Managing Hand Safety Hazards

“A heart to resolve, a head to contrive, and a hand to execute.” (Edward Gibbon 1737-1794)

Group Discussion

- what are some of the hand hazards that you see everyday in your workplace?

- what are some of the things you think about during Stepback & JHAs to prevent / control hand injuries?

Hierarchy of Controls

Page 9: Hand hazard controls

Elimination Controls

Inspect objects for sharp edges, grease, fluids or dirt that could damage your hands

Avoid exposure to hazardous chemicals

Where possible, use tools to automate tasks

Page 10: Hand hazard controls

Substitution Controls

Minimise exposure to hand hazards by substituting your hands for other tools

Clamps, vice grips, ropes instead of holding objects with hands

Use a lever instead of your hands

Power tools, not hand tools

Engineering Controls

Many engineering controls are already in place - make sure they’re used.

- Toolbox lid braces

- Air, hydraulic wrenches

- Design safer spaces, tools

Make suggestions for better engineering controls

Page 12: Hand hazard controls

Isolation Controls

Most moving machinery in the workplace has isolation controls against hand hazards

- Barriers

- Guards

- shrouds

Isolation controls make the hazard less accessible

Make sure they’re in place, and report instances if you see them not being used

Administrative Controls

Administrative Controls promote awareness through:

- Standard Operating Procedures

- Toolbox meetings

- JHA/Stepback

- Permits, lock out and tag out procedures

- Training & hand safety awareness materials

- Don’t wear jewelry to work

Personal Protective Equipment

Gloves & Barrier Creams

Make sure you’ve selected the right one

Ensure your gloves are well maintained

PPE – the final layer of control…

Page 15: Hand hazard controls

Glove Types

Cloth/canvas - dirt, wood slivers & mild temp.

Leather - moderate heat, sparks or chips, handling rough/sharp objects

Cut resistant (Kevlar) - sharp objects/surfaces

Electrician’s rubber - electrical equipment

Impervious gloves - harmful substances

Lead lined - radiation hazards

Aluminised - flame & extreme temperature

A Final Word on the Controls…

Use the hierarchy of controls to eliminate and control hand hazards

Always use stepback to continually monitor and reassess the hazards and controls put in place

Use the correct type of glove

Ensure your personnel have a pair of gloves to take to the field. Make gloves part of your mandatory PPE
