Dual Credit

Handbook

2018-2019

Frequently Asked Questions 1. What is Dual Credit?

The Dual Credit Program is a coordinated program between Boerne ISD and Northwest Vista College (NVC) that allows students to earn college and high school

credit for courses successfully completed at the high school campus. Teachers are required to have a Master’s degree and have at least 18 graduate-level credit hours

in the discipline they teach or a history of industry experience in a Dual Credit Career and Technology Education course.

2. How is Dual Credit different from the Advanced Placement

Program? Advanced Placement courses, like dual credit, are rigorous college level courses that follow a college curriculum approved by College Board. Students taking these

courses are expected to take the AP tests offered in the spring that have additional fees paid by the students. Students scoring a 3, 4, or a 5 on one or more of these

tests may gain college credit. Students should consult specific colleges/university websites to verify accepted AP tests and scores and how they will fit into a potential degree plan. Dual Credit is also rigorous; however, dual credit is college credit upon

successful completion of the course(s).

3. How many Dual Credit courses can a student take? High school students are allowed to take up to 14 dual credit courses while in high school.

4. How do these courses impact GPA? Advanced Placement and Dual Credit courses are increased by eighteen (18) points

per full semester completed.

5. How does a student know that a grade from Boerne ISD matches the grade recorded at NVC?

Students can log in to ACES to check their college email to see grades that have

been posted for dual credit courses. Grading for dual credit courses is: A-90-100, B-80-89, C-70-79, D-60-69, F-below a 60.

6. How do students earn credit? In order to earn both high school and college credit, students must make a 70 or higher for each semester of the course(s).

7. How do I know what credit I will receive at my university?

Please refer to the Texas Common Course Numbering System at www.tccns.org to

determine what credit the two- or four-year institution will award you once you transfer your credits.

8. What happens if a student fails or drops a course?

If a student makes below passing for the semester, the grade is recorded on the NVC college transcript. The student is then ineligible to earn dual credit for any course in

the future and is dropped from the program. A student may withdraw from a dual credit course to avoid a failing grade. If a student

withdraws before Census Date (first two weeks of the semester), then there is no penalty on the college transcript. This date is published by Alamo Colleges and will be

made available at the high school, but it is the responsibility of the student to know dates and deadlines. If a student withdraws after Census Date but before the official final day to withdraw,

then a W is recorded on the NVC transcript. A W has no bearing on the student’s GPA, but more than 6 Ws in the college career can affect financial aid.

If a student attempts a course for a third time in college, including dual credit, the student will be charged out-of-state tuition for that course. A student cannot withdraw from a course after the final withdrawal date has passed.

The student must stay in the course and the grade earned will go on the NVC transcript. A student must to show Satisfactory Academic Progress in all attempted college level courses to be eligible for financial aid. Failing grades or withdrawals from dual credit count against SAP.

9. How do grades transfer from NVC to another institution?

After graduation, students must request an official transcript be sent from NVC to the college/university the student will be attending. The official transcript request

can be made in person at NVC at the Welcome Center or on the student ACES account. Official transcripts are sent directly to the receiving institution and not released to the student. Unofficial transcripts will be available to seniors in the

counseling office in the spring semester for the purposes of taking it to the college new student orientation. Students may also request an unofficial transcript in person

at Northwest Vista College. Alamo.edu/nvc/dual-credit/graduates.htm

10. Will dual credit affect status at a college or university?

The dual credit transcript must be sent to the college or university the student attends after high school graduation. If a student earns 30 or more hours, the student may

be classified as a sophomore or higher. This could affect financial aid and scholarships, but many schools will consider the student as a “first-time student” for freshman scholarships. Please contact the admissions and financial aid offices of individual

colleges and universities for the policy.

11. How much does it cost to take AP or Dual Credit courses?

Dual Credit Courses are free to BISD students; however, the cost of the TSI

Assessment is $15 per test and $5 for each retested section. The cost of AP exams is regulated through College Board and there is a fee.

12. If a student does not qualify for dual credit will the student

need to reapply next year? A student will need to reapply the following year if he or she does not qualify for dual credit. In addition, if a student qualifies for dual credit but does not enroll in

any dual credit courses, the student will need to reapply the following year.
