AIM TO ACHIEVE
Book Week / Education Week In week 6, Nowra PS will be holding a
combined Book Week and Education
Week. This will be a great week jam-
packed with exciting activities. We are
exploring the great books that excite
young readers through book week
activities, with our massive book
parade being a real highlight of our
calendar. We will also be celebrating
all things in Public Education as part
of Education Week. There will be an
‘Open Classrooms’ event during the
week. This is always a great
opportunity to gain insight into how
our classrooms work across the
school.
Staffing Update Aunty Ruth, our Aboriginal Education
Officer (AEO) is taking leave this term.
Melissa Nye will be the Relieving AEO
pending Aunty Ruth’s return to NPS in
Term 4. We welcome Ms Nye to the
role, and we wish Aunty Ruth a restful
and well-earned break from her role.
Learning Environments Our iPad initiative is having quite an
impact on classrooms across the
school. I have been impressed by how
quickly teachers are shifting their
classroom practices in finding new
ways in which the iPad can support or
extend student learning. Students
have been emailing me directly to let
me know how the iPads are changing
their classroom experiences. Some of
the key themes from these messages
has been the increase in speed in
which they can complete tasks that
teachers set, and increased access to
information. There is much less
waiting for a machine to access the
internet. Students are exploring their
creativity, creating their own music to
go with short films they make that
explains their learning. It’s all
pretty exciting stuff! We are
encouraged by what we are seeing
so far. We are certainly keen to

Complex Issues There are times at our school
where some students display some
anti-social behaviours. One of the
roles of the school in society is to
instill acceptable values and
attitudes. We are not always
successful, for any number of
complex reasons. At times,
students can be aggressive towards
others. At times, students are
unkind to others. These are never
great experiences for anyone
involved. Dealing with poor
behaviour is a time consuming
process at our school. How can
parents help? Increasingly we are
hearing from parents that they
approve of thei r ch i ldren
responding to violence with more
violence. Increasingly, we have
parents fronting to the school in an
agitated, aggressive state, upset
because of something that has
happened. I need to make this
clear. This school needs all of the
adults involved to remain calm. All
adults involved in this school need
to stop advocating for violence as a
solution to violence. Front office
staff at the school are there to help
you, they will direct you to who best
can speak with you to help resolve
issues. I would like to remind
parents that you are visiting a
workplace. If you are abusive or
aggressive or threatening towards
staff, you will be asked to leave the
school grounds. You may not be
allowed back onto the premises for
a period of time. Work with the
school, not against us. Violence is
not ok, we don’t condone it in
anyway. Help the school, change
the message at home. Violence and
aggression never has been, never
will be, the solution to a problem.

P & C News
On Wednesday August 8, the P and C held their Week 3
meeting, which was very well attended as always. I
know how hard it is for parents to make the meetings
in the evenings, but I certainly appreciate the effort
made by parents, carers and NPS staff to get there.
Some major achievements came from the meeting last
week.
Firstly, we were able to donate $520 to the cost of
costumes for Southern Stars performers, as this year
they are a bit more expensive than planned. We can't
wait to see how they turn out!
With the increase in parents volunteering at NPS
events, we have also purchased 12 blue safety vests
with 'NPS P and C Volunteer' printed on the back, so
that our volunteers are easily identifiable at school
events.
We have also purchased two bench top convection
ovens for the canteen, so that hot food in lunch orders
are going out nice and hot every day.
These are some of the things that our fundraising gets
directed towards, so I would like to thank our school
community for supporting us.
Our uniform shop is open every Friday from 830am to
330pm, and also now open on the first Tuesday of
every month, from 830am-1030am. Please make use
of the opening times if you can, but also remember you
can order via the P and C Facebook page and make a
direct deposit.
Flexischools is increasingly being utilised to order from
the canteen, so we thank you for supporting this
ordering process.
OBSTACOOL is coming to Nowra Public School on
October 6, in the middle weekend of the school
holidays. Order your tickets for the giant inflatable
course at www.eventbrite.com.au so you don't miss out
on this great school holiday activity.
As always, please respect that our school is a place for
learning, so if you have any questions or concerns
regarding your child's school experience, please make
sure you touch base with your Childs class teacher first.
It is also important that if you are entering school
grounds for any reason during school hours that you
sign in at the front office.
Thank you for your support,
Kate Daniel, P & C President
