Hannah Kidd’s “Beastly Delights” at Aigantighe Art Gallery, Timaru (until 27 February, 2011)

features key works from the last three years.

In that time Hannah Kidd has risen to national prominence and international success. Her

work is compellingly distinctive and possesses an authentic rural voice.

Kidd demonstrates in every work a vast array of technical and engineering skills. Her work

traverses portraiture, event and circumstance, building persuasive, focused, narratives.

“Happy Camper” (2008) has a smiling man displaying the reward of his sporting

endeavours. “Common Kotuku” (2008) paradoxically contrasts two white herons

squabbling over a small fish on the ubiquitous plastic chair. “Weekend Warrior” (2010) sees

a wet-suited figure, holding a crayfish in each hand. Kidd’s virtuosity and ability to sculpt

anything with representational aplomb is demonstrated in each work.

Kidd brings to her subjects insider’s observation and outsider’s detachment. “Delphine and

Beatrix Buttercup the 3rd” (2010) encapsulates humour, fact and event, achieving the status

of exacting social comment. The plurality achieved in this work means we know it can be

located in Remuera or Methven without any loss of relevance or meaning.

Kidd is no apologist for rural NZ, nor one championing a rural arcadia. Her work has content

informed by what goes on and how it happens. Her sculpture is attuned to important

environmental debates and the breadth of her concerns can be seen in the suite of works

“Highlights from the Museum” (2009) where she presents extinct animals as trophies and

potent reminders of what has been so easily lost we at first think we recognise them.

“Cow Cocky” (2008) is a remarkable work. A stoic farmer, arms crossed, gum booted feet

planted apart, watches, waiting for the cow to stop licking a teat. The unerring accuracy of

this work is accompanied by insightful humour and courageous contradiction.

“Great Rack” (2008) is unmistakably a major work. Kidd’s ability to deliver the physical

reality of the stag is matched by an unequalled capacity to present its animal nature. The

stag watches back and an undercurrent of threat emerges from the black sockets of its

eyes and the caverns of its nostrils.

Hannah Kidd’s first exhibition at a public institution conclusively establishes that she is a key

figure in contemporary NZ sculpture, possessing a unique voice and delivering content of

very real importance.

HANNAH KIDD b. 1979, lives Franz Joseph

Artist to Antarctica (2009)

Franz Josef based sculptor Hannah Kidd predominantly crafts and welds sculptural creations

from steel rod and corrugated iron as a means to investigate people and the relationships they

have with their surrounding environment. “Kidd’s works remind us we are New Zealanders and

explore our relationships with each other and our environments”. (1)

Kidd’s subject matter has focused on witty and often comical animal studies which she has used

as a vehicle to discuss the human condition.

“Kidd’s works are covered with flat tin, spot-welded, and remarkably detailed, notwithstanding

their clear origins in bits of roofing iron. She will take on any living subject, from humans to horses.”

(2) Hannah Kidd has quickly risen to critical acclaim and her distinctive and unique work has been

exhibited around the world, from Australia to Denmark including “I’m sure I’ve seen that before”,

Vienna, Austria (2002), Sculpture By the Sea, Sydney (2007) Sculpture By the Sea, Denmark (2009),

Sculpture By the Sea, Perth (2009) along with numerous group and solo exhibitions throughout

New Zealand. Hannah Kidd graduated in 2001 from the Otago Polytechnic School of Art with a

Bachelor of Fine Arts majoring in sculpture. In 2010 she was the Winner of the Montalto Sculpture

Award, Australia and the People’s Choice Award at NZ Sculpture On Shore.
