GLANCEJEWISH CAMP FAIR 2011
IT’S NOT TOO EARLY TO BE THINKING SUMMER!Looking for a first-time camp experience? Looking for a Jewish overnight camp, but don’t know the differences? Lookingfor a summer camp job? If the answer to any of these questions is “yes,” the Jewish Camp Fair 2011 is the place to be onSunday, January 30, from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at Temple Emanuel, 12166 Conway Rd. It is free and open to the public. There will be representatives from the following types of programs:
Day camps in St. Louis (including Jewish preschool camps)
Jewish overnight camps from throughout the country spanning the entire religious and ideological spectrum
Teen programs including national travel programs, trips to Israel, Jewish studies programs and other unique and specialized offerings
Programs and information for children with special needs
 Staff recruitment
The Fair is organized by Tips on Trips and Camps (www.TipsonTripsandCamps.com), a camp referral service with 40years in the camping industry. Jenny Wolkowitz, Midwest Consultant for Tips on Trips, said, “This annual event gives St.Louis families an opportunity to meet directors from a variety of Jewish summer camp experiences. What better way tomake your summer decision!”
Summer seems far away, but planning ahead may save valuable money in this tight economy. Wolkowitz agrees, “Manycamps offer early bird discounts, so this fair comes at an ideal time. In today’s economy, every little bit helps!”
The first 50 families through the door will receive a bright red Tips on Trips and Camps re-useable grocery bag. If youwould like to talk about camps and other summer options before January, contact Jenny Wolkowitz at 314-432-8642 oremail at [email protected].

IF NOT NOW, WHEN?Rabbi Amy Feder
Though I have been in my new position for several
months now, there are still “firsts” that I’m
experiencing and looking forward to every day. Next
week I’m taking my first official tour of the Temple
building. (It does strike me as rather funny that after
31 years of TI membership, I still haven’t seen the
entire building.) I’m particularly curious to see the
roof, though rumor has it that there’s a life-size
cutout of Rabbi Shook in the basement that has
spooked quite a few people taking the 50-cent tour
over the years!
Today was another first. I just came from the most
fantastic experience with the Rabbi’s Roundtable.
The first Thursday of every month, a group of
congregants come together for a delicious lunch and
to ask the rabbi whatever questions are on their
mind. I must admit, I was a little nervous going in. I
had Rabbi Alper prep me on the latest hot news
stories, and I spent time pouring over the Jerusalem
Post just in case there were some tough questions
about Israel. But in the end, it turned out to be a
lively discussion about everything from collaboration
with United Hebrew to the absence of Jewish life in
modern day Ireland. It was a wonderful, low cost way
to build community, learn a little, and socialize with
friends new and old.
It strikes me that Temple Israel has many groups and
events like this of which people just aren’t aware.
You may not know about our vibrant weekly Bible
Study class on Saturday mornings, or our Sunday
Series for adult learning that meets during religious school.
Our October Sunday Series classes had people sitting in the
hall because the room was so packed! You may not know of
our different chavurot (social groups) or our new,
participatory style of worship. You may not know that every
day of the week our doors are open, whether you’d like to
join a program or sit in the quiet May Chapel for some
personal time. There is so much to do and experience at TI,
and I only wish we could make sure all our members knew
about all of the opportunities.
If you’re reading this article, chances are I’m preaching to
the choir. But if you or someone you know isn’t quite sure
of what the Temple has to offer, please call me and I’ll be
happy to find the right place for you! You can also sign up
to receive our weekly e-newsletter that goes out every
Monday. Send us your e-mail address and we will ensure
that you receive all of the latest breaking news. You know
as well as I do that we are living in interesting times. Who
knows what story will break next!
So drop on by, give us a call, or send us an e-mail. In the
meantime, join me for Rabbi’s Roundtable on the first
Thursday of each month at 12:30 p.m. …and just give me a
little warning if you’re planning on asking a really tough
question.

CHUTZPAH Rabbi Michael Alper
Inspiration sometimes comes from perspiration. Thissummer, while cleaning out the space that would becomemy new office, I came upon a book I’d seen before but neverreally took the time to read in depth. Many of you may havea copy of the History of Temple Israel 1886-1996. It maynot exactly be a page turner along the lines of the DaVinciCode, but I would recommend exploring it. One sectionwithin it is titled “Brotherhood.” This chapter, written by ourcongregant Harry Offenbach, explains the manyincarnations of Temple Israel’s fraternal organizationsbeginning with the “Men’s Club” and its assent as afounding chapter of the National Federation of TempleBrotherhoods. Over time, though, the strength and numbersof our Brotherhood dwindled. Ultimately, Temple Israel’sBrotherhood disappeared.
Temple Brotherhoods were once the backbone of manyNorth American congregations. These groups socialized, helped affect change in the immigrant population, andcreated stability and security within the greater Jewishcommunity. Like all Jewish groups though, Brotherhood wasswept up by the winds of history. Its place became tenuousin a religious environment that had rapidly changed. Inrecent generations, many men have grown to find adifferent understanding regarding the demands ofmarriage, gender roles, parenting, synagogue life andcommunity obligations than their paternal fathers andgrandfathers. Today, there is simply less leisure time forfamilies, rising costs of living and education, and a growingdistrust of large institutions, particularly synagogues.
The quickly evolving socio-economic landscape of the lastfew decades has accelerated the process of menwithdrawing from Jewish fraternal groups even more so. Inliberal synagogues, women have come to fill many, if not allof the traditional roles that men have held in synagogue lifefor centuries. This change is a blessing, to be sure, but inmany cases it seems that for various reasons many menincreasingly withdrew from Temple life around the sametime. Liberal synagogues are not alone in facing anincreasing gender gap. In David Murrow’s book, Why MenHate Going to Church, he explains, “Today, many churchgoing women with families regularly attend services withouttheir husbands… The typical American church-goer is awoman.”
Yet I believe that at Temple Israel, as in othercommunities across America, the pendulum isshifting. Blame it on the economic depression or jobloss; explain it as a post-modern revolt or a spiritualrevival; the changes in the social landscape ofAmerican Jewish life have shifted yet again andcreated an open space for Jewish experience. Whilemany men have felt out of place in a synagogue andas a part of synagogue life, they now long toreconnect to their Jewish community, their Jewishmentors and friends. I believe that liberal Jewishinstitutions have let many men down, but beforedismissing the synagogue as irrelevant, timeconsuming and boring, we should ask ourselves whywe feel this way and what we can do about it.
It is precisely the expertise and spirit of fraternitythat congregations need. This paradox has alwaysexisted throughout the Jewish experience, but it isparticularly relevant today. As Jewish men and asmen in Jewish interfaith families, we long to connectto one another as fathers and sons and brothers andfriends more than ever before. Though our time islimited and our responsibilities are ever present, asmen, we still need one another. We need to seek outwisdom and comfort and companionship so that wecan create a confident, caring community of men andwomen. Therefore, I have decided to reorganizeTemple Israel’s Brotherhood with a new name for anew era: The Misterhood.
Temple Israel is more in need of congregationalgroups like Brotherhood today than ever before. In aculture that worships youth and the novelty of newthings, let’s look back for a moment to an institutionwhose time has come again. It would do us all well toremember the teachings of our “Avot,” ourgrandfathers and teachers and the men who raisedus. As Harry Offenbach wrote, “The history ofBrotherhood can not be recounted only in terms ofmoney raised, activities fostered, past or presentevents. The spirit of Brotherhood lives in itscontribution to the warmth and love of Temple life, toits embracing of new members, to its creation of anextended family within its participants…” May his wishbe renewed and may we see a new Brotherhoodemerge within our congregation. If you’re interestedin being a part of our new organization, pleasecontact me!

NOTING
Editor’s Note: Jacob Mogerman, son of Cary and Dee Mogerman, is currently in Israel for six months
in a program called Yahel Social Change. He and his group are living and working in the Ethiopian
community in the town of Gedera, south of Tel Aviv, teaching English and music and volunteering in
the community. Cary and Dee had travelled to Israel with Rabbi Shook two years ago and visited
our friends at Congregation YOZMA. The Mogermans were the guests of the Brucker family for
Shabbat and the two families have maintained a friendship ever since that visit. Jacob recently
visited the Bruckers in Modi-in. He reflects on his experience with the YOZMA community here.
The Yozma synagogue in Modi-in was an interesting
place, especially in Israel. It represents a leap for the
establishment of liberal Judaism in the state. Iit is the
first non-Orthodox shul to receive government funding.
I was spending a weekend with the Bruker family, who
moved to Modi-in eight years ago and met my parents
when they were visiting Israel.
Efi Bruker is very involved at the synagogue and helps
the rabbis with various things during the service,
including setting up and closing afterwards. The
sanctuary was warm and bright. The floors and walls
were white, the bima an interesting structure of light
blue, and overall very welcoming. There was a tour
group that particular night and the rabbis prepared for
it. The rabbi translated his entire sermon beforehand
and distributed English copies to those that needed
them.
The service experience was refreshing and a bit surreal.
Every other service I have been to so far was Orthodox,
so suddenly seeing guitars and singing songs I know
from back home was transforming in a way. Further,
praying side-by-side with women again was comforting,
as that is unheard of elsewhere in Israel. As Yozma is a
Reform congregation, like other Reform congregations
around the world, the service takes place in the local
language. So juxtaposed between familiar prayers and
songs were comments and passages in Hebrew that I am
only just now beginning to understand.
The particular Shabbat that I attended happened to be the
final Shabbat before the rabbi's daughter went into the
army, so it was very emotional. The whole congregation,
even the tour group, felt the connection and experienced
something we were not prepared for. The image of the
rabbi giving the Priestly blessing of well-being to his own
daughter is a moment I will cherish. Even more significant
to me was that after this emotional service, everyone
approached me and welcomed me to Modi-in. The warmth I
felt there is in some ways a stark contrast to other
experiences that I have had here. In other shuls, friends of
those I attended with greeted me, but others went about
their business. Everyone in this shul greeted me warmly
and made me feel at home.

We are having so much fun here at DECC. Our recent
Open House with Dave Simon and his KIDZROCK
band was phenomenal. There were so many parents
checking out all of the cool activities that are taking
place in our classrooms! Then we “rocked the house”
as we sang and danced along with Dave Simon. It
was so awesome to see so many new families come
together for this event. We continue to build our
DECC community one family at a time.
All of the children at DECC also worked so hard on
learning to sing and sign the Shema prayer as part of
their special gift to Rabbi Amy and Rabbi Michael
during the installation Shabbat service. It was an
incredibly moving moment for our entire Temple
family to see our young children participating in this
very special celebration.
Who can believe that it is already December! We
finished up the month of November with our
traditional DECC Thanksgiving feasts. The teachers
all did a super job of explaining Thanksgiving and
talking about the things that we have in our lives to
be thankful for. The children discovered that they are
very fortunate to have many things to be thankful for
and at the top of their list were Mommy and Daddy! I
would have to agree that DECC has the most
supportive parents that anyone could ask for! You
are what makes this school so wonderful and I am
also extremely appreciative of all you do, not only for
your children, but for DECC as well. It is because of
your love and support that DECC has grown into a vibrant
preschool of more than 90 children.
This time of year also brings us to our Hanukah celebration
and to our Jewish value of the month for December, which
is tzedakah. We celebrate Hanukah by lighting the menorah
for eight nights. This signifies the miracle of the oil lasting
for eight nights when in reality, there was only enough for
one night! December is a time of miracles. We have so
many little miracles in our lives – your children. Each day
they do or say something that is so fascinating! We can also
be the miracle in someone else’s life by giving tzedakah to
those who are less fortunate than us. There are all kinds of
ways to give; just pick something that is meaningful to your
family. Teach your children the love of giving; it is a trait
that if learned early will serve them well for their entire
lives.
Students show off their classrooms to their parents during the recent DECC Open House.

EDUCATION CENTERDeborah Morosohk, R.J.E., Director of Education
In the year 168 BCE, in the city of Modi-in Israel, a priest
named Mattathias refused to bow down to Greek idols and
began a Jewish revolt against Antiochus and the Greek
Syrians. The Maccabees fought for three long years until
they finally drove Antiochus’ soldiers out of Jerusalem and
took back the Holy Temple. The rededication of the Temple
is celebrated at Hanukah each year, and it all started in
Modi-in.
This Hanukah, we will welcome some very special guests
from the modern Israeli city of Modi-in. Our guests from
Congregation Yozma are also rebels – of a sort. Their
Reform congregation is at the forefront of the fight in Israel
to protect the rights of Progressive Judaism. Congregation
Yozma was the first non-Orthodox congregation in Israel to
win the support of government funds. Their fight to receive
those funds went all the way to the Israeli Supreme Court.
Temple Israel has been building a relationship with the
people of Yozma for almost three years, and we are so
excited to be hosting them this Hanukah. There will be
opportunities to celebrate Shabbat and Hanukah with them
and to study with them, as well as plenty of time to
schmooze and get to know them personally. I hope that
many of you will take advantage of this opportunity for
sharing and making personal connections.

2010JEWISH ATTENTION TO MENTAL ILLNESS
There is a tremendous hesitancy in the Jewish
community to talk about mental illness when it concerns
someone in our family. If you are facing a situation
where a child, spouse, parent, or friend is suffering from
a mental illness, there is a new source of support in the
Jewish community. Jewish Attention to Mental Illness,
(JAMI) has been established to try to be of some help.
It has been estimated that as many as 20 percent of
Jewish families in St. Louis have been affected by
mental illness. We are not reluctant to talk about cancer
in our families but when it comes to mental illness, we
tend to hide it. JAMI is a support group made up of
families who have a loved one suffering with this illness.
Contact Neil Marglous at [email protected] to learn
more about our group and when we have scheduled our
next family support group meeting.

November was great, lots of fun was had,
We built bears together, and that wasn’t bad!
Then our Trivia Night was attended by many,
With all that hard work we earned a pretty penny.
Our lock-in was great, thanks to all who helped plan,
I know all who attended are big TIFTY fans!
So December’s upon us, and there’s much fun to come,
JYGJunior Youth Group Temple Israel
JYGers joined with TIFTY and Club 56 for a mitzvah project
on Nov. 7 to make bears at Build-A-Bear Workshop for the
Jewish Family and Children’s Service’s Hanukah Hugs
program. Our youth groupers had a great time and felt very
good about knowing that they were helping kids from
families in need receive very special handmade gifts from
the heart. We enjoy doing this project every year. Hopefully
next year even more youth groupers will be able to join us
so that we can help even more kids receive bears.
TIFTY members attended the SLIID Fall conclave in Peoria, Illinois along with other youth groupsfrom throughout the Midwest.

So join us, please, we can’t wait to see you.
And another fun month with TIFTY will be through!

CLUB 565th and 6th Grade Youth Group
The 5th and 6th grade students in Club 56 have been doing
some amazing acts of tikkun olam (repairing our world). In
October we went with our families to the new Ronald
McDonald House to serve dinner to the families staying there.
Everyone had a great time and really enjoyed touring the
center and meeting the families. Then on November 7 we
spent the afternoon at Build-A-Bear Workshop making
adorable animals — not for ourselves — but to give away
through the Hanukah Hugs program.
Club 56 also participating in the Installation Weekend for our
rabbis. We presented Rabbi Feder and Rabbi Alper with a
special gift of a Hamsa sculpture that was made by all three
youth groups. All of the Club 56ers who helped to make the
Hamsa should really feel proud. The rabbis loved the gift!
We’re also very proud of Teddy Vincent, who was one of the
presenters of another beautiful gift to the rabbis from the
religious school. Mazel Tov!
Starting in January, Club 56 will be ready for some fun!
Please stay tuned for all the excitment we have in store!

Specialist at the Jewish Family and Children’s Service’s
ElderLink St. Louis program. In the last five years
she has become increasingly involved with helping
her mother through the challenges, medical issues,
and decisions related to aging.
The session will also include a quick pie-baking
demonstration by Mermelstein using her own
favorite yellow pie plate. Everyone attending the
workshop will get to sample her homemade pie at

NOTINGDEAR FELLOW TI MEMBERS,
Thank you for making the Rabbis' Installation weekend
truly special. Without your help and support the
spectacular weekend would not have been so
successful. Temple Israel is a wonderful, vibrant, caring
community, as evidenced by the number of congregants
who eagerly volunteered to contribute their time and
resources toward this weekend. Just look at the lists of
volunteers and donors in this DATELINE and you will
see what a true community effort this was.
Most of all, thank you for attending and taking part in
this wonderful weekend. More than 500 congregants
and guests attended our Friday night service of
installation and a capacity crowd of 800 enjoyed
Debbie Friedman’s concert on Saturday night.
As our Rabbis noted during the service, we are truly “a
family of families.” Temple Israel is lucky to have Rabbi
Feder and Rabbi Alper and to have congregants who
care as much as you all do.
Thank you for helping to make the Rabbis' Installation
Weekend memorable!

Co-Chairs, Installation Weekend Celebration
INSTALLATIONWEEKEND WITHDEBBIE FRIEDMANOur Installation Weekend November 5-6 with special
guest Debbie Friedman was a big success. More than
500 congregants and guests attended the Friday night
Shabbat service and installation and a capacity crowd of
800 enjoyed the community concert by Debbie
Friedman on Saturday night.
For Friday night’s Shabbat service, Debbie Friedman led
the congregation in song. The installation ceremony was
led by a minyan of 10 congregants who were selected to
represent the rich diversity of our congregation.
Participating in the ceremony were Temple President
David Weinstein, Amy Cohen, Evelyn Bernstein, Pamela
Dern, Henry Mann, Harry Offenbach, Beth Deutsch, Carol
Rubin, Yale Hollander and JoAnne Levy.
Another highlight of the evening was the presentation of
special handmade gifts to the rabbis by students in our
preschool, religious school and youth groups.
Saturday night’s concert "rocked the house" and literally
had people dancing in the aisles. Friedman also
recognized the extraordinary musical talent within our
congregation, graciously sharing the stage for several
numbers with Tracy Fishbein, Rob Aronson, Andrew
Terkel, and Rabbis Feder and Alper.
The success of the weekend was the result of the
tremendous support we received from our sponsors,
donors and numerous volunteers. Our sincere thanks go
to Adele Lewis and Stephanie Rhea, Installation
Weekend Co-Chairs, who worked tirelessly to coordinate
the many details involved in putting together the
weekend.
DECC students sing and sign the Shema during the Installation Shabbat Service for Rabbi Feder and Rabbi Alper.
