On this past Saturday, the gym at St. Joseph Island Central School was filled with pumpkins of all shapes and sizes. 47 Children’s entries and 9 adult entries were entered into the Horticultural Society’s annual pumpkin decorating contest.

There was every kind of pumpkin imaginable, from tradi-tional Jack O’ Lanterns, to painted pumpkins, some super

cute, super scary and even silly. Some pumpkins were even home grown, and with members on hand hosting the event, they probably also gave out some pumpkin growing tips. Other categories included the tallest and smallest grown pumpkin.

While the traditional triangle eyes and square teeth may bring back memories of your childhood, many of today’s pumpkins have hours invested on getting them just right.

Etching patterns in, careful carvings and precise paintings. Some even used props to further detail their pumpkins.

While the pump-kins were dropped off in the morning and judged in the early afternoon, treats were given out ahead of Halloween and games were put on inside the gym to make it an afternoon of fun for the kids and adults alike.

Even if you’re not carving, it’s certainly worth checking these guys out. If you missed the event, many will probably be on porches tonight. More Pictures on Page 4

Creature FeatureNorthern Ring - Necked Snake

These tiny secretive snakes - not to be confused with with the more common and larger garter snakes, are nocturnal. While they can reach 70cm, 30-40cen-timterrs is their common full grown size. Their primary diet is salamanders, which are abundant around these parts.

We have only seen the one ring necked snake since moving here, and just one salamander. Like the secretive salamander that was fea-tured last week, this picture comes from a recent reader submission, this time from Dan McCarty.

Ring-necked snakes also eat other amphibians and small insects. While they are not clas-sified as venomous, their bite is apparently “mildly toxic”.

That should not be much of a concern, as they are quite skittish. Regardless, we don’t recom-mend picking them up if you see them, but if our recommendation isn’t enough, know that ringneck snakes do not bite when caught but will release a foul-smelling feces and musk from anal glands.

The last Friday of October is the day the Poppy Cam-paign starts. To recognize the event the R.C.L. Br. 374 hosted a Poppy Pinning Ceremony. Invited were area Veterans and local dignitaries. On be-half of the Branch, President Dave Pearse proudly pinned poppies and would like to thank all that attended.

Poppies are now available at local merchants and wreaths are available at the Branch Office (705-246-2494). Remembrance Day Church Service is Sunday November 3 at 11am at the Harmony St. Mark’s United Church in Richards Landing. On November 11th, Cenotaph wreath layings in Richards Landing, Hilton Beach, Echo Bay and Port Findlay are at 10am followed by Remem-brance Day Service at 10:45am. The Township of St. Joseph Council and Landfill Committee want you to know more about our Landfill. We’re calling it “Trash Talk”.

Why is The Township of St. Joseph no longer accepting glass recycling?

· The company that buys our recycling no longer accepts it since it is not profitable. This a na-tion-wide issue.

· Glass is heavy, sharp and often not washed out and can contaminate a whole batch of recyclables.

So, what do I do with my glass now?

· Reuse glass containers as much as possible for storage around the house.

· Buy food in bulk and, where possible, in your own containers.

· Buy less glass. Instead purchase #1 and #2 plastics and tin cans.

If you can’t do the above, dispose of glass in your regular household waste, not in the recycling. It presents a hazard, contaminates the batch and adds weight (expense) for the Township.

SIDEWALK PLOW OPERATOR

The Township of St. Joseph is accepting applications for the part time seasonal position of sidewalk plow operator in Richards Landing.

Applicants must have a valid Ontario driver’s license, be self directed and be available on short notice. Hours are dependent on weather conditions. In addition to clearing sidewalks, the Operator is also responsible for sanding, salting and shoveling snow.

The quilters meet on Tuesdays from 1-3pm at the Waterfront Centre in Hilton Beach except the third Tuesday when they meet at the Dr. Trefry Centre in Rich-ards Landing. Over the next few months there will be minor ren-ovations underway at the Library to upgrade the heating and lighting systems. The work planned will change our overhead fluorescent lights to LED lights. Halloween If you’re reading this Thursday and it’s getting dark outside, it’s time to take your kids out for Trick or Treating! With Halloween on our delivery date we are unable to include current photos of this year’s Hallow-een activities, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot going on. Lilian Rhodes at Whipawheel Home Farm store has done a great job decorating for incoming Trick or Treaters and sent us these great pics.

Also, The Fairy Godmother is back at Moose Sweats captivating children and giving them small toys and the streets of Richards Landing will be full children. You can also check out the Hilton Township building which is always nicely decorated with tons of treats. This is without mentioning all the nicely decorated homes we’ve seen all over the island.
