the next step is to design and 3D print a new thermal insulator for the next generation of dilution refrigerators.

Scientists Observe Type 2 Diabetes Develop for the First Time

Caused by Overspill of FatBy NEWCASTLE UNIVERSITY DECEMBER 22, 2019For the first time, scientists have been able to observe people

developing Type 2 diabetes — and confirmed that fat over-spills from the liver into the pancreas, triggering the chronic condition.

The research, led by Professor Roy Taylor at Newcastle University, UK, is published in the academic journal, Cell Metabolism.

The study involved a group of people from Tyneside who previously had Type 2 diabetes but had lost weight and successfully reversed the condition as part of the DiRECT trial, which was funded by Diabetes UK and led by Professors Roy Taylor and Mike Lean (Glasgow University).

The majority remained non-diabetic for the rest of the two year study, however, a small group went on to re-gain the weight and re-developed Type 2 diabetes.

Professor Roy Taylor, from the Newcastle University Institute of Translational and Clinical Research, explained what the advanced scanning techniques and blood monitoring revealed.

He said: “We saw that when a person accumulates too much fat, which should be stored under the skin, then it has to go elsewhere in the body. The amount that can be stored under

the skin varies from person to person, indicating a ‘personal fat threshold’ above which fat can cause mischief.

“When fat cannot be safely stored under the skin, it is then stored inside the liver, and over-spills to the rest of the body including the pancreas. This ‘clogs up’ the pancreas, switching off the genes which direct how insulin should effectively be produced, and this causes Type 2 diabetes.”

This research by Professor Taylor confirms his Twin Cycle Hypothesis — that Type 2 diabetes is caused by excess fat actually within both the liver and pancreas, and especially that this process is reversible.

Body of researchThis latest paper builds on previous Newcastle studies

supported by Diabetes UK showing exactly why Type 2 diabetes can be reversed back to normal glucose control. Those studies led to the large DiRECT trial which showed that Primary Care staff can achieve remission of Type 2 diabetes by using a low calorie diet with support to maintain the weight loss.

A quarter of participants achieved a staggering 15 kg or more weight loss, and of these, almost nine out of 10 people put their Type 2 diabetes into remission. After two years, more than one third of the group had been free of diabetes and off all diabetes medication for at least two years.

In 2020, this approach to management of short duration Type 2 diabetes is to be piloted in the NHS in up to 5,000 people across England, and a similar program is being rolled out in Scotland.

Professor Taylor adds: “This means we can now see Type 2 diabetes as a simple condition where the individual has accumulated more fat than they can cope with.

“Importantly this means that through diet and persistence, patients are able to lose the fat and potentially reverse their diabetes. The sooner this is done after diagnosis, the more likely it is that remission can be achieved.”

The team are continuing work to establish what may affect an individual’s personal threshold and are supporting the roll out of the NHS Initiatives in both England and Scotland.

CHAPTER 17 THE ORK RESCUES BUTTON-BRIGHT

“I wonder,” said Button-Bright, looking solemnly after the Ork, “whether he’ll ever come back again.”

“Of course he will!” returned Trot. “The Ork’s a pretty good fellow, and we can depend on him. An’ mark my words, Button-Bright, whenever our Ork does come back, there’s one cruel King in Jinxland that’ll wish he hadn’t.”

CHAPTER 18 THE SCARECROW MEETS AN ENEMY

The Scarecrow was not a bit afraid of King Krewl. Indeed, he rather enjoyed the prospect of conquering the evil King and putting Gloria on the throne of Jinxland in his place. So he advanced boldly to the royal castle and demanded admittance.

Seeing that he was a stranger, the soldiers allowed him to enter. He made his way straight to the throne room, where at that time his Majesty was settling the disputes among his subjects. “Who are you?” demanded the King.

“I’m the Scarecrow of Oz, and I command you to surrender yourself my prisoner.”

“Why should I do that?” inquired the King, much astonished at the straw man’s audacity.

“Because I’ve decided you are too cruel a King to rule so beautiful a country. You must remember that Jinxland is a part of Oz, and therefore you owe allegiance to Ozma of Oz, whose friend and servant I am.”

Now when he heard this, King Krewl was much disturbed in mind, for he knew the Scarecrow spoke the truth. But no one had ever before come to Jinxland from the Land of Oz, and the King did not intend to be put out of his throne if he could help it. Therefore he gave a harsh, wicked laugh of derision and said, “I’m busy now. Stand out of my way, Scarecrow, and I’ll talk with you by and by.”

But the Scarecrow turned to the assembled courtiers and people and called in a loud voice, “I hereby declare, in the name of Ozma of Oz, that this man is no longer ruler of Jinxland. From this moment Princess Gloria is your rightful Queen, and I ask all of you to be loyal to her and to obey her commands.”

The people looked fearfully at the King, whom they all hated in their hearts, but likewise feared. Krewl was now in a terrible rage, and he raised his golden scepter and struck the Scarecrow so heavy a blow that he fell to the floor. But he was up again in an instant, and with Pon’s riding whip he switched the King so hard that the wicked monarch roared with pain as much as with rage, calling on his soldiers to capture the Scarecrow. They tried to do that, and thrust their lances and swords into the straw body, but without doing any damage except to make holes in the Scarecrow’s clothes. However, they were many against one, and finally old Googly-Goo brought a rope which he wound around the Scarecrow, binding his legs together and his arms to his sides, and after that the fight was over.

The King stormed and danced around in a dreadful fury, for he had never been so switched since he was a boy--and perhaps not then. He ordered the Scarecrow thrust into the castle prison, which was no task at all because one man could carry him easily, bound as he was. Even after the prisoner was removed, the King could not control his anger. He tried to figure out some way to be revenged upon the straw man, but could think of nothing that could hurt him. At last, when the terrified people and the frightened courtiers had all slunk away, old Googly-Goo approached the king with a malicious grin upon his face. “I’ll tell you what to do,” said he. “Build a big bonfire and burn the Scarecrow up, and that will be the end of him.”

The King was so delighted with this suggestion that he hugged old Googly-Goo in his joy. “Of course!” he cried. “The very thing. Why did I not think of it myself?”

So he summoned his soldiers and retainers and bade them prepare a great bonfire in an open space in the castle park. Also, he sent word to all his people to assemble and witness the destruction of the Scarecrow, who had dared to defy his power. Before long, a vast throng gathered in the park and the servants had heaped up enough fuel to make a fire that might be seen for miles away, even in the daytime. When all was prepared, the King had his throne brought out for him to sit upon and enjoy the spectacle, and then he sent his soldiers to fetch the Scarecrow.

Now the one thing in all the world that the straw man really feared was fire. He knew he would burn very easily and that his ashes wouldn’t amount to much afterward. It wouldn’t

hurt him to be destroyed in such a manner, but he realized that many people in the Land of Oz, and especially Dorothy and the Royal Ozma, would feel sad if they learned that their old friend the Scarecrow was no longer in existence. In spite of this, the straw man was brave and faced his fiery fate like a hero. When they marched him out before the concourse of people, he turned to the King with great calmness and said, “This wicked deed will cost you your throne as well as much suffering, for my friends will avenge my destruction.”

“Your friends are not here, nor will they know what I have done to you when you are gone and cannot tell them,” answered the King in a scornful voice. Then he ordered the Scarecrow bound to a stout stake that he had had driven into the ground, and the materials for the fire were heaped all around him. When this had been done, the King’s brass band struck up a lively tune, and old Googly-Goo came forward with a lighted match and set fire to the pile. At once the flames shot up and crept closer and closer toward the Scarecrow. The King and all the people were so intent upon this terrible spectacle that none of then noticed how the sky grew suddenly dark. Perhaps they thought that the loud buzzing sound--like the noise of a dozen moving railway trains--came from the blazing faggots, that the rush of wind was merely a breeze. But suddenly, down swept a flock of Orks, half a hundred of them at the least, and the powerful currents of air caused by their revolving tails sent the bonfire scattering in every direction, so that not one burning strand ever touched the Scarecrow.

But that was not the only effect of this sudden tornado. King Krewl was blown out of his throne and went tumbling heels over head until he landed with a bump against the stone wall of his own castle, and before he could rise, a big Ork sat upon him and held him pressed to the ground. Old Googly-Goo shot up into the air like a rocket and landed on a tree, where he hung by the middle on a high limb, kicking the air with his feet and clawing the air with his hands and howling for mercy like the coward he was.

The people pressed back until they were jammed close together, while all the soldiers were knocked over and sent sprawling to the earth. The excitement was great for a few minutes, and every frightened inhabitant of Jinxland looked with awe and amazement at the great Orks whose descent had served to rescue the Scarecrow and conquer King Krewl at one and the same time.
