WESTMEAD CONGREGATION

Happy Birthday to you Happy Birthday Open Door.

Can you believe it but Open Door has been going for 15 years. It was wonderful to have a birthday cake which was cut and other really nice food. (We usually have wonderful food anyway). And a special Happy Mother’s day to all of the mothers, grandmothers and everyone who has acted in a way of mothering others! The time is coming very soon when we will be practising for the Mayflower Concert which will be on the 21st May. The Music was made available on Sunday 1st May and we will have a quick talk through on Mother’s Day with practice on the 15th May. As the songs are well known we do not think there will be too many issues. We anticipate this will be a fun morning with the people at Mayflower village. It is great to have Rev Christine back after Synod and 2 weeks holidays. Synod was a busy time with some great opportunities to meet with people from across NSW and ACT. There were some important things that were talked about and the next Insights will identify many of these things. The Open space at Synod enabled people to raise an issue that they were concerned about then gather in small groups to talk about it so more will be talked about in Insights. Rev Christine was very glad to hear that worship had been wonderful while she was away to thanks to all involved.

John 17:20-26 (Jesus, lifted up his eyes to heaven, said) “Not for these only do I pray, but also for all who will believe in me through their word, 21 in order that they may all be one, even as you, Father, are in me and I am in you, that they may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 But the glory which you have given me I have given to them that they may be one even as we are one, 23 I in them and you in me that they may be perfected into one that the world may know that you have sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. 24 Father, for those whom you have given me I desire that where I am they also may be with me, that they may see my glory which you have given to me because you did love me before the foundation of the world. 25 O righteous Father, the world has not known you, but I have known you; and these have known that you have sent me. 26 I have made known to them your name and I will make it known, that the love with which you have loved me may be in them and I in them.” (Translation by Keith Hamilton)

Mother’s Day has a fascinating history.

The earliest Mother's Day celebrations can be traced to the spring celebrations of ancient Greece in honour of Rhea, the Mother of the Gods. During the 1600's, England honoured mothers on "Mothering Sunday", held two Sundays before Easter. The servants would have the day off and were encouraged to return home and spend the day with their mothers. A special cake, called the mothering cake, provided a festive touch. Julia Ward Howe started Mother’s Day Clubs during the American civil war, gathering women from both sides of the conflict to help those who were injured, and orphaned, and work for peace. She first suggested a national Mother’s Day in 1870 as a day dedicated to peace and conflict resolution. In 1907 Ana Jarvis, from Philadelphia, began a campaign to establish a national Mother's Day. Ana Jarvis persuaded her mother's Methodist Episcopal church to celebrate Mother's Day on the second anniversary of her mother's death, the 2nd Sunday of May. Her mother, also named Ana Jarvis, had worked in the Mother’s Day clubs during and after the civil war. Ana and her supporters wrote to ministers, business people, and politicians in their quest to establish a national Mother's Day. By 1911 Mother's Day was celebrated in almost every USA State. The US congress passed the day, and President Woodrow Wilson, in 1914 proclaimed Mother's Day as a national holiday to be held each year on the 2nd Sunday of May. Australian, Janet Heyden of Leichhardt, started the tradition of giving gifts with a campaign in 1924 to collect gifts for lonely aged mothers. This led to Mother’s Day being widely celebrated in Australia.

Reflection

My family has good news to share. My daughter and son-in-law are expecting their first child at the end of June. The baby will be the first grandchild for part of my extended family. The usual preparations are in hand with knitting garments and purchasing of items and fit-out of a bedroom. It is good news. I also can’t help but recall of a pregnant woman coming into Meals Plus, who had spent the night sleeping under a bridge here in Parramatta. Indeed, over the eight years I have been at PM, I have heard about and met a number of women who were homeless and pregnant, and as the nights become cooler, and I put on more clothes to keep me warm on my early morning walk, I also think of women and men and youths who have spent the night exposed to the elements. The budget has been brought down, and the opposition reply made. We know we are having an election on 2 July. Promises have been made and more will be made. But are we doing all that we can to assist young mothers, children, as well as people who find themselves on the streets this autumn? The bottom line of any and every relationship is treating each other with extravagant generosity, i.e. love. On some level we are all in relationship dependent on each other and influencing each other, even people we have never met. The love with which the writer of John’s gospel speaks is a self-giving love that works towards engaging with people and creating community. When Jesus speaks of love, we must always remember that he demonstrated that in the foot washing – serving others – and then gave the commandment to love as he has loved. This practical demonstration of love will be a witness to others that people are friends with God. We celebrate with women for whom this is their first Mother’s Day, and remember mums no longer with us. We remember mums whose children predeceased them. We also remember women who never became a mother even though they wanted to, and those who chose not to. Of course, a woman’s worth is not because she is a mum, but because women and men, children, old and young alike are all loved by God with the same love that God had for Jesus. As we celebrate Mother’s Day, giving thanks for those who mothered us, we are also reminded to treat mum well every day, not just today. Blessings to all and to all mums this Mother’s Day, Keith Hamilton
