Pakistan is facing numerous challenges in shape of droughts, earthquakesand other natural calamities on frequent basis which has resulted in the formof health hazards, migration and joblessness. With children and womenbeing more vulnerable, health issues of children and empowerment ofwomen are the key challenges.
HANDS, keeping the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) target inmind, projects are being focused to achieve all indicators and to improvethe livelihood conditions of people with emphasis of women empowerment,livelihood, shelter, resilient and preparedness to face disasters, child educationand health related issues.
HANDS believe in equitable quality education with specific focus on girls'enrollment could improve education sector. Ensuring gender equity andequality at all levels to eliminate gender discrimination promoting healthylives and well beings of marginalized communities at all ages and levelsthrough improving access to health services and primary health care.
Since Pakistan is vulnerable to climate change and its consequences, acomprehensive approach by government could reduce the problems of peoplein case o disasters happen. In this connection, a pro-active approach regardingthe provision of improved, resilient living structure, provision of facilitiesrelated to water, sanitation, housing infrastructure is the need of hour.
HANDS was founded by Prof. A. G. Billoo (Sitara-e-Imtiaz) in 1979.HANDS has evolved in 35 years as one of the largest Non-Profit Organizationsof the country with an integrated development model and disaster managementexpertise. HANDS has a network of 31 offices across the country and hasaccess to more than 22 million population nearly 22,000 villages/ settlementin 47 districts of Pakistan. HANDS strength is 12 volunteers Board Members,more than 1900 full time staff and thousands of community based volunteersof >5600 partner organizations.
HANDS Pakistan is registered under Societies Act, is certified by PakistanCenter of Philanthropy (PCP) and Tax exempted by the Income TaxDepartment Government of Pakistan. HANDS has qualified the InstitutionalManagement Certification Program (IMCP) of USAID of managementstandards. HANDS is accredited with European Union. HANDS also possessmembership with Humanitarian Accountability Partnership (HAP) and themember of IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature).
HANDS International recently established its offices in London, UnitedKingdom and Kathmandu, Nepal. HANDS international -UK is registeredas Non-Profit Organization in Companies Act 2006 of England and Wales.

Rapid Assessment by HANDS to determineShangla, KPK earthquake losses
HANDS conducted rapid assessment in response to devastatingearthquake that hit many parts of Pakistan, including KhyberPakhtunkhwa. Shangla was among most affected.
According to Pakistan Metrological Department, the magnitudeof the earthquake was 8.1. Due to earthquake around 49people were killed and 184 people injured. 12775 houseswere also damaged.
Assessment was carried out in five most affected UnionCouncils including Alpurai, Lilowni, Peerabad, Dehrai andMalik Khail of Tehsil Alpurai. These Union Councils weredeclared as affected by Provincial Disaster ManagementAuthority (PDMA).
During the assessment, tool was used to collect the information.As many as 129 respondents were interviewed to get in-handinformation.
According to key findings of the assessment, more than halfof the households in five UCs, were fully damaged whereas29 per cent of households were partially damaged. It was alsoreveiled that 16% families had no shelter, 6.3% families wereliving in tents, 20% families were living in their partiallydamaged households while 44% families were living with hostfamilies. Only 10% received tents and blankets during relief.
Only 15% population had access to protected source of water.Diarrhea and seasonal cold, cough and fever were main healthproblems in communities. However to tackle patients, therewere one district headquarters hospital, one dispensary andone private clinic in earthquake affected areas.It was known that 16.1 families lost their livestock.
Capacity building ofCommunity Based Organizations
HANDS Social Mobilisation Programmme organised trainingfor Community Based Organisations (CBOs) to build theircapacities at different districts under HANDS-MISALI Project.The main objective of this training was to enhance the capacityof members/office bearers of CBOs as they could play their rolefor the development of their village/area according to the villagedevelopment plan prepared by the local community after attendingtraining in 11 districts of Sindh, Punjab and Balochistan provinces.Total 148 participants were trained through capacity buildingpackage under HANDS-MISALI Project.
Housing for poors with BHC inMirpurkhas, Umerkot
HANDS, in collaboration with Benazir Housing Cell (BHC)Government of Sindh, is providing 'housing for the poors'.The project aims to benefit 505 families at two districts, 300at Mirpurkhas and 105 at Umerkot. The selection ofbeneficiaries by the BHC is undertaken through members ofNational and Sindh assemblies and party office bearers ofthe district. Around 405 shelters were completed and handedover to the beneficiaries during the reporting period in boththe districts. About 300 houses were completed in Mirpurkhasand the target of 105 houses achieved in Umerkot, whereas53 houses are in progress at Umerkot. Each unit comprisesof two rooms, veranda and a toilet.

All selected families received 30 days food package andblankets with dignity according to the distribution protocolsof HANDS. The families were selected through HANDSBeneficiary Management Information System. The foodpackage comprised of wheat flour, rice, sugar, salt, cookingoil, pulses, chilies and spices. However due to cold Weatherblankets were also provided to the affected families.

Dignitaries visit different
educational interventions at Sukkur
Construction of Arain School Sukkur is in full swing with
HANDS being implementing partner. Arain School, a Sindh
Community Mobilization Project (SCMP) and component of
Sindh Basic Education Program, is being constructed with
funding support of USAID under umbrella of International
Relief and Development (IRD).
The project is aimed to serve catchment population,
strengthening the capacity of School Management Community
(SMC), enhance the enrolment of girls' students and decreasing
dropouts. 13-room school building would be well equipped
with science laboratory, Information Library and Health Room.
The construction work started in year 2014 whereas its
completion date is in year 2018.

of school. They also conducted meeting with community
regarding impacts of school construction for village students,
parents and vicinity villages. They also focused on developing
sub-committees of School Management Committee and
stressed on playing their effective role in succeeding such
model which would benefit the area.
Community mobilisation for
improved WASH, hygiene at Jacobabad
HANDS in collaboration with USAID, WaterAid and
UNICEF is running community mobilisation for improved
hand wash in Jacobabad, Sindh.
HANDS WASH team Jacobabad has proved through their
endless efforts ensuring the behavior change of the target
communities. The project includes the awareness regarding
the WASH issues and easy possible solution to them. The
behavior change has been a challenge in the urban areas of
Jacobabad.
The mega event of policy and advocacy seminar was arranged
in city, where well reputed personalities from different walk
of life participated. WASH Global Hand Washing Day and
World Toilet Day were celebrated in 26 targeted schools of
Jacobabad. Capacity building trainings of ward committees
is also in progress. WASH committees are also running
muhallah to muhallah programmes. The project also includes
multiple ways to spread awareness such as FM messages,
cable messages, mass massaging and different IEC materials
to cater different age groups.
Training of community organization on Disaster prevention and Disaster Resilient
Bags and water flasks
distribution in Kashmore and Larkana
Community Mobilization Plan (CMP) teams distributed bags
and water flasks among new enrolled students in Kashmore
and Larkana districts. This on-going activity is being carried-
out in CMP targeted schools.
In continuation to the activity, bags and water flasks were
distributed among newly enrolled students in Kashmore in
twenty schools. Similarly, CMP team distributed around 500
water flasks and bags among children in Larkana.

International visited districts Shikarpur, Kashmore, Jacobabad
and Ghotki to monitor and supervise the DPDRR project
activities. He also conducted the meeting with District Disaster
Management Authorities (DDMAs) at district Shikarpur.
DPDRR project serving 414
villages of 4 districts in Sindh
HANDS Pakistan under Medico International and BMZ
Funding Project 'Disaster Prevention and Disaster Resilient
Rehabilitation (DPDRR) is implementing this project in four
districts of northern Sindh.
Main objective of the project is to increase ability of
government institutions, civil society organisations and the
population of 414 villages of the district Ghotki, Jacobabad,
Kashmore at Kandhkot and Shikarpur to withstand natural
disasters and 300 households of six villages in district
Jacobabad have access to basic social and productive
infrastructure and stabilised livelihood.
In this quarter, HANDS completed various activities related

collection in various districts
Community Mobilization Plan (CMP) District Kashmore
team carried out the activity of collecting new admission
record and registration of fresh and new enrolled students in
(CMP) focused schools with filling of enrollment cards.
In reported period, CMP team collected record of new admitted
students from 34 schools out of 56 schools. During ongoing
activity, total 1155 students were enrolled in 34 schools so
far with data entry of 944 students on soft database.
District Jacobabad team also processed of filling of enrollment
cards of the newly enrolled students. The teams, while
explaining the importance of this activity, informed the school
management that these cards would be sent to Secretary
Education Office for record and reference.
District Karachi team finished the activity of collecting New
Admission record of 1393 fresh and new enrolled students
in CMP focused schools. During the activity 444 enrollment
cards were filled. In reported period, CMP team collected
new admission record from 23 schools.
CMP district Sukkur team carried out the activity of collecting
new admission record and registration of fresh and new
enrolled students with filling of enrollment cards. In reported
period, CMP team collected record of new admitted students
from 26 schools out of 50 schools. Total 1458 students were
enrolled in 26 schools with data entry of 1458 students on
soft database.

Improvement Plans endorsed by officials
Social Mobilization Committees (SMC) developed a list of
schools identifying different needs. According to School
Improvement Plans, these necessities required minor repair
and provision of clean drinking water.
For this purpose, various meetings were arranged by
Community Mobilization Plan (CMP) teams and attended by
community members, education officials and school staffs.
The purpose of the activity was to involve communities and
education officials to increase their coordination for
highlighting the needs and its resolutions.
In district Kashmore, 19 school improvement plans were
developed and endorsed by concerned officials. The plans
developed by SMCs along with school staffs and community
members, were endorsed by head teachers and authorized by
concerned Taluka Education Officials (TEOs).
In Jacobabad, CMP continued facilitating efforts regarding
development of 13 School Improvement Plans (SIPs).
The Karachi district CMP team organized SIP activities,

This is the integrated project including Social Mobilization,Disaster, Livelihood, CPI, WASH, Health, Nutrition,Education, Gender and Environment.
The target areas of this projects are 78 villages of variousdistricts including Matiari, Saheed Banizeerabad, KarachiRural, Karachi Urban, Tando Muhammad Khan, Tando AllahYar, Sanghar, Thatta ,Jacobabad, Jamshoro, Umerkot,Muzaffargarh and Jaffarabad.
During the period, project teams conducted 2550 meetingswith CBOs, community members, stakeholders, teachers,MARVI workers, religious leaders and LHWs regardingproject briefing and objectives. Project teams distributededucational materials, adult literacy materials and MARVIkits in 78 villages.
Project team briefed community members through awarenesssession on different social issues and topics such as drugs,FP, importance of girl's education, HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis B,gender based violence (GBVs) importance of vaccination,human rights and etc.
HANDS MISALI project will be focused on SDGs and willachieve all indicators for the sustainable development goalsand improve the livelihood conditions of people.
The project supports beneficiaries in form of poultry package,livestock goats, kitchen gardening and loan ranging from Rs.10,000 to Rs. 15,000. However 50 per cent of the loansdisbursement is mandatory for women.

views about how to improve the status of identified schools.

Promoting Improved Livelihoods
for Informal Sector Workers
HANDS implemented a project "Promoting Improved
Livelihoods for Informal Sector Workers" under Gender
Equity Program (GEP) of Aurat Foundation (AF) in Korangi
Crossing and Ibrahim Hyderi areas of Karachi.
In this regard, HANDS and WDF organized two-day exhibition
and seminar titled "Empowered Women - Empowered Society"
in October. The aim of the activity was to advocate favorable
policies for WHBWs and to strengthen market for their newly
developed products.

develop Social Mobilization Plans
In order to develop Social Mobilization Plans, Community
Mobilization Program (CMP) teams engaged in various
community meetings during this reported period.
The purpose of the development of Social Mobilization Plan
was to boost up and accelerate the extra curriculum activities to
increase the interest level of parents and students. In addition to
this, to encourage and raise mental and physical growth of
students through these activities was also the objective of SMPs.
The community members along with school staffs participated
in the activities and passed on various suggestions to develop
SMPs.
In District Kashmore, 22 Social Mobilization Plans (SMP)
were developed through village based community meetings.
In Karachi, CMP team conducted various community meetings
to develop Social Mobilization Plans. 23 SMPs were developed
through village based community meetings.
In District Larkana, 11 SMPs were developed by community
members, SMC members and school staff. Whereas in District
Sukkur, CMP team developed 7 Social Mobilization Plans
through community participation community members, SMC
members and school staff.
Swat hosts workshop on dual topics
10-day workshop on 'Training on Health & Hygiene Seeking
Behavior' and 'Training on MNCH, Nutrition and Wash' was
held in December at Swat.
Training workshop was facilitated by Dr. Anjum Fatma (SGM
Health) and Ms. Musarat Rani (Manager-Health).
Trainers conducted different training sessions on different
topics. Main focus of training workshop was to impart
maximum knowledge regarding the topic to the participants.
During the workshop, two external organizations trained their
trainees, offering training opportunities to local partner
organization.
Training on MNCH, Nutrition and
WASH held in Quetta
10-day training workshop on Maternal, Newborn and Child
Health (MNCH), Nutrition and WASH was held in December
at Quetta.
The workshop was facilitated by Mr. Dawood (DEM-Quetta)
and local HANDS trainer.
During the workshop, main focus of trainers was to give in-
depth knowledge regarding mother and child health. They
also discussed various aspects of nutrition, WASH and
children-related diseases.
During the training, five external organizations trained their
47 participants. Through this activity, HANDS offered training
opportunities to local partner organizations.
Virtual tutoring program demo classes
held in Sindh
Paying more focus on science subjects, HANDS has launched
its virtual tutoring program in eight districts of Sindh.
During the program, HANDS is providing the tutoring services
for class Nine, Matric and college students. In first phase,
HANDS provided demo classes in all districts for more than
300 students.
HANDS is also planning to launch its virtual education
program all over Pakistan in future.
Orientation workshop for
MYHP project staff held at Mansehra
Three-day orientation workshop under Multi Years
Humanitarian Program (MYHP) project for project staff was
held in December at Mansehra.
The workshop was facilitated by Mr. Ghulam Mustafa SGM-
IDEAS including other trainers.
The object of the training was to provide the basic idea and
concept about the project and to create better understanding
about the scope of work. Apart from these activities functioning
of project was also discussed at length.

Training workshop on Stress Management
and Positive Thinking held in Thatta
One-day training workshop on Stress Management and Positive
Thinking for district Thatta staff was conducted on November
07, 2015.
The workshop was facilitated by renowned professional
trainer Dr. Sarosh Hamid.
The main focus of the training was to minimize the impact
of stress on individuals and how to manage it. The second
phase of training was to enhance their skills related to positive
thinking.
During the training, Dr. Sarosh supervised different exercises
which helped the trainees to improve their personal and
professional lives.
Virtual English Language Program for
HANDS employees
HANDS launched Virtual English Language Program for its
employees to improve their skills regarding English language.
The program was launched with the collaboration of
EDUCAST, starting from September 01, 2015 and continued
till November 21, 2015.
The program was conducted for thirteen districts out of which
11 districts were from Sindh, whereas one each district from
Punjab and Balochistan were also selected.
During the training, classes were conducted in order to solve
their issues which they face in their reading, writing and
speaking the English language.
Since HANDS has always focused on the development of its
HR, the course was offered for free, allowing its employees
to do the language course online during office hours.
There were two modules Basic Language Program and
Advance Language Program offered in the program which
comprised of 12 classes for every program.
Webinar on �Role Of Ethics In Public
Health Research�
On October 10, 2015, Dr. Suleman Otho Consultant at HANDS
conducted a webinar on "Role of Ethics in Public Research".
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Otho explained about qualitative
research scientific research and its systemic ways of gathering
data and harnessing curiosity. Participants were told that
qualitative is a method of inquiry employed in many different
academic disciplines.
Proposal Writing and Budgeting Training
held in Lahore
In December HANDS conducted 'Project Proposal Writing
and Budgeting Training' in Lahore. The event was organized
with the collaboration of Punjab Welfare Trust for Disabled
(PWTD) and Milestone.
Around 30 persons from five districts of Punjab participated
during the training. The participants were engaged in discussion
to understand the subject and ensure the clarity of the topic.
They were also trained regarding the process of proposal
writing, fund-raising versus friend-raising, communication
with donor, work plan and budget.
In concluding session, Director Programs PWTD Dr Izharul
Haq Hashmi and President Milestone Mr. Shafiqur Rehman
while praising the efforts of participants, presented vote of
thanks.

World Teachers' Day marked
On October 05, World Teachers' Day was celebrated in
Kashmore. Various programs were conducted on this day to
acknowledge the services of teachers.
To mark the day, Government Boys High School Sardaroo
Khoso Union Council Gulanpur Taluka Kashmore also
arranged the program. Assistant Commissioner (TEO Taluka
Kashmore) Mr. Imtiaz Ahmed Mangi attended the event.
On the other hand, Government Girls' Primary School Wahid
Bux Bhayo Union Council Ghouspur Taluka Kandhkot also
arranged a colorful event facilitated by CMP District
Kashmore. Assistant Commissioner (TEO Taluka Kandhkot)
Mr. Zulfiqar Daudpoto graced the event.
The objective of the celebrations was to applaud the efforts
of teachers. Speakers paid rich tribute to the efforts and
highlighted hardships being faced by the teachers.
HANDS launches Employee Handook
For better understanding of its standard operating procedures,
HANDS recently launched �HANDS Employee Hand book�.
This would help employees to better understand the working
of organization and improving their day-to-day working
affairs. In this book all department brief working has been
written.
Brief working of all HANDS departments is another important
feature of the handbook.
Training workshop on Project
Management held for HANDS staff
In order to enhance the professional capabilities on
management side, one-day training workshop on Project
Management was held for HANDS Head Office Based Staff
at Karachi.
The training was the part of series of trainings which was
started for the development of HANDS Human Resource
skills. The main focus of the training was to have a brain
storming session on various different topics which increase
the proficiency in working at different level with in
organization.
The workshop was facilitated by CE HANDS Dr. Shaikh
Tanveer Ahmed who is professional trainer.
During the training, Dr Tanveer conducted many training
sessions on different topics related to leadership and NGO
management, which helped the staff to enhance and polish
their professional capabilities.
Webinar on �Spirituality & Leadership�
A webinar on "Spirituality & Leadership" was conducted by
Dr. Shaikh Tanveer Ahmed Chief Executive HANDS on
October 03, 2015.
The participants were delivered in-depth knowledge on
spiritual qualities through various presentations. Speaking on
the occasion, Dr. Tanveer explained the webinar participants
about what spirituality meant and the ways to get spiritual
satisfaction. He explained about spiritual travelogue through
a thoroughly prepared presentation. Participants were explained
abut different mindsets of leadership through a tree model.

HANDS Olympicsfor girls under 19
One of the reasons of Pakistan's poor Education and Healthindicators is the poor health conditions and lack of motivationfor children to go to school. Many researches across the worldhave proved that sports and other extracurricular activitiesincrease school enrollment and retention in schools. HANDSin collaboration with �Education and Literacy DepartmentGovernment of Sindh� successfully organized a three daysmega event of olympics games on 24-26 November, 2015 inKarachi where student of 48 schools of Karachi participated.In this olympics different games were organized like Volleyball, Basket ball, Throw ball, Tug of war and Athletics.Fazlullah Pechuho Secretary Education and LiteracyDepartment, Government of Sindh, Pakistan was the chiefguest. Renowned national players, politicians, HANDS staffand large number of people also participated in this event.
Seminar on World Mental Health DayHANDS conducted a seminar on World Mental HealthDay on 29th October 2015 at Reagent Plaza Hotel.Senator Taj Hyder chaired the seminar. This activity was partof Mental Health Development project funded by BasicNeedsorganization and it was implemented by HANDS KarachiRural office in Bin Qasim town and Gadap town. Theproceedings of the event included sharing of project progressby District Project Manager Mr. Ali Bux and differentstakeholders. Dr. Sarwat Mirza shared the way forward forthe pursuing activities for mental health development.
HANDS Nutrition Interventionsin District- Tharparkar
HANDS in partnership with UNICEF and WFP hassuccessfully implanted Nutrition project in 20 UCs of TalukaMitthi and Diplo in District Tharparkar. Since April 2014HANDS is working on nutrition specific intervention in theseUnion Councils. HANDS intervention will significantlycontribute to reduction of morbidity and mortality in childrenless than five years of age and Pregnant & lactating womendue to malnutrition and infectious diseases.
Total 215,377 women and children have been screened. Outof those 37,374 Children and 22,139 (31%) have beenidentified as malnourished (26%). Under CMAM Program,they have been provided high energy food and micro nutrients. So far through these interventions 58% of women and childrencured and rest are under followup. In addition, for communityawareness sessions were conducted for the mothers onbreastfeeding and on correct practices for Infant and YoungChildren. HANDS also supported and facilitated the districthealth department in establishing stabilization center. Fromthis center so far 67 severely malnourished children havebeen treated and cured.
CMW School Achievements
HANDS CMW School established in Jamkanda hospital has
been regularly conducting Community Midwifery Training.
The trainee batch for session of 2015 appeared in their final
exams and achieved excellent results. The overall result was
96% as there was only candidate who did not succeed. The
average percentage of marks achieved by CMWs was more
than 75% and this reflects the quality of training and
commitment of trainee students. It is expected that the
successful candidates will provide reproductive health services
in their respective far flung rural areas.
