EDITOR'S NOTE.

Hi readers!

I’m happy to report that things here at Hills are as busy as ever! We were thrilled to have around 500 entries to both shows at our double Breed Show on Saturday 29th September. Congratulations to all the entrants and winners, you should be very proud of your well -bred and handled dogs at the show.

We loved seeing so many members at our introductory talk on the upcoming ANKC Trick Competitions - how exciting! - as well as our dog breeds lecture as part of our current Instructors’ Course.

We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming Be Dog Wise - Kids & Dogs Night on Monday 14th October at 6:30pm, where instructors Natalie Conway and Ivanka Fleming will run an interactive workshop for kids of all ages on safe interaction with dogs and how to play responsibly with their furry best friend. Details on page 16.

In preparation for summer, we have also invited Dr Marjorie Au of Petstock Vet Dural to present a talk on Ticks and Heat Stress after training on Monday 21 October at 8pm.

Dr Marjorie will be discussing how to make sure your dog stays cool in the hot weather as well as the threat of ticks and how to prevent and combat the little suckers! Details page 11.

This month we have included a handy health checklist for you to pop on your fridge, wall or dog toy box to remind you of all the little things to check on your four -legged friend regularly to ensure they are in good health. Thanks to instructor Narelle Brown for putting this together and to Dr Marjorie Au for always fact -checking to make sure we offer only safe and sound health advice to our members. Go grab yours on page 5 -6!

Happy training!

ALL ABOUT BREEDS - TALK BY PAULINE HARTWELLby Tony VinkLast month - 25 Sept. - saw the trainee instructors and a few members learn about and acquire a finer appreciation for Dog Breeds. Pauline Hartwell proffered a well developed talk on many aspects of dog breeds.

It's not just about the different groups and classification of dogs, but its history, science and technology. The role of breeders and the Kennel Clubs around the world. To spend a little time digging into the complexities of pure breds and how they are maintained is very interesting.

Many questions asked and answered, points discussed, arguments made. Who knew it could be so stimulating?

At Hills, from puppy class onward we promote regular handling of your dog in a positive way to build confidence and trust but also to ensure you identify health problems early.

A regular routine is the only way to ensure you are aware of changes in your dog so we have included a daily checklist that you can cut out and laminate and put on your wall or fridge! Once laminated there is a spot for dates and shopping list too that you can write on with a whiteboard marker!

🐾 Table at your height to make things easy for you 🐾 Cloths – washers / towel 🐾 Warm water or Saline / Eye Cleaner / Shampoo if

needed 🐾 Brush / Comb 🐾 Dog toothbrush and dog toothpaste (never use human

toothpaste! 🐾 Nail clippers or file 🐾 Treats – after all it has to be fun! You can reward as

DAILY CHECKLIST

Eyes Clear and Shiny Wipe away any dirt with warm water or eye cleaning product to help remove build up without tearing away hair

Ears Pink to white inside Check Colour and Smell

Clean ear that you can physically see with warm damp cloth and dry – see vet for infection (don’t put anything down the ear canal)

Teeth Check mouth and teeth for tartar, smell breath. Clean with dog toothbrush (or stocking material over finger, to begin) and dog toothpaste Get dog used to having mouth checked

Build up of tartar can cause a host of internal issues that we can’t see. Brushing must be done DAILY to be effective. If tartar not managed, see your vet! Effective brushing involves brushing the teeth at 45 degrees to the tooth surface and including gum margins. Make sure you brush all the way to the back of the mouth and the lower jaw. Use dog toothpaste - it's flavoured and makes the brushing experience more rewarding for your dog! If teeth OK, still do the clean to get dog used to being handled.

Coat Brush out knots – gently – using appropriate brush or comb for your dog’s coat type

Wash – 6-12 weeks depending on need Weekly washing can take the natural oils away

Body Check for lumps/bumps and give a massage

Get to know how your dog feels- praise!

Paws Pads / Nails

Check in between toes, paw pads and nails – be gentle! Are nails ripped / broken or split

Burrs, sticks and gum can cause pain when walking. If you can’t clip - See Vet

Tail / Rear End

Lift tail and check rear end for cleanliness

Wash with warm soapy water if required and dry

HILLS DOG CLUB K9 COMPANION AWARDby Ellen MokFirst published Hills Howler December 2018

As both a recently accredited assessor and recipient of the K9 Companion Award with my dog, I’m clearly the least objective person who could be writing this report! But hear me out - - I might be biased, but I want to share why I care so much about this award.

Our Hills motto is ‘Companions and Competitors’. When I teach beginners classes, I see new members look across the grounds. First, their eyes widen in awe at the precision and focus of the teams in our advanced classes (“How does she keep the dog looking at her like that?”). When I explain that they are preparing for obedience competition, and the rewards that come with achieving passes and titles in those sports, they smile. Then, they shake their heads and say that they’ll be satisfied when Fido stops jumping on the kids. In other words, they ‘just want a well -behaved pet’. And hey, don’t we all. But what does that actually mean?

The way I see it, the K9 Companion Award sets out for us what a well -behaved pet should be. The award is open to those who are in Beginners 8 or above, but it’s a separate achievement from Beginners graduation. A K9 Companion is,

simply put, a well -mannered pet who is an asset to your family and our community. The certification comes in two parts: a written and a practical test. The written test is short and has only a few questions covering pet ownership - - along the lines of: What registration and identification is necessary for your dog? What can you vaccinate your dog against? Where can your dog legally be off -leash? It’s basic, but it’s also a gentle reminder of the responsibilities of owning a pet in our society.

The practical test is longer and more thorough, but not at all technical. You don’t collect points on how straight your dog’s Sit is or how high they can jump - - but you need to show that your dog won’t run out onto the road or jump onto strangers and can take directions from you. They need to be clean and brushed and yes, you need to be carrying a plastic bag to show you’re always prepared!

So if your dog is polite, clean and under your control at all times, I want us to test it for you. Because if your dog is an asset to you and your community, a companion as well as a competitor, who wouldn’t want to celebrate that?

The next K9 Companion tests are coming up on

11 & 12 November.

In Puppy class we encourage you to do a 2 -3 -minute check of your dog - the eyes, ears, mouth, body – so that you can get used to what is normal and be alerted to any changes. This check also helps the dog to become used to being handled, and when done in a positive way builds trust and confidence. Have you done your 3 -minute check today?

A SALIVARY MUCOCELE by Narelle Brown Puppy Class Instructor

A friend recently let me know about a condition that I had not heard of before so I thought I would do some research and share it here for you.Canines have salivary glands under their tongues and in the back of their mouths.  Salivary glands produce saliva, which then goes through a salivary duct to the mouth, where it helps with the digestion process.

If a gland or duct gets damaged, saliva leaks into surrounding tissue and collects and may cause a Salivary Mucoceles which is typically a soft and non -painful lump or swelling, unless a secondary bacterial infection is present.

Some of the most common signs of oral and salivary mucoceles are:

⁌Facial swelling ⁌Oral pain and swelling ⁌Blood in the saliva ⁌Difficulty swallowing ⁌Eye pressure and pain ⁌Respiratory disease or difficulties

breathing ⁌Soft, developing masses in the neck

(cervical)

The Mucocele is often noted as a movable and compressible, painless swelling of the neck or within the oral cavity. Can occur in the upper neck, under the jaw or between the jaws. It can occur on the floor of the mouth or alongside the tongue and in the throat.

The cause of salivary mucoceles is rarely identified, although trauma such as from choke collars, bite wounds, or chewing on foreign materials, ear canal

surgery is generally considered to be the most likely initiating event. Treatment is by draining which may only be a temporary solution or surgery.

This condition is almost exclusively seen in dogs and very rarely in cats. All breeds are susceptible but there seems to be an increased incidence in Poodles, German Shepherds, Dachshunds, and Australian Silky Terriers. There is no age predisposition and this condition may occur at any time. Awful pictures – but at least you know what is not normal and see your veterinarian!

The Secretary Hills Dog Club Inc. PO Box 392 Round Corner 2158 [email protected] 27 September 2019 1. NOTICE OF MOTION I move that the qualifying criteria for awards for Rally O be changed to bring them in line with the current qualifying criteria for Obedience: NOVICE: Your best 3 results only will be accepted. ADVANCED: Your best 5 results only will be accepted. EXCELLENT: Your best 5 results only will be accepted. MASTER: Your best 5 results only will be accepted. Medals will be awarded to all qualifiers in four different levels of Rally O competition: Novice, Advanced, Excellent, and Masters. Moved: Genevieve Young Seconded: Dianne Atkins Rationale: As with Obedience, Rally O awards are competitive within the Club, and are based on points gained in competition at different levels of Rally O, i.e., Novice, Advanced, Excellent, and Masters. The qualifying criteria for Rally O awards should therefore be the same as for Obedience. The adoption of the new criteria will recognise and award achievements at the different competition levels of Rally O. 2. NOTICE OF MOTION I move that the qualifying criteria for awards for Obedience levels CCD, CD (Novice), CDX (Open), UD, and UDX, be changed to the following: CCD Your best THREE results only will be accepted.

234 to 249 points Receive a bronze medal 250 to 284 points Receive a silver medal 285 to 300 points Receive a gold medal

410 to 439 points Receive a bronze medal 440 to 454 points Receive a silver medal 455 to 500 points Receive a gold medal

410 to 439 points Receive a bronze medal 440 to 474 points Receive a silver medal 475 to 500 points Receive a gold medal

CD (NOVICE) Your best THREE results only will be accepted.

OPEN (CDX) Your best FIVE results only will be accepted.

UD Your best FIVE results only will be accepted. UDX Your best FIVE results only will be accepted. Moved: Genevieve Young Seconded: Dianne Atkins Rationale: The new qualifying card system and point score changes make it a fairer competition, and bring all cards and scoring criteria to the same level. 3. NOTICE OF MOTION I move that the winner of the Iris Bollinger Memorial Trophy be determined by the following criteria: The person gaining the highest point score out of 5 qualifying cards at their highest level will win. If there is a draw, then the individual competitors’ scores will be counted and averaged and the person with the highest average score will win. Moved: Genevieve Young Seconded: Dianne Atkins Rationale: Under the current criteria, no consideration is given to the difficulty of different Rally O levels, and the person with the highest overall point score wins. The proposed change will resolve this issue. 4. NOTICE OF MOTION I move that the criteria for the Dianne Atkins Perpetual Trophy for Highest Achievement in Canine Competition be amended to allow only Titles recognised by the ANKC. Moved: Genevieve Young Seconded: Dianne Atkins Rationale: This removes all ambiguity as to which dog sports should be recognised and awarded medals and/or trophies.
