“Dill Piccolini: An exceedingly small wind instrument that plays only sour notes”

Library Update by Teresa Cerling, Library Manager

Greetings from the library! I am happy to report the library is doing well this year. We received a generous bequest from a former Chatfield resident, Alice Underleak Whitford. We have invested this in the expectation of using the interest to help pay for salary increases for the staff.

The library received another generous anonymous donation this year. This money was used to keep our two catalogers, Kirby Johnson and Valerie Wilson, on the payroll. They have added over 1900 new titles over the past year.

I want to thank the volunteers that helped with the annual fall cleanup at the library and the volunteers that came throughout the year to help with sorting music. We couldn’t do it without you!

2015 Accomplishments:

• 1900 new titles cataloged

• 542 volunteer hours

• 255 new and renewing members

• Orders to 50 states and 15 foreign countries

Some favorite titles found in our collection this year:

Cows May Come and Cows May Go, but the Bull Will Go

on Forever

That’s the Fellow I Want to Get — Intro: My Husband’s

Going [to] Leave Me, but the Boarder’s Going to Stay

Please consider making a contribution. We will use your dollars well. We are dedicated to getting more of this old music off the shelf and into the files and online catalog. This is our mission — to make this music available!

The Song Without a Name (© 1930)

It'll Take a Little Time (© 1932) by Beth Hennessy, Library Clerk

I’ve been working for the Chatfield Music Lending Library for almost six years. It’s been fun getting to know so many of you and helping you locate the music you want. I’ve spent time researching five-piece German band music, music by James Reese Europe, and many, many other topics you bring to my attention. I often wish I had more time to do that kind of work — it’s fascinating to see what’s out there and what we actually have in our collection. I see new and interesting titles on a daily basis (some of which end up as new parodies for my women’s

quartet, The Rhubarb Sisters).

When I can spend time on the phone, I love hearing your stories of working with your own bands and your history of playing music. But, truth be told, I have very little time available to just chat or do research. I rarely have a day when I don’t have a list of requests to be filled (we like this — keep those requests coming)! Since all our music has been donated and previously used, sometimes a lot has to be done to get a piece ready to send to you.

I have logged many hours with my handy dandy eraser and have wished all musicians knew about #2 pencils rather than ink or highlighters! Since we never send out our final original, some music requires a lot of time at the copy machine (trying to best fit music for copying on standard-size sheets of paper). And then even more time is spent taping multiple-paged parts together.

I also open the mail each day. I have opened packages of returned music and wished that our postal service had the funds to do a better job delivering mail to people in all areas of the country and world. Much is being automated these days and packages sometimes get mauled by machines. We have received packages that are lucky to have any parts remaining inside (please be careful and package things well when you return items). Some arrive with most of the parts missing. Some don’t make it at all.

We also hope you will be understanding about delivery times. Due to the closing of many sorting facilities, it is taking longer for mail to be delivered. We have reports of first class mail taking as long as two weeks to arrive. For just a few dollars more, it might be worth asking us to send things by Priority Mail (estimated delivery time is two days). The flat rate legal-size envelopes can fit most sets of concert-size music (sometimes even two sets) and only cost $5.25 for postage.

Thanks to all of you for continuing to use our services. We love helping you locate music to share with your own communities!

A few examples of the music in our BOA

(Band orchestra arrangement) collection.

More Than Washington Post By Glen Tuomaala

Have you lost track of the number of times you’ve

played (or conducted) The Washington Post? You’re not alone. Written in 1889 by John Philip Sousa, it’s considered one of the best marches he ever composed, but there are dozens of other newspaper marches that you may have never discovered.

At the turn of the century, the American newspaper was a primary source of information. Having a newspaper in your town showed the world that it was a great place to live, and having more than one newspaper was a point of pride. This pride often created the opportunity for composers to create a march, quick-step, polka or dance for their newspaper.

As newspapers continue to vanish, their music remains (many examples of which are available at the Chatfield Music Lending Library). This is a partial list (A-N) of newspaper marches, but if you know of one or more that we may have forgotten, PLEASE send an email with that correction to: [email protected]

Sarrusophone

The sarrusophone is essentially a metal bassoon, the design of which borrowed heavily from saxophone design. Like the saxophone, sarrusophones came in sizes from sopranino through contrabass, but only the contrabass became popular. They are still made in Italy, and although they have been considered obsolete for 80 years or so, they are having a bit of a revival. Pictured is the University of Illinois Band's sarrusophone section from 1942. Included are soprano, alto, tenor, baritone, bass, and contrabass sarrusophones.
