Welcome This year Hampshire Fare’s Local Produce guide is bigger and better than ever, yet this essential annual directory is still free.

Keep your copy to hand to help you find out where to buy your favourite local award-winning food and drink. Or perhaps you want to know which pubs and restaurants feature local produce on their menu - almost invariably a guarantee of a very good meal and a decent pint?

When Hampshire Fare was established, over 20 years ago, the concept of eating seasonally, the artisan producer and knowing the provenance of produce was considered radical. But for many these are now accepted expectations as we have become more aware about what our families eat, and more concerned about supporting our local economy.

How we shop has changed, too. There has been a resurgence of interest in markets and local independents and a reduction in bulk buying at supermarkets as we move towards buying fresh produce in smaller quantities as and when needed.

At Hampshire Fare we support and nurture this movement by helping to make the connection between the growers and producers and their markets... whether that’s a restaurant or pub, a retailer or you.

We celebrate and showcase Hampshire produce which is as varied as our county’s beautiful landscape, which encompasses chalk streams and coastline, heathland and forest, farmland, orchards and vineyards.

So whether you’re a fully-fledged foodie, a parent keen to know where your children’s food comes from, or someone keen to discover more about the character of the local area, this Guide is for you.

ButchersHampshire Fare organises the prestigious annual Great Hampshire Sausage & Pie Competition with a panel of expert judges and some really tasty Hampshire bangers. Previous winners have enjoyed an increase in business.

EventsWe showcase the abundance of local produce through a number of events including the Hampshire Food Festival. Hampshire Fare coordinates this month-long Festival, presenting the series of varied events, from tours to tastings, into a comprehensive free guide. This year’s Festival is extra special as Hampshire Food Festival celebrates its 15th anniversary. No one across the country does a Festival of this size, scale and ambition.

FarmersWe have supported farmers - for example, with funding from The Prince’s Countryside Fund we helped pig farmers diversify into charcuterie, supported by training and the founding of Hampshire Charcuterie.

Landscape & HeritageHampshire Fare promotes the county locally and nationally as a tourism destination as the local food industry is a key component of the county’s culture and heritage. Local food is part of the landscape, including chalk streams with trout and watercress, the Forest with venison, and downlands planted with vineyards. And Hampshire’s cities, towns and villages offer some of the country’s top chefs, restaurants and pubs.

Media & MarketingWe engage with local and national media promoting our food and drink producers and our county. Follow us through our popular Twitter feed (@Hampshirefare), vibrant website and Facebook page, or subscribe to our newsletter with competitions, recipes, seasonal produce and more.

Shops & RestaurantsWe put people in contact with each other through monthly networking events enabling producers to meet buyers from the retailing and hospitality businesses, as well as ‘meet the buyer’ and trade show events. This creates opportunities to generate often mutually lucrative collaborations

YoungstersWe are keen to inspire an interest in food and cooking among youngsters. This entails, for example, ongoing involvement with HC3S (Hampshire County Council Catering Services) promoting the use of local produce in school meals, and partnering Create & Cook, a successful cookery competition for teenagers.

Look out for the Hampshire Fare ‘hog’ Hampshire is developing a nationally-recognised reputation for its award-winning produce and top quality restaurants, pubs and cafes.

Hampshire Fare is part of that success story. Look out for the Hampshire Fare logo – the sign of the ‘hog’ is recognised as a sign of local provenance and great quality.

Established over 20 years ago to promote local produce, Hampshire Fare is a not-for-profit Community Interest Company and one of the longest-established and most successful county food groups in the country, and a key component for local economic growth and Hampshire tourism.

Hampshire Fare’s strength lies in supporting producers, retailers, cafes, pubs and restaurants with business and marketing expertise and joins up all the different elements to help create a vibrant food culture countywide.

Where to buy

THERE’S A JOY TO BUYING LOCALFor a start there’s the feel good factor as you’re supporting local businesses by investing and contributing towards the local and rural economy. Then there’s a chance of being given advice from the experts: the producers manning the market stalls and the shop owners who are passionate about what they sell are pleased to tell you what is in season, how to store it, prepare it, and suggest cooking tips.

Then there’s the feeling of wellbeing. Shopping at markets, local independents and farm shops helps people to feel part of the local community, turning necessary routine into a sociable pleasure.

It’s so easy to shop local. There are farmers’ markets, food markets and pop-ups and food festivals held countywide where you will find our Hampshire Fare members and other local producers. For the latest markets, dates, times and locations, visit Hampshire Fare’s website, www.hampshirefare.co.uk.

Shopping locally can fit in around your lifestyle, too. If you’re short of time you can often ask to have veg boxes, meat boxes and even beer delivered to your door. Or you can shop online – many local producers can be contacted via websites, Facebook and twitter.

Finally, don’t forget the health benefits. Fresh, seasonal produce and locally-made artisan goods are often the healthiest as well as the tastiest choice.

Buy locally, buy wiselyHaving the opportunity for interaction with local producers or butchers means you can make more informed choices about what you are buying. Here are some tips for buying meat locally:• Buy according to your budget, explain what

you have to spend and ask for suggestions that fall within that limit.

• Ask for ideas and cooking tips.• Explain how many people you are feeding so

you buy the right amount.• Find out if any less popular cuts are available.

• Order ahead and save time.• Butchers are often happy to cut or bone meat

according to your needs.• Ask where the meat has come from if it is not

reared on site.• Get advice on what is in season and on offer.

PARISH chiefs at NorthBaddesley are angry thatmore than £200,000secured from developersis set to go towardsimproving a school out-side the village.Parish council chairman

David Knight said it is wrongthat the £215,858.00 obtainedthrough a 106 agreementbetween borough planners andthe developer building 37 newhomes at Baddesley Close isgoing to a Halterworth primarySchool in Romsey.Mr Knight: “We believe the

money should go to the two Bad-desley schools. More classroomsare needed. This money couldhave gone towards purpose-builtclassrooms because they are des-perately needed. It’s crazy thatall this money is going to thewrong place. It’s needed here.”Mr Knight’s wife, Irene, has

also demanded to know why Hal-terworth is getting the cash andwhy councillors were not con-sulted before a decision wasmade.“I think the local community

should have been involved in thedecision,” she said.“Neither the county councillor

or borough councillors or TestValley’s planning departmentwere informed that the moneywas destined to go to Halter-worth. If they had, they mayhave had an opportunity to chal-lenge the decision.”Mrs Knight who took the mat-

ter up with Hampshire’s school

organisation officer GlennParkinson.Hampshire’s Baddesley divi-

sion member Alan Dowden isalso unhappy that the moneyhas gone to Halterworth.“HCC say there is no a need for

places at schools in the villagebut they are full up and can’ttake any more children. Anyonemoving into the area hasn’t gotany hope of getting their child into schools in Baddesley,” said MrDowden, who said there was asimilar shortage of places at Val-ley Park and Chandler’s Ford.He added: “The whole issue of

school places needs to be lookedat again because there is clearlya shortage. HCC claim there areenough spaces at Baddesleyschools, so they are giving thismoney to Halterworth.”Mr Dowden said that with

more homes planned for NorthBaddesley the need for moreplaces will become even moreapparent.Officials at Hampshire’s educa-

tion department say that theproposed 300-home Hoe Lanedevelopment at North Baddesleyfalls within the HalterworthSchool catchment area, so peo-ple from the village will benefitfrom the money going to Halter-worth.However, Mr Dowden believes

sending children from NorthBaddesley to Halterworth willonly cause more congestionaround the Romsey school.“Rather than walk to school,

parents will drive their childrento school. People are alreadycomplaining about cars beingparked along Halterworth Laneand this will not help the situa-tion,” he concluded.Hampshire’s cabinet spokes-

person for education, PeterEdgar said that the authoritywill be reviewing needs for pri-mary school places in the area.He also said that discussions

had taken place between thecounty council and the NorthBaddesley schools before thedecision was made to allocatethe cash to Halterworth.“The development at Baddes-

ley Close is not large enough towarrant a school expansion inits own right so discussions tookplace with the North Baddesleyschools to explore how addition-al places could be provided tomeet long-term demand,” saidMr Edgar.“When we were asked by

TVBC to name a school thatmight require developer fund-ing for primary school infra-structure, it was logical at thattime to suggest Halterworth, asthe Hoe Lane development iswithin the school’s catchmentarea, and in order to consoli-date possible school expansionin one location.”

GIVE YOURSELF A FARE CHANCEAre you an artisan food, drink or craft producer? Do you run a deli or farm shop? Maybe you’re a chef, or own a café, pub or restaurant and you’re into using local ingredients and supporting the local economy?

If you grow, make, sell, serve or support local produce, then how about joining us at Hampshire Fare? We are one of the longest-established and most proactive food groups in the country, supporting more than 300 of Hampshire’s top quality producers, retailers and hospitality venues. Our members include individual artisan producers through to nationally and internationally-recognised businesses.

Joining Hampshire Fare is a chance to engage with the local food industry and to receive professional PR, marketing and business support. This includes regular networking events, promotion through our publications, website, e-newsletters and social media, and opportunities to participate in events such as the award-winning Hampshire Food Festival – a month-long countywide celebration of local food and drink and craft organised by Hampshire Fare.

If you are interested in finding out how Hampshire Fare can benefit your business, simply contact Tracy Nash, Commercial Manager, Hampshire Fare, 02380 733830 or email [email protected]. Alternatively you can register your interest in becoming a member at [email protected]
