From the Editor: Ahoy mates: The Halifax Boat Show (in my opinion) was one of the best we have had in a longtime. The displays were very well done, the staff at eachlocation were professional, well turned out and offeredboaters an opportunity to escape the daily routine for a fewdays. I was one of the first to get in the door on Thursday andI was not disappointed. I tried to visit all the booths, but Imust confess I leaned to the sailing side a little more than thepower side. The power side that I did visit was mostimpressive and even I picked up a few brochures detailingsome of the most beautiful boats that I have seen in a longtime. Boating is one of, if not the best family sport around. Itpromotes responsibility, good will and a sincere interest inkeeping our coastlines and inland waterway clean for years tocome. Once again, I bumped into several AYC Members andthey all agreed that the toys that were at the show were very very nice. I had my eyes on a beauty. I quickly went and bought a lottery ticket as soon as I got to the local mall. See you at the club.

AYC RENOVATION CREWHi folks!

We started the New Year with a flurry of activity. Asyou know, this year we only had a one week shut downso with a team of dedicated volunteers we set to work. Inthis short space of time the ladies washrooms, whichwere appalling, were totally renovated. The lower lobby got a face lift plus new flooring, the dining room andupper ward room also got spiffed up. The caterers havehad some issues addressed re:equipment, also repairs tothe bar area are on-going these of which are long overdue.

In the near future the rear deck will be re-built,weather permitting.

In closing, I would like to thank the following people: Munden & Dianne, Dave & Janice, Eric & Ellen, Lloyd& Suzie, Dennis & Rosalind, Vic & Karen, Vince &Dianne, Grant & Penny, Andy & Paul (who are not acouple), Jack, and last but not least, Dee. The A.Y.C Reno Team Thanks everyone for a great effort.House ChairmanTerry Hill

Need a date? I have one for you,March 28 at 2pm. That is when we shouldall get together for the first Skippers Meetingof the year. We would like to review the sail-ing instructions and calendar at that timeand Roy is working on having a specialpresentation. It should be interesting andfun. Come for Sunday brunch then themeeting, a perfect afternoon.

We are still looking for someone torun the race house this season. If you areinterested or know someone who may beinterested, send them our way. We wouldlove a volunteer and would equally love topay someone to do the job. Mostly, wewould love to have the job filled and by acapable party.

We also need sponsors. We want to awardmore prizes this year. Make the seasonmore fun and rewarding. If you are interest-ed in donating anything and I mean any-thing, we will gladly give it away. Thisincludes donating your time to approachlikely donors. Give us a call.

Winter is almost gone and dreams of sailingour yachts is soon a reality. Try not to missthe meeting and try to send us some feed-back on our ideas. You will soon be stuckwith the decisions if you don't.

DAWN

Dawn-and a cloudless skyWith a brisk breeze blowing; And the seabirds, flightIn the morning light,As the waves go racing byWith their white crests showing.

Dawn of a new-born day,With the chill of night dyingAs the shadows fleeTo windward and lee,And the sharp prow cleaves the spray,At the forefoot flying

Dawn o,er the ocean dimWith the big Sails shaking; And the long white wakeWhere the foam flecks break,And Nature singing a hymnTo the glad day waking

Dawn of a radiant dayBright with the hope of homing,As each sailor boyWith a heart of joy,Singing his glad roundelay,Returns from his roaming

Looking Astern

It was 1963, a group of excitedlads wearing Royal CanadianSea Cadet uniforms stepped offthe bus and were instantlymade welcome by caring andattentive hosts of the AnnualSea Cadet regatta. I was hav-ing a great time, meeting newfriends, on the first day andtrying to outsail them on thesecond day. It was the firsttime that I had ever sailed inthe Northwest Arm and I couldnot believe that I was so luckyto be one of the 100 or soteenagers, selected to repre-sent their Corps. I was from theRoyal Canadian Sea Cadet CorpLion which was on shores of thebay at Hamilton, Ontario. I wassailing the famous 470 thenand that was a lot of fun. Theregatta was wonderful, the peo-ple were wonderful and Ithought someday I will sail thisarea again and here I am..Iwant to thank all those thattook the time to give us“Cadets” the time of our lives.Thanks. My memory, but I feltthat it was worth sharing.
