Chaplain

So often we hear in chapel, church, or even read in the Bible how important it is to let go of the things of the world and give everything we have to God. We are told to “consider all things rubbish for the surpassing value of knowing Jesus Christ,” and to “sell all we have and follow Jesus. We are told multiple times a year from the pulpit that we need to hold God as the most important thing in our life. God needs to be kept more important than girl and boyfriends, money, jobs, video games and anything else that we hold higher than God.

This is why God should be at the top of our list: because He is the only thing that will last. There will be a day when your money will be gone. A day when your girl/boyfriend is gone. Your health. Your money. Your friends. San Diego Christian College. Your car. Your intelligence. The world around you. To hold these things above your God on your list of importance is foolish because he has not promised you those things. However, He has promised you something better: a God that will always remain and will never be taken from you. He is the only thing worth pursuing because He is the only thing that will always be there for you. The nearness of our God is our good.

Jake Wilhelm

“You, Lord, in the beginning laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the works of your hands; they will perish, but You remain; and they all will become old like a gar-ment, and like a mantle you will roll them up; like a garment they will also be changed, but You are the same, and Your years will not come to an end.”

NSO catching the wave By Grace Crawford

Incoming fall 2011 freshmen and transfers were invited to “Catch the Wave” this NSO and join us in the overarching 2011-2012 theme—The Voyage. Excited new students and apprehensive parents lined up outside the enrollment offices, scurried about the LCC or tapped their feet to some live music at the community fair. The big day had arrived. Inside, returning students and staff, all wearing hot pink t-shirts, greeted newcomers and their families. They offered refreshments or simply chit-chat-ted, welcoming everyone to SDCC. All the way from the parking lot, through the community fair, and up to the dorms, the “pinkshirts,” as the staff were soon dubbed, guided students to their next step, making the entrance process smooth both for the newcomers as well as the coordinatorsof NSO.

From the very beginning, there was a mood among the staff, a general up-beat attitude, reflected in the way they enthusiastically greeted families who drove in through the front gate, or later in the way they went up to a table and started talking with a new student. When a few members of the staff were later asked,“What about NSO displayed the character of SDCC?” they all agreed—community.

2011-12 Although games and activities played a big part in establishing that sense of community and belonging, other events also worked toward that end. Some of the most memorable included the impromptu prayer time at Shadow Mountain when guest speaker Ed Hindson asked all the new SDCC students to come forward. An equal number of members of the congregation stepped up to pray for them. Com-plete strangers paired up as students, who had only just said goodbye to their parents, met other believers who wanted to speak words of blessing and encouragement over them. Other great moments were shared at the beach around the campfire when returning and new students passed a guitar back and forth, leading us in a time of contemplative worship to the Creator of the very ocean behind us.

I asked SDCC graduate of 2011 and current intern in the Student Life office Court-ney Barlow about the purpose behind the NSO theme “Catch the Wave.” She ex-plained that it was meant to draw in the new students to the overarching concept of The Voyage, to bring them on this journey with us as a community. “We want them to catch the same wave that we’re going on.” For those of us who were at the edge of the water only a few short weeks ago, incoming and returning students alike, NSO accomplished what it set out to. We caught the wave. Now, the Voyage is underway.

Shawna, Mark, Jovana, and Mary win second place for their creative

and hilarious lipsync

Jared and friends collabrative piece

Magic’s interpertive dance of Enya’s “Only Time”

LipSync This year at SDCC’s annual Lip Sync, stu-dents gathered to celebrate the music of the 90’s – songs that we grew up with and that bring back memories of old times. The special night was host-ed by the beloved Phoebe Buffay (Shawna Spiva) and Chandler Bing (Ryan Heinze) of Friends that we all know and love. Seven talented groups per-formed and brought us a variety of tunes from our youth – groups like TLC, Destiny’s Child, *NSYNC, even Aqua’s “Barbie Girl” made an appearance. Secret judges selected the winners, and three top performances were chosen for their execution, creativity, and entertainment value. Third place was awarded to Magic for their ridiculous, hilarious, yet somehow inspiring and well-executed perfor-mance to Enya’s “Only Time.” Awkward Transitions received second place for their creative routine that included several 90’s tunes and incredibly en-tertaining choreography. The coveted first place prize went to Jared & Friends for their wildly enter-taining and creative use of songs to tell a story. Lip Sync was an enjoyable night of reminisc-ing, laughter, and a nice break from the typical flow of the school week. Thank you to perform-ers, hosts, judges and guests – I hope you continue to join us at Lip Sync in the future. The funky tradi-tion continues and will for many years to come!

Senate Executives

My name is Alex Harmening. I absolutely love swimming in the ocean, running down hills, playing music, cooking with the intention of eating, and laughing. This is my sec-ond year at SDCC, and I am really excited to see God glorified in the seeming busyness of this semester. And in case you were wondering, or in case you weren’t re-ally wondering at all, when I’m not doing homework or hanginga out with fabulous SDCCians, I work in the li-brary and the writing lab as well as on Student Senate.

My name is Jacki Lowery. I grew up here in San Diego and I absolutely love it!!! This is my second year at SDCC, I am a senior majoring in Kinesiology with a con-centration in sports medicine. I am currently a Student Athletic Trainer here in the SDCC Athletic Training Room. One of my favorite things is running, and I am on the cross country team. Other things that I enjoy are hiking, work-ing out, scrap booking and spending time with my friends and family. This is my second year serving the student body as a part of Senate and it has been an amazing opportu-nity. I have no idea what the future holds for me right now but it is in God’s hands and that’s all that really matters!

Hey SDCC. My name is Katelyn Neverkovec. I am a se-nior majoring in Kinesiology and I am on the cross country team. I am from Nor Cal and a huge SF Giants fan! I enjoy spending the day at the ballpark, hiking, playing soccer, and hanging out with family and friends. Psalm 73:26

Athletic Liason“Hey Hawks fans! This is your Athletic Liaison for this semes-ter, Daniel Araujo. I’m a junior English major this year and also an RA for Lower Center. I love reading a good book, writing a short poem and paintballing with the guys. It’s always a good time. Back home, I’m the oldest of seven kids (yes, 7) and I live in The Bay. I played soccer all my life up until last year and I definitely miss it. For sports teams, I rep all The Bay teams so go Giants’/Niners/Warriors! Also, you’ll see me getting loud in my Rally Tubby suit at the basketball games. Well, I hope to see you at the games!”

My name is Jon Arena. So I’m just a normal cat try-ing to make his way through the world, all the while try-ing to have as much fun as I can. I’m a very extrovert-ed person as well as a strong optimist which combine to make me, let’s say, interesting. I love sports in general and have been an athlete in most any sport, but I am a wrestler to my core. Strike up a convo with me about it and I’ll tell you why I think its God’s favorite sport!

My name is Sandra Knapp and I am a junior Psychology major hailing from Highlands Ranch, CO. My current plans are to attend graduate school to become a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist - I want to use my education to help young women develop a healthy self- and body-image. I love dancing, Christmas, and anything corny. Hebrews 10:35-36

So when the editor of H magazine approached me and asked me to write a mini biography about myself, I was like “sweet.” Then I asked how long they wanted it to be and they were like “four sentences,” and I thought shoot dang, what am I going to write? I mean, I’m about to waste three sentences just trying to describe my situation, and that’s going to leave me with just one actual sentence of bio. My name is John, and I like to party (in a Biblical manner).

Hello, my name is Ethan Van Hofwegen. I was born and raised in Tolleson, AZ. I am a junior at SDCC and a busi-ness major. I enjoy working outside and driving tractors.

My name is Naomi Klockmann and I have a hard time picking a major because what major does a fu-ture ruler of Narnia need? And trying to explain that to a school councilor just doesn’t go over as well as one might expect, even at a Christian school! See my dilem-ma? Maybe I should ask Mrs. Haynes what she thinks. . .

My eyes opened, and my first thought was, “My alarm clock didn’t go off!” My second thought was, “Worship is already over in chapel. I guess I’ll have to wait until next Wednesday to worship.” The truth, though, is that those words should hold no place in a Christian’s mind or con-versation. While we can and should worship through music, considering it to be the only way shows that we have entirely

missed the big picture. Because the music is only a vehicle that helps lead us to the Throne of God and not the worship itself, it is possible to stand in chapel and sing a song perfectly without worshipping at all. Worship is about our heart attitude before the Lord. Just as research has shown that our 93% of our communication is nonverbal (our body language, our tone, our attitude, etc.), the biggest part of our worship is not the externals – the words, the tune, the actions– but rather the nonverbal posture of our heart. While our actions do matter, they are meaningless if they do not reflect our hearts. So the next time you step into chapel, don’t just assume that if you sing the words and lift your hands you are truly worshipping. Challenge yourself to no longer be satisfied with mediocrity of a solely external worship, but rather discover the joy of fulfilling our created purpose – to worship both inside and out.

SALT may not be a huge ministry that transforms the nations into God-fearing, church-building societies, but it does reach out in a very practical way to those much less fortunate than ourselves. By “reach out” I mean consciously and lovingly using effort to impact someone’s spirit, just as Christ, God very God, reached down to us in confidence to save our souls. The biggest desire of those who are homeless is beyond bread and water... it is to be listened to. To sit with someone, anyone, and speak of social, emotional, mental, and spiritual tides will bless them in ways most of us can’t grasp. We take for granted people tak-ing the time to listen to us and genuinely be in-terested in our lives. They don’t have this. Let us fulfill our duty of being the image of Christ to the destitute men and women of downtown San Diego.

The Forge Men’s Ministry meets every Wednesday night at 6:45 in the Administration Building, Room A. So far God has really moved in the lives of the men that have come together with the common goal to grow spiritually as individuals and as a cohesive unit. Currently we are looking into the character of Jesus Christ, including His attributes, His example and what it means to follow Him in character. It has been wonderful to witness and take part in growth in God, as well as in fellow-ship with our fellow brothers in Christ. The openness, honesty and freedom that we all share in Christ is profound, and all men are more than welcome to join us for a deeper look into God’s Word and prolific growth within the Body of Christ.

Hey guys, if you don’t know me my name is Jon Arena and I’m the Intramurals director this year. Basically its my job to do the behind the scenes stuff so all of you get to head up to the gym a couple nights a week and have a bunch of fun getting competitive with your fellow Hawks. I’m super stoked for this year because all in all, there are 240 participants in this semester’s sports. Although there is quite a bit of crossover between the sports, this still means well over a quarter of the school is coming out to play each week. At the end of the semester there are gonna be playoffs and championships with prizes for both the champion teams as well as anybody that shows up to watch! If you aren’t signed up for this semester, don’t fret because next semester we start it all over with Frisbee and Basketball. The Frisbee teams will be all new and there will be both guys and girls Basketball. (Last year there wasn’t enough girls to play so if you want to play and are a female, find other like-minded females and make them sign up!) Also, if you don’t want to play Frisbee but you want to support your classmates, there is a competition starting up for the best Team Mom (guys can be team moms too), the winner of which is going to win a nice gift card to the place of their choice. Find a captain and ask if you can be their Mom! To wrap up, make sure all of you come out and support those that are playing every Tuesday and Thursday night, 9:30pm in the RAC and

don’t miss out on next semester’s sign-ups! Thanks, God bless and Go Hawks!

The Undergraduate program is primarily 18-22 year olds, while the APS programs are geared towards working adults and encompass SDCC’s evening classes, online pro-gram and Teacher Credential program.

The undergraduate student body has grown by 28% over the last four years and this growth is being pushed by the 49% increase in the incoming class size over that same time span. The APS program is also growing and has more than doubled over the last four years. The growth in these pro-grams has increased the total enrollment at SDCC by 55% since 2008.

The growth we are experiencing is confirmation that the educational environment and the community that exists is what many students are looking for in their col-lege search. As these trends continue SDCC is poised for growth and thankful for God’s provision as we continue to focus on impacting the world for Christ.
