FRIENDS FOR ALL

A Simon Mole production

for 5-11s

When being that little bit different can be a good thing after all…

8 year old Lexi doesn’t make friends as easily as some. If only her school would allow a non-school

uniform day then she could be herself and find others like her. Inspired by Grandad’s hippy stories from

the swinging 60s, she decides to fight the powers that be, namely her class teacher, Mr Marsh, and the

class bully, Suzy.

Friends For All is an interactive spoken word performance for families, with rapping, dancing and

far-out video projections. It is a story about having the confidence to be yourself and stand up for what

you believe in. Poet and rapper Simon Mole performs in this humorous and moving piece, co-created

with theatre maker Peader Kirk.

Commissioned by the V&A as part of the Family Art Fun Programme and inspired by their You Say You

Want a Revolution exhibition (2016/17). Developed with support from Apples and Snakes, the Albany,

University of Bedfordshire and Birkbeck Centre for Contemporary Theatre.

LEAF

A Tam Tam Theatre production for 0-3 years

ONGOING

It grows and glows in the sunshine and the rain

Then the wind blows and it becomes colder

The leaf changes colour

In the snow, the leaf falls...

But when spring comes, a new leaf grows...

Join us as we tell the life story of a very special leaf in this warm, intimate and playful new piece for

under 3s inspired by nature and the seasons. Framed within an evocative soundscape, this is the

perfect introduction to theatre for the very young.

Leaf is another heart-warming play created by Tam Tam Theatre, whose previous shows for very young

children include Circles in the Sand and Curious. The company’s founder, Marleen Vermeulen, created

Leaf in collaboration with director Joy Haynes.

At the end of the performance, children are invited onto the stage to play among the leaves and

explore a landscape created by the changing seasons.

BOYS DON’T

A Papertale production in association with Apples and Snakes (South East) For 8-12s and adult audiences

Who picks up the pieces when boys hide their feelings? From the playground to the classroom, from home to the uncharted waters of online, boys learn that displaying their feelings is a no-no. But what happens to emotion that can’t be let out? Boys Don’t explores through spoken word what happens when boys show their feelings, written from real-life experiences of the diverse male cast. Through a series of funny, familiar and sometimes heart-breaking stories of boys in the emotional spotlight, the show delivers insights into male experiences of growing up, and offers the possibility of more open communication for us all. In partnership with Half Moon Theatre, and Apples and Snakes (South East), Boys Don’t features some of the UK’s leading poets and performers, in repertory, including Justin Coe, Hadiru Mahdi, Tanaka Mhishi & Steve Tasane. It is the latest work from Papertale, following on from the Suitcase Trilogy of spoken word performances about migration for young audiences, directed by Rosemary Harris. #BoysDont

Genderfluid, trans, asexual, cisgender, nonbinary - what do these terms mean? What does it mean to be 'male'? Or 'female'? And what if these labels just don't fit who you are? Welcome to the Normalisation Centre - a world where personal identity is scrutinised by an invisible authority figure and being processed sometimes involves a difficult choice. Analysing mythology and folklore, the system presents different global and historical perspectives on gender identity - but the instruction always remains the same: you must pick one. An evocative soundscape and physicality combine in People Are People, which weaves new writing and the real voices and stories of young people, into a powerful exploration of gender identity. The performance is immediately followed by a talkback/Q & A session, giving audiences an opportunity to discuss the creative process and the themes raised in the production. People Are People was developed in consultation with specialist gender equality and diversity charities The Great Initiative and Metro: Embracing Difference.

THREE

A Wrongsemble production for 3-8s

Three wishes, three witches, three sisters, three pigs, three bears, three musketeers...

Three singing actors weave together famous tales, which all feature the elusive number three! Brought to life with a flurry of original sing-a-long songs, live music and brilliantly inventive storytelling, the flamboyant players burst from their wagon of forgotten fables to re-tell the stories of Rumpelstiltskin, Goldilocks and Grimms’ Three Wanderers as never before.

Jump on board the ingenious and cleverly crafted wagon of fairytales in this spellbinding new musical play for children aged 3-8 and their families.

Three was specifically created in a pop-up style that makes it suitable for festivals and outdoor spaces as well as more traditional venues.

The show was first developed at the West Yorkshire Playhouse, followed by a tour of community settings in North Kirklees in partnership with Creative Scene and a short run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and Deer Shed Festival in 2016.

BIG WOW SMALL WONDER

A Justin Coe production for 4-9

Justin is the smallest boy in the whole town. So small that he can swim with goldfish. So small his sister takes him to school in her lunchbox. So small the class bully, Bother Boots Bradley, wants to catch him and keep him as his new pet. Justin just wants to be like his giant Dad, but when he finds out his Dad is not the Big Wow, he sets off on a journey to find who - or what - the Big Wow really is! Can the Big Wow help Justin to be tall in time, before Bradley puts him in a cage ready for the school show and tell in assembly? With the help of a pigeon, the mountain and the World Ant Weightlifting Champion, Justin soon realises that being big might not be all its bigged up to be. Told with huge helpings of humour, poignant poetry and original music, this is a tall story about the wonders of being small. #BigWowSmallWonder

THE GIRL AND THE GIRAFFE

A Floods of Ink production for 3-8s

One day whilst Girl is playing in her garden, she spots something peculiar on the other

side of the fence. Climbing up as high as she can to get a better view, she is surprised

when she comes face to face with... Giraffe!

As their friendship grows, Girl discovers that Giraffe isn't very well. She tries everything she can to make

him feel a bit better; putting on bandages, making a cup of tea, and even baking a truly magnificent

cake, but she doesn't get it quite right. Girl soon realises that Giraffe doesn't need a plaster for a graze

on his arm or a scratch on his knee. Giraffe is sad. Sometimes we need a different kind of plaster for the

things you can't always see.

Charming puppetry, an enchanting soundscape and beautiful storytelling combine in this sensitive show

about wellbeing and friendship, told from a child's perspective.

On the way out of the theatre they all rushed to say goodbye as they happily clambered out of the magical space created for them.” (Live Theatre UK, April 2016) "It is so very important to ensure that children’s earliest experiences of live theatre are positive. The Girl And The Giraffe certainly succeeds in that regard, and Mums and Dads will be charmed too." (Stage Talk Magazine) Audience Feedback "I just wanted to say how brilliant The Girl and the Giraffe was today. I struggle to explain to my kids why mummy is down and cries sometimes and this was just spot on. I really identified with some of the emotions that the giraffe felt, especially when he starts to feel better and comes out to play but is still a bit unsure. I’ve got something to use to explain bad days to my son now; I can say that I feel sad like giraffe. I think a lot of adults would have learnt from the play as well. Thank you for putting it on." (Audience Member, Tobacco Factory Theatre) “When I broke my leg, people wanted to help me, but when I had depression no one cared because they couldn't see it, your show has a really important message behind it.’ (Audience Member, Quarterhouse Theatre) Interview Floods of Ink spoke to Therapy: Need to Know about The Girl and the Giraffe.
