Presenter biographies

Adam Broughton is an ensemble and percussion specialist with

Hampshire Music Service and he leads the percussion and world music teams. Adam is a multi-instrumentalist, playing trumpet, orchestral percussion and drum kit. Alongside these he has studied a wide range of world musics, including West and North African drumming, Samba, Gamelan, Latin percussion and North Indian classical music. He is teacher of orchestral percussion for the Specialist Music course at Peter Symonds. Adam directs the Hampshrie County Youth Wind Ensemble and the Romsey Youth Concert Band for Hampshire Music Service and also conducts the adult Linden Wind Orchestra in London.

FolkActive is now well established as one of the leading folk

development organisations in the south of England, as well as being a respected social enterprise commited to using music and dance to promote health and wellbeing, raise cultural awareness and build community. The FolkActive team has a secure educational base: Jo Harmer is an experienced music curriculum teacher with a national reputation as a folk

dance workshop leader, while Tom Gregory combines his skills as a world music workshop leader with years of involvement and performance in English folk music, song and dance traditions. Folk fiddler Cath Watkins brings experience as a community music leader while with her ceilidh band Jigfoot she is enjoying national recognition for promoting southern folk dance tunes based on research into local (often Hampshire) traditions. Together, they have already reached thousands of children through lively folk workshops and projects in schools, and as Hampshire Music Hub partners FolkActive look forward to supporting teachers wanting to connect and engage children with their traditional folk heritage in relevant, creative ways.

Rosaria Garcia has been dancing, teaching and choreographing static

and parade performances since 1999. She has performed extensively in the UK and internationally in Belgium, France, Germany, Spain, Brazil and Cuba. She has a broad experience as a teacher, performer and choreographer for groups of all ages, delivering over 300 practical and theoretical workshops per year. Rosaria encountered Bollywood while performing with Emergency Exit Arts in their show Runga Rung (2005 – 2007). She then undertook training with Himany Dixit in Udaipur (India) and continued her research and

practice. She has taught Bollywood and Bhangra as part of the Dance Course at City College (UAL Diploma 2010 - 2014), in schools, events and Indian weddings. She also choreographed a piece for the project Yamuna Yemanja performed at the famous Notting Hill Carnival (2014) fusing Indian and Brazilian dance traditions. Her international dance expertise incorporates Flamenco palos and Afro-Brazilian dance practices which she immersed in since the 1990s. She has a special interest in the representations of dance of the African Diaspora in Brazil and Cuba which is translated in her Indigenous Indian choreographies and Bahiana in Samba, Maracatu and Afoxe.

Phil Heeley has over thirty years’ teaching and training experience. Phil

Heeley is renowned globally for his expertise in Music Education and Technology. His company “Inclusive Music” encapsulates his passion for enabling Access For All through the power and possibilities of technology. Creator of the Best Sellers “Dance eJay for Schools” and co-author of “GarageBand for Schools”, he supports teachers to tackle and tame technology, giving them the confidence to successfully deliver high quality, motivating lessons and facilitate children’s creativity and learning. Ofsted has

repeatedly recognised him as an “outstanding” teacher.

Matthew Hemson is a consultant within the education and mental health

sectors. He has extensive experience working with schools and organisations to create enabling environments that foster improved mental health and academic progress.

Matthew is a therapist specialising in Music and Jungian Sandtray and delivers training in Therapeutic Intervention Skills and the importance of Staff Wellbeing. He is an associate lecturer at UWE on the Mental Health Nursing degree.

Charles MacDougall is an award-winning tenor, choral animateur and

vocal coach, known equally for his voice and his transformative work with choirs and singers. In 2018 he made his London Handel Festival debut with London Early Opera at St. George’s, Hanover Square. Prior to that, from 2005-2012, he was a member of VOCES8, performing over 100 concerts internationally each year. With the group he released several successful commercial albums and made regular television and radio appearances, giving his final performance with them on Christmas Day 2012 in Shanghai. He has also sung for London Early Opera (and appears on their recent releases Handel at Vauxhall, Vol.1 & 2, Signum Classics), the Gabrieli Consort, Seraphim, Cappella Nova, Schola Cantorum of

Oxford and been involved in innovative collaborations with the James Taylor Quartet (Queen Elizabeth Hall). Charles is also a highly experienced vocal coach and choral animateur, working for the LSO Discovery, London Youth Choir, as well as being Chorus Director for Gabrieli Roar and directing two choirs in London. Highlights in 2018 included conducting the world premiere of Errolyn Wallen’s MAP: Songs for children everywhere for Snape Maltings in Hull, as well as receiving the Music Teacher Award for Excellence in Primary/Early Years 2018 for his work as choral director in The Voices Foundation/DRET Singing Schools pilot programme. Formerly the Senior Vocal Coach at Portsmouth Cathedral, Whitgift School and Croydon Minster, he is now Choral Director for The Voices Foundation, coaches for the Royal School of Church Music, and is Consultant Vocal Coach at Derby Cathedral and Radley College.

Shaun Riches

After starting a traditional classical education in music, studying both piano and flute, Shaun moved on to learn electric bass in his early teenage years. This led to a deep love of jazz music and after completing his ‘A’ Levels Shaun went on to study Jazz and Contemporary Music at Leeds College of Music, gaining a First Class Honours Degree.

He worked as a professional musician for two years before moving into education: firstly as a Music Teacher at Bitterne Park School, then as Head of Music at Hamble School and on to Director of Music at Brookfield Community School. In recent years, Shaun has taken on a whole school role as Director of Learning and Assistant Headteacher at Brookfield.

Spud and Yam Kate Corkery is an award winning Irish storyteller with a background in language teaching, writing and drama.She is storyteller in residence at The Irish Cultural Centre in London and has recently launched a book on "Cork Folk Tales" published by the History Press. Her passion is storytelling in education, to help children develop self esteem and encourage them to find their voice.Kate has told stories in schools all over the world including China, Russia

and South America as well as Europe and the UK. Together with Winston Nzinga, Kate has developed and produced many educational projects that engage children in cross-curricular learning.

Winston Nzinga is a much travelled Jamaican storyteller/musician with vast experience in inspiring both children and adults with his rich singing voice and wonderful percussion workshops.Winston's background as a professional singer, dancer and drummer brings rhythm and movement into all his storytelling performances.

In sharing his love for music Winston makes it easy for all ages and abilities to enjoy joining in with singing and playing a variety of instruments. He and Kate as SPUD AND YAM have produced very popular CDs and resource packs for children.- 'Celtic and Caribbean Fun Songs' and 'On Our Way'

Ben Sellers

Ben is a Drake Music Associate Musician, and works with organisations around the UK to support SEND pupils to compose, improvise and perform. He sees the music classroom as a space for personal and social transformation. He is particularly interested in developing methods for non-specialist and technology-shy educators to use technology to teach music, and to that

end has written several resources, including a textbook, 'Teaching Music with Garageband for iPad', Charanga's new 'SEND Create' resource and articles for Music Teacher and SingUp! Magazines. In addition to his roles as Associate Musician at Drake Music and Lead Musician at Transformance Music, partners have included the BBC SO, LPO, The Museum of London, WOMAD Festival and several Music Education Hubs.

Em Whitfield Brooks is a choral leader, facilitator, voice coach and

songwriter. With a background in theatre, circus and singing, Em leads diverse choral and performance projects in community, corporate and education settings across the UK and internationally. She was advisor and national trainer for Sing Up, and has a particular interest in combining artforms to offer accessible approaches to non-specialists. Em founded and was director of Ryedale Festival Community Opera for 14 years, has conducted the 750-strong Hull Freedom

Chorus since 2011, including appearances at major events for Hull 2017 City of Culture, and was Artistic Director of Helmsley Arts Centre from 2011 – 2016. Em led the workshops, trained and conducted the 200-strong chorus for people’s opera Calderland at Halifax Piece Hall in 2017, which won the Royal Philharmonic Society Award for Learning and Participation. She is Associate Direc-tor of The Map Consortium and her songbook for community choirs, I Wanna Make You Sing! is published by Banks Music Publications.
